Mixed powers of generating functions
Published in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science Proceedings, AG, 171-182, 2006 • View PublicationBIB
Given an integer m>=1, let || || be a norm in R^{m+1} and let S denote the set of points with nonnegative coordinates in the unit sphere with respect to this norm. Consider for each 1<= j<= m a function f_j(z) that is analytic in an open neighborhood of the point z=0 in the complex plane and with possibly negative Taylor coefficients. Given a vector n=(n_0,...,n_m) with nonnegative integer coefficients, we develop a method to systematically associate a parameter-varying integral to study the asymptotic behavior of the coefficient of z^{n_0} of the Taylor series of (f_1(z))^{n_1}...(f_m(z))^{n_m}, as ||n|| tends to infinity. The associated parameter-varying integral has a phase term with well specified properties that make the asymptotic analysis of the integral amenable to saddle-point methods: for many directions d in S, these methods ensure uniform asymptotic expansions for the Taylor coefficient of z^{n_0} of (f_1(z))^{n_1}...(f_m(z))^{n_m}, provided that n/||n|| stays sufficiently close to d as ||n|| blows up to infinity. Our method finds applications in studying the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of a certain multivariable generating functions as well as in problems related to the Lagrange inversion formula for instance in the context random planar maps.

The topological structure of scaling limits of large planar maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss scaling limits of large bipartite planar maps. If p is a fixed integer strictly greater than 1, we consider a random planar map M(n) which is uniformly distributed over the set of all 2p-angulations with n faces. Then, at least along a suitable subsequence, the metric space M(n) equipped with the graph distance rescaled by the factor n to the power -1/4 converges in distribution as n tends to infinity towards a limiting random compact metric space, in the sense of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance. We prove that the topology of the limiting space is uniquely determined independently of p, and that this space can be obtained as the quotient of the Continuum Random Tree for an equivalence relation which is defined from Brownian labels attached to the vertices. We also verify that the Hausdorff dimension of the limit is almost surely equal to 4.

On triangulations with high vertex degree
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 12, 1 (2008) 17-44 • View PublicationBIB
We solve three enumerative problems concerning families of planar maps. More precisely, we establish algebraic equations for the generating function of non-separable triangulations in which all vertices have degree at least d, for a certain value d chosen in {3, 4, 5}. The originality of the problem lies in the fact that degree restrictions are placed both on vertices and faces. Our proofs first follow Tutte's classical approach: we decompose maps by deleting the root and translate the decomposition into an equation satisfied by the generating function of the maps under consideration. Then we proceed to solve the equation obtained using a recent technique that extends the so-called quadratic method.

Bijective counting of tree-rooted maps and shuffles of parenthesis systems
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 14 (2007) R9 • View PublicationBIB
The number of tree-rooted maps, that is, rooted planar maps with a distinguished spanning tree, of size $n$ is C(n)C(n+1) where C(n)=binomial(2n,n)/(n+1) is the nth Catalan number. We present a (long awaited) simple bijection which explains this result. We prove that our bijection is isomorphic to a former recursive construction on shuffles of parenthesis systems due to Cori, Dulucq and Viennot.

Polynomial equations with one catalytic variable, algebraic series, and map enumeration
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series B 96 (2006) 623--672 • View PublicationBIB
Let $F(t,u)\equiv F(u)$ be a formal power series in $t$ with polynomial coefficients in $u$. Let $F\_1, ..., F\_k$ be $k$ formal power series in $t$, independent of $u$. Assume all these series are characterized by a polynomial equation $$ P(F(u), F\_1, ..., F\_k, t, u)=0. $$ We prove that, under a mild hypothesis on the form of this equation, these $(k+1)$ series are algebraic, and we give a strategy to compute a polynomial equation for each of them. This strategy generalizes the so-called kernel method, and quadratic method, which apply respectively to equations that are linear and quadratic in $F(u)$. Applications include the solution of numerous map enumeration problems, among which the hard-particle model on general planar maps.

Three Colorability of an Arrangement Graph of Great Circles
Stan Wagon asked the following in 2000. Is every zonohedron face 3-colorable when viewed as a planar map? An equivalent question, under a different guise, is the following: is the arrangement graph of great circles on the sphere always vertex 3-colorable? (The arrangement graph has a vertex for each intersection point, and an edge for each arc directly connecting two intersection points.) Assume that no three circles meet at a point, so that this arrangement graph is 4-regular. In this note we have shown that all arrangement graphs defined as above are 3-colorable.

Planar maps as labeled mobiles
Published in Elec. Jour. of Combinatorics Vol 11 (2004) R69 • View PublicationBIB
We extend Schaeffer's bijection between rooted quadrangulations and well-labeled trees to the general case of Eulerian planar maps with prescribed face valences, to obtain a bijection with a new class of labeled trees, which we call mobiles. Our bijection covers all the classes of maps previously enumerated by either the two-matrix model used by physicists or by the bijection with blossom trees used by combinatorists. Our bijection reduces the enumeration of maps to that, much simpler, of mobiles and moreover keeps track of the geodesic distance within the initial maps via the mobiles' labels. Generating functions for mobiles are shown to obey systems of algebraic recursion relations.

On the Asymptotic Number of Plane Curves and Alternating Knots
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a conjecture for the power-law exponent in the asymptotic number of types of plane curves as the number of self-intersections goes to infinity. In view of the description of prime alternating links as flype equivalence classes of plane curves, a similar conjecture is made for the asymptotic number of prime alternating knots. The rationale leading to these conjectures is given by quantum field theory. Plane curves are viewed as configurations of loops on a random planar lattices, that are in turn interpreted as a model of 2d quantum gravity with matter. The identification of the universality class of this model yields the conjecture. Since approximate counting or sampling planar curves with more than a few dozens of intersections is an open problem, direct confrontation with numerical data yields no convincing indication on the correctness of our conjectures. However, our physical approach yields a more general conjecture about connected systems of curves. We take advantage of this to design an original and feasible numerical test, based on recent perfect samplers for large planar maps. The numerical datas strongly support our identification with a conformal field theory recently described by Read and Saleur.

Geodesic Distance in Planar Graphs
Published in Nucl.Phys. B663 (2003) 535-567 • View PublicationBIB
We derive the exact generating function for planar maps (genus zero fatgraphs) with vertices of arbitrary even valence and with two marked points at a fixed geodesic distance. This is done in a purely combinatorial way based on a bijection with decorated trees, leading to a recursion relation on the geodesic distance. The latter is solved exactly in terms of discrete soliton-like expressions, suggesting an underlying integrable structure. We extract from this solution the fractal dimensions at the various (multi)-critical points, as well as the precise scaling forms of the continuum two-point functions and the probability distributions for the geodesic distance in (multi)-critical random surfaces. The two-point functions are shown to obey differential equations involving the residues of the KdV hierarchy.

The degree distribution in bipartite planar maps: applications to the Ising model
We characterize the generating function of bipartite planar maps counted according to the degree distribution of their black and white vertices. This result is applied to the solution of the hard particle and Ising models on random planar lattices. We thus recover and extend some results previously obtained by means of matrix integrals. Proofs are purely combinatorial and rely on the idea that planar maps are conjugacy classes of trees. In particular, these trees explain why the solutions of the Ising and hard particle models on maps of bounded degree are always algebraic.

Census of Planar Maps: From the One-Matrix Model Solution to a Combinatorial Proof
Published in Nucl.Phys. B645 (2002) 477-499 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of enumeration of planar maps and revisit its one-matrix model solution in the light of recent combinatorial techniques involving conjugated trees. We adapt and generalize these techniques so as to give an alternative and purely combinatorial solution to the problem of counting arbitrary planar maps with prescribed vertex degrees.

Planar Maps in 4 bits/edge
Existing planar map encodings neglect maps with loops. The presented scheme encodes any connected planar map in 4 bits/edge. Encoding and decoding time is O(edges). Implicit face/edge/vertex orderings and canonical encodings are discussed.

Dichromatic polynomials and Potts models summed over rooted maps
Published in Ann.Comb. 5 (2001) 17-36 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the sum of dichromatic polynomials over non-separable rooted planar maps, an interesting special case of which is the enumeration of such maps. We present some known results and derive new ones. The general problem is equivalent to the $q$-state Potts model randomized over such maps. Like the regular ferromagnetic lattice models, it has a first-order transition when $q$ is greater than a critical value $q_c$, but $q_c$ is much larger - about 72 instead of 4.
Enumeration of m-ary cacti
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 24 (2000), 22-56 • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is to enumerate various classes of cyclically colored m-gonal plane cacti, called m-ary cacti. This combinatorial problem is motivated by the topological classification of complex polynomials having at most m critical values, studied by Zvonkin and others. We obtain explicit formulae for both labelled and unlabelled m-ary cacti, according to i) the number of polygons, ii) the vertex-color distribution, iii) the vertex-degree distribution of each color. We also enumerate m-ary cacti according to the order of their automorphism group. Using a generalization of Otter's formula, we express the species of m-ary cacti in terms of rooted and of pointed cacti. A variant of the m-dimensional Lagrange inversion is then used to enumerate these structures. The method of Liskovets for the enumeration of unrooted planar maps can also be adapted to m-ary cacti.
