Let $p>3$ be a prime. We show that, for each integer $d$ with $p \leq d \leq 2(p-1)$, there exists a generalized almost perfect nonlinear (GAPN) binomial or trinomial over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ of algebraic degree $d$. We start by deriving sufficient conditions for the function $G \colon \mathbb{F}_{p^2} \rightarrow \mathbb{F}_{p^2}, X \mapsto X^{d_1} + u X^{d_2}$ to be GAPN in the case where one of the terms of $G$ is GAPN. We then give explicit constructions of GAPN binomials over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ of any odd algebraic degree between $p$ and $2(p-1)$ and, in the case where $p$ is not a Mersenne prime, also of any even algebraic degree in this range. To obtain GAPN functions of even algebraic degree also in the general case, we finally show how to construct GAPN trinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$ of any even algebraic degree between $p$ and $2(p-1)$ by applying a characterization of a special form of GAPN binomials by Özbudak and Sălăgean. Our constructed functions are the first GAPN functions of even algebraic degree over extension fields of odd characteristic reported so far.

Let $G$ be a graph with edge set $E(G)$. Denote by $d_w$ the degree of a vertex $w$ of $G$. The sigma index of $G$ is defined as $\sum_{uv\in E(G)}(d_u-d_v)^2$. A connected graph of order $n$ and size $n+k-1$ is known as a connected $k$-cyclic graph. Abdo, Dimitrov, and Gutman [Discrete Appl. Math. 250 (2018) 57-64] characterized the graphs having the greatest sigma index over the family of all connected graphs of a fixed order. The primary goal of the present note is to determine graphs possessing the greatest sigma index from the class of all connected $k$-cyclic graphs of a fixed order.

Frieze patterns are combinatorial objects that are deeply related to cluster theory. Determinants of frieze patterns arise from triangular regions of the frieze, and they have been considered in previous works by Broline-Crowe-Isaacs, and by Baur-Marsh. In this article, we introduce a new type of matrix for any infinite frieze pattern. This approach allows us to give a new proof of the frieze determinant result given by Baur-Marsh.
Bohr sets in sumsets II: countable abelian groups

We prove three results concerning the existence of Bohr sets in threefold sumsets. More precisely, letting $G$ be a countable discrete abelian group and $φ_1, φ_2, φ_3: G \to G$ be commuting endomorphisms whose images have finite indices, we show that
(1) If $A \subset G$ has positive upper Banach density and $φ_1 + φ_2 + φ_3 = 0$, then $φ_1(A) + φ_2(A) + φ_3(A)$ contains a Bohr set. This generalizes a theorem of Bergelson and Ruzsa in $\mathbb{Z}$ and a recent result of the first author.
(2) For any partition $G = \bigcup_{i=1}^r A_i$, there exists an $i \in \{1, \ldots, r\}$ such that $φ_1(A_i) + φ_2(A_i) - φ_2(A_i)$ contains a Bohr set. This generalizes a result of the second and third authors from $\mathbb{Z}$ to countable abelian groups.
(3) If $B, C \subset G$ have positive upper Banach density and $G = \bigcup_{i=1}^r A_i$ is a partition, $B + C + A_i$ contains a Bohr set for some $i \in \{1, \ldots, r\}$. This is a strengthening of a theorem of Bergelson, Furstenberg, and Weiss.
These results are quantitative in the sense that the radius and rank of the Bohr set obtained depends only on the indices $[G:φ_j(G)]$, the upper Banach density of $A$ (in (1)), or the number of sets in the given partition (in (2) and (3)).

Let $G$ be a graph of size $m$ and $ρ(G)$ be the spectral radius of its adjacency matrix. A graph is said to be $F$-free if it does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $F$. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a $K_{2,r+1}$-free non-star graph with $m\geq (4r+2)^2+1$, then $ρ(G)\leq ρ(S_m^1)$, with equality if and only if $G\cong S_m^1$. Recently, Li, Sun and Wei showed that for any $θ_{1,2,3}$-free graph of size $m\geq 8$, $ρ(G)\leq \frac{1+\sqrt{4m-3}}{2}$, with equality if and only if $G\cong S_{\frac{m+3}{2},2}$. However, this bound is not attainable when $m$ is even. We proved that if $G$ is $θ_{1,2,3}$-free and $G\ncong S_{\frac{m+3}{2},2}$ with $m\geq 22$, then $ρ(G)\leq ρ(F_{m,1})$ if $m$ is even, with equality if and only if $G\cong F_{m,1}$, and $ρ(G)\leq ρ(F_{m,2})$ if $m$ is odd, with equality if and only if $G\cong F_{m,2}$.

Let $H$ be an $h$-vertex graph. The vertex arboricity $ar(H)$ of $H$ is the least integer $r$ such that $V(H)$ can be partitioned into $r$ parts and each part induces a forest in $H$. We show that for sufficiently large $n\in h\mathbb{N}$, every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq \max\left\{\left(1-\frac{2}{f(H)}+o(1)\right)n, \left(\frac{1}{2}+o(1)\right)n\right\}$ and $α(G)=o(n)$ contains an $H$-factor, where $f(H)=2ar(H)$ or $2ar(H)-1$. The result can be viewed an analogue of the Alon--Yuster theorem \cite{MR1376050} in Ramsey--Turán theory, which generalises the results of Balogh--Molla--Sharifzadeh~\cite{MR3570984} and Knierm--Su~\cite{MR4193066} on clique factors. In particular the degree conditions are asymptotically sharp for infinitely many graphs $H$ which are not cliques.

A graph $G$ of order $n$ is said to be $k$-factor-critical for integers $1\leq k < n$, if the removal of any $k$ vertices results in a graph with a perfect matching. $1$- and $2$-factor-critical graphs are the well-known factor-critical and bicritical graphs, respectively. A $k$-factor-critical graph $G$ is called minimal if for any edge $e\in E(G)$, $G-e$ is not $k$-factor-critical. In 1998, O. Favaron and M. Shi conjectured that every minimally $k$-factor-critical graph of order $n$ has the minimum degree $k+1$ and confirmed it for $k=1, n-2, n-4$ and $n-6$. In this paper, we use a simple method to reprove the above result. As a main result, the further use of this method enables ones to prove the conjecture to be true for $k=n-8$. We also obtain that every minimally $(n-6)$-factor-critical graph of order $n$ has at most $n-Δ(G)$ vertices with the maximum degree $Δ(G)$ for $n-4\leq Δ(G)\leq n-1$.

A note on the locally irregular edge colorings of cacti
A graph is locally irregular if the degrees of the end-vertices of every edge are distinct. An edge coloring of a graph G is locally irregular if every color induces a locally irregular subgraph of G. A colorable graph G is any graph which admits a locally irregular edge coloring. The locally irregular chromatic index X'irr(G) of a colorable graph G is the smallest number of colors required by a locally irregular edge coloring of G. The Local Irregularity Conjecture claims that all colorable graphs require at most 3 colors for a locally irregular edge coloring. Recently, it has been observed that the conjecture does not hold for the bow-tie graph B, since B is colorable and requires at least 4 colors for a locally irregular edge coloring. Since B is a cactus graph and all non-colorable graphs are also cacti, this seems to be a relevant class of graphs for the Local Irregularity Conjecture. In this paper we establish that X'irr(G)<= 4 for all colorable cactus graphs.
The spread of generalized reciprocal distance matrix
The generalized reciprocal distance matrix $RD_α(G)$ was defined as $RD_α(G)=αRT(G)+(1-α)RD(G),\quad 0\leq α\leq 1.$ Let $λ_{1}(RD_α(G))\geq λ_{2}(RD_α(G))\geq \cdots \geq λ_{n}(RD_α(G))$ be the eigenvalues of $RD_α$ matrix of graphs $G$. Then the $RD_α$-spread of graph $G$ can be defined as $S_{RD_α}(G)=λ_{1}(RD_α(G))-λ_{n}(RD_α(G))$. In this paper, we first obtain some sharp lower and upper bounds for the $RD_α$-spread of graphs. Then we determine the lower bounds for the $RD_α$-spread of bipartite graphs and graphs with given clique number. At last, we give the $RD_α$-spread of double star graphs. Our results generalize the related results of the reciprocal distance matrix and reciprocal distance signless Laplacian matrix.

Given integers $k,l\geq 2$, where either $l$ is odd or $k$ is even, let $n(k,l)$ denote the largest integer $n$ such that each element of $A_n$ is a product of $k$ many $l$-cycles. In 2008, M. Herzog, G. Kaplan and A. Lev proved that if $k,l$ both are odd, $3\mid l$ and $l>3$, then $n(k,l)=\frac{2}{3}kl$. They further conjectured that if $k$ is even and $3\mid l$, then $n(k,l)=\frac{2}{3}kl+1$. In this article, we prove this conjecture. We also prove that $n(k,3)=2k+1$ if $k$ is odd.
Sharp bounds on the symmetric division deg index of graphs and line graphs

For a graph $G$ with vertex set $V_{G}$ and edge set $E_{G}$, the symmetric division deg index is defined as $SDD(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E_{G}}(\frac{d_{u}}{d_{v}}+\frac{d_{v}}{d_{u}})$, where $d_{u}$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. In 2018, Furtula et al. confirmed the quality of SDD index exceeds that of some more popular VDB indices, in particular that of the GA index. They shown a close connection between the SDD index and the earlier well-established GA index. Thus it is meaningful and important to consider the chemical and mathematical properties of the SDD index. In this paper, we determine some sharp bounds on the symmetric division deg index of graphs and line graphs and characterize the corresponding extremal graphs.
Thresholds for the monochromatic clique transversal game
We study a recently introduced two-person combinatorial game, the $(a,b)$-monochromatic clique transversal game which is played by Alice and Bob on a graph $G$. As we observe, this game is equivalent to the $(b,a)$-biased Maker-Breaker game played on the clique-hypergraph of $G$. Our main results concern the threshold bias $a_1(G)$ that is the smallest integer $a$ such that Alice can win in the $(a,1)$-monochromatic clique transversal game on $G$ if she is the first to play. Among other results, we determine the possible values of $a_1(G)$ for the disjoint union of graphs, prove a formula for $a_1(G)$ if $G$ is triangle-free, and obtain the exact values of $a_1(C_n \,\square\, C_m)$, $a_1(C_n \,\square\, P_m)$, and $a_1(P_n \,\square\, P_m)$ for all possible pairs $(n,m)$.
Learning the Quality of Machine Permutations in Job Shop Scheduling

In recent years, the power demonstrated by Machine Learning (ML) has increasingly attracted the interest of the optimization community that is starting to leverage ML for enhancing and automating the design of algorithms. One combinatorial optimization problem recently tackled with ML is the Job Shop scheduling Problem (JSP). Most of the works on the JSP using ML focus on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and only a few of them leverage supervised learning techniques. The recurrent reasons for avoiding supervised learning seem to be the difficulty in casting the right learning task, i.e., what is meaningful to predict, and how to obtain labels. Therefore, we first propose a novel supervised learning task that aims at predicting the quality of machine permutations. Then, we design an original methodology to estimate this quality, and we use these estimations to create an accurate sequential deep learning model (binary accuracy above 95%). Finally, we empirically demonstrate the value of predicting the quality of machine permutations by enhancing the performance of a simple Tabu Search algorithm inspired by the works in the literature.
Spectral Turán Type Problems on Cancellative Hypergraphs

Let $G$ be a cancellative $3$-uniform hypergraph in which the symmetric difference of any two edges is not contained in a third one. Equivalently, a $3$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is cancellative if and only if $G$ is $\{F_4, F_5\}$-free, where $F_4 = \{abc, abd, bcd\}$ and $F_5 = \{abc, abd, cde\}$. A classical result in extremal combinatorics stated that the maximum size of a cancellative hypergraph is achieved by the balanced complete tripartite $3$-uniform hypergraph, which was firstly proved by Bollobás and later by Keevash and Mubayi. In this paper, we consider spectral extremal problems for cancellative hypergraphs. More precisely, we determine the maximum $p$-spectral radius of cancellative $3$-uniform hypergraphs, and characterize the extremal hypergraph. As a by-product, we give an alternative proof of Bollobás' result from spectral viewpoint.
Conic Frameworks Infinitesimal Rigidity
This paper introduces new structures called conic frameworks and their rigidity. They are composed by agents and a set of directed constraints between pairs of agents. When the structure cannot be flexed while preserving the constraints, it is said to be rigid. If only smooth deformations are considered a sufficient condition for rigidity is called infinitesimal rigidity. In conic frameworks, each agent $u$ has a spatial position $x_u$ and a clock offset represented by a bias $β_u$. If the constraint from Agent $u$ to Agent $w$ is in the framework, the pseudo-range from $u$ to $w$, defined as ${\left\lVert{x_u - x_w}\right\rVert} + β_w - β_u$, is set. Pseudo-ranges appear when measuring inter-agent distances using a Time-of-Arrival method. This paper completely characterizes infinitesimal rigidity of conic frameworks whose agents are in general position. Two characterizations are introduced: one for unidimensional frameworks, the other for multidimensional frameworks. They both rely on the graph of constraints and use a decoupling between space and bias variables. In multidimensional cases, this new conic paradigm sharply reduces the minimal number of constraints required to maintain a formation with respect to classical Two-Way Ranging methods.
Intermediate symplectic $Q$-functions
We introduce an intermediate family of Laurent polynomials between Schur's $Q$-functions and S. Okada's symplectic $Q$-functions. It can also be regarded as a $Q$-function analogue of Proctor's intermediate symplectic characters, and is named the family of intermediate symplectic $Q$-functions. We also derive a tableau-sum formula and a Józefiak-Pragacz-type Pfaffian formula of the Laurent polynomials.
A relation on trees and the topological indices based on subgraph

A topological index reflects the physical, chemical and structural properties of a molecule, and its study has an important role in molecular topology, chemical graph theory and mathematical chemistry. It is a natural problem to characterize non-isomorphic graphs with the same topological index value. By introducing a relation on trees with respect to edge division vectors, denoted by $\langle\mathcal{T}_n, \preceq \rangle$, in this paper we give some results for the relation order in $\langle\mathcal{T}_n, \preceq \rangle$, it allows us to compare the size of the topological index value without relying on the specific forms of them, and naturally we can determine which trees have the same topological index value. Based on these results we characterize some classes of trees that are uniquely determined by their edge division vectors and construct infinite classes of non-isomorphic trees with the same topological index value, particularly such trees of order no more than $10$ are completely determined.
Haros graphs: an exotic representation of real numbers

This paper introduces Haros graphs, a construction which provides a graph-theoretical representation of real numbers in the unit interval reached via paths in the Farey binary tree. We show how the topological structure of Haros graphs yields a natural classification of the reals numbers into a hierarchy of families. To unveil such classification, we introduce an entropic functional on these graphs and show that it can be expressed, thanks to its fractal nature, in terms of a generalised de Rham curve. We show that this entropy reaches a global maximum at the reciprocal of the Golden number and otherwise displays a rich hierarchy of local maxima and minima that relate to specific families of irrationals (noble numbers) and rationals, overall providing an exotic classification and representation of the reals numbers according to entropic principles. We close the paper with a number of conjectures and outline a research programme on Haros graphs.
Counting rotational subsets of the circle $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ under the angle multiplying map $t\mapsto dt$
A rotational set is a finite subset $A$ of the unit circle $\mathbb{T}=\mathbb{R}/ \mathbb{Z}$ such that the angle-multiplying map $σ_{d}:t\mapsto dt$ maps $A$ onto itself by a cyclic permutation of its elements. Each rotational set has a geometric rotation number $p/q$. These sets were introduced by Lisa Goldberg to study the dynamics of complex polynomial maps. In this paper we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a set to be $σ_{d}$-rotational with rotation number $p/q$. As applications of our condition, we recover two classical results and enumerate $σ_d$-rotational sets with rotation number $p/q$ that consist of a given number of orbits.
