Convergence Laws for Extensions of First-Order Logic with Averaging
For many standard models of random structure, first-order logic sentences exhibit a convergence phenomenon on random inputs. The most well-known example is for random graphs with constant edge probability, where the probabilities of first-order sentences converge to 0 or 1. In other cases, such as certain ``sparse random graph'' models, the probabilities of sentences converge, although not necessarily to 0 or 1. In this work we deal with extensions of first-order logic with aggregate operators, variations of averaging. These logics will consist of real-valued terms, and we allow arbitrary Lipschitz functions to be used as ``connectives''. We show that some of the well-known convergence laws extend to this setting.

First Order Logic of Sparse Graphs with Given Degree Sequences
We consider limit probabilities of first order properties in random graphs with a given degree sequence. Under mild conditions on the degree sequence, we show that the closure set of limit probabilities is a finite union of closed intervals. Moreover, we characterize the degree sequences for which this closure set is the interval $[0,1]$, a property that is intimately related with the probability that the random graph is acyclic. As a side result, we compile a full description of the cycle distribution of random graphs and study their fragment (disjoint union of unicyclic components) in the subcritical regime. Finally, we amend the proof of the existence of limit probabilities for first order properties in random graphs with a given degree sequence; this result was already claimed by Lynch~[IEEE LICS 2003] but his proof contained some inaccuracies.

Limiting probabilities of first order properties of random sparse graphs and hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G_n$ be the binomial random graph $G(n,p=c/n)$ in the sparse regime, which as is well-known undergoes a phase transition at $c=1$. Lynch (Random Structures Algorithms, 1992) showed that for every first order sentence $φ$, the limiting probability that $G_n$ satisfies $φ$ as $n\to\infty$ exists, and moreover it is an analytic function of $c$. In this paper we consider the closure $\overline{L_c}$ in $[0,1]$ of the set $L_c$ of all limiting probabilities of first order sentences in $G_n$. We show that there exists a critical value $c_0 \approx0.93$ such that $\overline{L_c}= [0,1]$ when $c \ge c_0$, whereas $\overline{L_c}$ misses at least one subinterval when $c<c_0$. We extend these results to random $d$-uniform sparse hypergraphs, where the probability of a hyperedge is given by $p=c/n^{d-1}$.
