Group-Walk Random Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a construction that gives rise to a variety of "geometric" finite random graphs, and describe connections to the Poisson boundary, Naim's kernel, and Sznitman's random interlacements.

On covers of graphs by Cayley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every vertex transitive, planar, 1-ended, graph covers every graph whose balls of radius r are isomorphic to the ball of radius r in G for a sufficiently large r. We ask whether this is a general property of finitely presented Cayley graphs, as well as further related questions.

Every planar graph with the Liouville property is amenable
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a strengthening of the notion of transience for planar maps in order to relax the standard condition of bounded degree appearing in various results, in particular, the existence of Dirichlet harmonic functions proved by Benjamini and Schramm. As a corollary we obtain that every planar non-amenable graph admits Dirichlet harmonic functions.

On graph-like continua of finite length
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the notion of effective resistance to metric spaces that are similar to graphs but can also be similar to fractals. Combined with other basic facts proved in the paper, this lays the ground for a construction of Brownian Motion on such spaces completed in [10].

Hitting Times, Cover Cost, and the Wiener Index of a Tree
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit a close connection between hitting times of the simple random walk on a graph, the Wiener index, and related graph invariants. In the case of trees we obtain a simple identity relating hitting times to the Wiener index. It is well known that the vertices of any graph can be put in a linear preorder so that vertices appearing earlier in the preorder are "easier to reach" by a random walk, but "more difficult to get out of". We define various other natural preorders and study their relationships. These preorders coincide when the graph is a tree, but not necessarily otherwise. Our treatise is self-contained, and puts some known results relating the behaviour or random walk on a graph to its eigenvalues in a new perspective.

The Boundary of a Square Tiling of a Graph coincides with the Poisson Boundary
Published • View PublicationBIB
Answering a question of Benjamini & Schramm [8], we show that the Poisson boundary of any planar, uniquely absorbing (e.g. one-ended and transient) graph with bounded degrees can be realised geometrically as a circle, namely as the boundary of a tiling of a cylinder by squares. This implies a conjecture of Northshield [34] of similar flavour. For our proof we introduce a general criterion for identifying the Poisson boundary of a stochastic process that might have further applications.

On walk-regular graphs and graphs with symmetric hitting times
Aldous [1] asked whether every graph in which the distribution of the return time of random is independent of the starting vertex must be transitive. We remark that this question can be reduced into a purely graph-theoretic one that had already been answered Godsil & McKay [6] and ask some questions motivated by this.

Delay colourings of cubic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we prove the conjecture of \cite{HaWiWi} that every bipartite multigraph with integer edge delays admits an edge colouring with $d+1$ colours in the special case where $d=3$. A connection to the Brualdi-Ryser-Stein conjecture is discussed.

A Tractable Variant of Cover Time
We introduce a variant of the cover time of a graph, called cover cost, in which the cost of a step is proportional to the number of yet uncovered vertices. It turns out that cover cost is more tractable than cover time; we provide an $O(n^4)$ algorithm for its computation, as well as some explicit formulae. The two values are not very far from each other, and so cover cost might be a useful tool in the study of cover time.

New Bounds for Edge-Cover by Random Walk
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 23 (2014) 571-584 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the expected time for a random walk on a (multi-)graph $G$ to traverse all $m$ edges of $G$, and return to its starting point, is at most $2m^2$; if each edge must be traversed in both directions, the bound is $3m^2$. Both bounds are tight and may be applied to graphs with arbitrary edge lengths, with implications for Brownian motion on a finite or infinite network of total edge-length $m$.

On fixing boundary points of transitive hyperbolic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that there is no 1-ended, planar, hyperbolic graph such that the stabilizer of one of its hyperbolic boundary points acts transitively on the vertices of the graph. This gives a partial answer to a question by Kaimanovich and Woess.

The planar cubic Cayley graphs of connectivity 2
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify the planar cubic Cayley graphs of connectivity 2, providing an explicit presentation and embedding for each of them. Combined with [9] this yields a complete description of all planar cubic Cayley graphs.

The planar cubic Cayley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain a complete description of the planar cubic Cayley graphs, providing an explicit presentation and embedding for each of them. This turns out to be a rich class, comprising several infinite families. We obtain counterexamples to conjectures of Mohar, Bonnington and Watkins. Our analysis makes the involved graphs accessible to computation, corroborating a conjecture of Droms.

Characterising planar Cayley graphs and Cayley complexes in terms of group presentations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that a Cayley graph can be embedded in the euclidean plane without accumulation points of vertices if and only if it is the 1-skeleton of a Cayley complex that can be embedded in the plane after removing redundant simplices. We also give a characterisation of these Cayley graphs in term of group presentations, and deduce that they can be effectively enumerated.

Cycle decompositions: from graphs to continua
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalise a fundamental graph-theoretical fact, stating that every element of the cycle space of a graph is a sum of edge-disjoint cycles, to arbitrary continua. To achieve this we replace graph cycles by topological circles, and replace the cycle space of a graph by a new homology group for continua which is a quotient of the first singular homology group $H_1$. This homology seems to be particularly apt for studying spaces with infinitely generated $H_1$, e.g. infinite graphs or fractals.

Geodetic topological cycles in locally finite graphs
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 16 (2009), #R144 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the topological cycle space C(G) of a locally finite graph G is generated by its geodetic topological circles. We further show that, although the finite cycles of G generate C(G), its finite geodetic cycles need not generate C(G).
The Max-Flow Min-Cut Theorem for Countable Networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a strong version of the Max-Flow Min-Cut theorem for countable networks, namely that in every such network there exist a flow and a cut that are "orthogonal" to each other, in the sense that the flow saturates the cut and is zero on the reverse cut. If the network does not contain infinite trails then this flow can be chosen to be mundane, i.e. to be a sum of flows along finite paths. We show that in the presence of infinite trails there may be no orthogonal pair of a cut and a mundane flow. We finally show that for locally finite networks there is an orthogonal pair of a cut and a flow that satisfies Kirchhoff's first law also for ends.
Perfect matchings in r-partite r-graphs
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 30 (2009), 39-42 • View PublicationBIB
Let H be an r-partite r-graph, all of whose sides have the same size n. Suppose that there exist two sides of H, each satisfying the following condition: the degree of each legal (r-1)-tuple contained in the complement of this side is strictly larger than n/2. We prove that under this condition H must have a perfect matching. This answers a question of Kuhn and Osthus.
Strongly maximal matchings in infinite weighted graphs
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 15 (2008), #R136 • View PublicationBIB
Given an assignment of weights w to the edges of a graph G, a matching M in G is called strongly w-maximal if for any matching N the sum of weights of the edges in N\M is at most the sum of weights of the edges in M\N. We prove that if w assumes only finitely many values all of which are rational then G has a strongly w-maximal matching.
