Probability of a Condorcet Winner for Large Electorates: An Analytic Combinatorics Approach
We study the probability that a given candidate is an alpha-winner, i.e. a candidate preferred to each other candidate j by a fraction alpha_j of the voters. This extends the classical notion of Condorcet winner, which corresponds to the case alpha = (1/2, ..., 1/2). Our analysis is conducted under the general assumption that voters have independent preferences, illustrated through applications to well-known models such as Impartial Culture and the Mallows model. While previous works use probabilistic arguments to derive the limiting probability as the number of voters tends to infinity, we employ techniques from the field of analytic combinatorics to compute convergence rates and provide a method for obtaining higher-order terms in the asymptotic expansion. In particular, we establish that the probability of a given candidate being the Condorcet winner in Impartial Culture is a_0 + a_{1, n} n^{-1/2} + O(n^{-1}), where we explicitly provide the values of the constant a_0 and the coefficient a_{1, n}, which depends solely on the parity of the number of voters n. Along the way, we derive technical results in multivariate analytic combinatorics that may be of independent interest.
The Erdős-Rényi Random Graph Conditioned on Every Component Being a Clique
Motivated by an application in community detection, we consider an \ER random graph conditioned on the rare event that all connected components are fully connected. Such graphs can be considered as partitions of vertices into cliques. Hence, this conditional distribution defines a distribution over partitions. We show that a popular community detection method is equivalent to Bayesian inference with this distribution as prior over the community partitions. Using tools from analytic combinatorics, we prove limit theorems for several graph observables in this conditional distribution: the number of cliques; the number of edges; and the degree distribution. We consider several regimes of the connection probability $p$ as the number of vertices $n$ diverges. For $p=\tfrac{1}{2}$, the conditioning yields the uniform distribution over set partitions, which is well-studied, but has not been studied as a graph distribution before. For $p<\tfrac{1}{2}$, we show that the number of cliques is of the order $n/\sqrt{\log n}$, while for $p>\tfrac{1}{2}$, we prove that the graph consists of a single clique with high probability. This shows that there is a phase transition at $p=\tfrac{1}{2}$. We additionally study the near-critical regime $p_n\downarrow\tfrac{1}{2}$, as well as the sparse regime $p_n\downarrow0$. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results for community detection.
Chordal graphs with bounded tree-width
Given $t\geq 2$ and $0\leq k\leq t$, we prove that the number of labelled $k$-connected chordal graphs with $n$ vertices and tree-width at most $t$ is asymptotically $c n^{-5/2} γ^n n!$, as $n\to\infty$, for some constants $c,γ>0$ depending on $t$ and $k$. Additionally, we show that the number of $i$-cliques ($2\leq i\leq t$) in a uniform random $k$-connected chordal graph with tree-width at most $t$ is normally distributed as $n\to\infty$.
The asymptotic enumeration of graphs of tree-width at most $t$ is wide open for $t\geq 3$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first non-trivial class of graphs with bounded tree-width where the asymptotic counting problem is solved. Our starting point is the work of Wormald [Counting Labelled Chordal Graphs, Graphs and Combinatorics (1985)], were an algorithm is developed to obtain the exact number of labelled chordal graphs on $n$ vertices.

We prove that the class of 231-avoiding permutations satisfies a logical limit law, i.e. that for any first-order sentence $Ψ$, in the language of two total orders, the probability $p_{n,Ψ}$ that a uniform random 231-avoiding permutation of size $n$ satisfies $Ψ$ admits a limit as $n$ is large. Moreover, we establish two further results about the behavior and value of $p_{n,Ψ}$: (i) it is either bounded away from $0$, or decays exponentially fast; (ii) the set of possible limits is dense in $[0,1]$. Our tools come mainly from analytic combinatorics and singularity analysis.
Random cubic planar maps

We analyse uniform random cubic rooted planar maps and obtain limiting distributions for several parameters of interest. From the enumerative point of view, we present a unified approach for the enumeration of several classes of cubic planar maps, which allow us to recover known results in a more general and transparent way. This approach allows us to obtain new enumerative results.
Concerning random maps, we first obtain the distribution of the degree of the root face, which has an exponential tail as for other classes of random maps. Our main result is a limiting map-Airy distribution law for the size of the largest block $L$, whose expectation is asymptotically $n/\sqrt{3}$ in a random cubic map with $n+2$ faces. We prove analogous results for the size of the largest cubic block, obtained from $L$ by erasing all vertices of degree two, and for the size of the largest 3-connected component, whose expected values are respectively $n/2$ and $n/4$. To obtain these results we need to analyse a new type of composition scheme which has not been treated by Banderier et al. [Random Structures Algorithms 2001].
Enumeration of rooted 3-connected bipartite planar maps

We provide the first solution to the problem of counting rooted 3-connected bipartite planar maps. Our starting point is the enumeration of bicoloured planar maps according to the number of edges and monochromatic edges, following Bernardi and Bousquet-Mélou [J. Comb. Theory Ser. B, 101 (2011), 315-377]. The decomposition of a map into 2- and 3-connected components allows us to obtain the generating functions of 2-and 3-connected bicoloured maps. Setting to zero the variable marking monochromatic edges we obtain the generating function of 3-connected bipartite maps, which is algebraic of degree 26. We deduce from it an asymptotic estimate for the number of 3-connected bipartite planar maps of the form $t \cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n$, where $γ=ρ^{-1} \approx 2.40958$ and $ρ\approx 0.41501$ is an algebraic number of degree 10.
Enumeration of chordal planar graphs and maps
We determine the number of labelled chordal planar graphs with $n$ vertices, which is asymptotically $c_1\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n n!$ for a constant $c_1>0$ and $γ\approx 11.89235$. We also determine the number of rooted simple chordal planar maps with $n$ edges, which is asymptotically $c_2 n^{-3/2} δ^n$, where $δ= 1/σ\approx 6.40375$, and $σ$ is an algebraic number of degree 12. The proofs are based on combinatorial decompositions and singularity analysis. Chordal planar graphs (or maps) are a natural example of a subcritical class of graphs in which the class of 3-connected graphs is relatively rich. The 3-connected members are precisely chordal triangulations, those obtained starting from $K_4$ by repeatedly adding vertices adjacent to an existing triangular face.
Cut Vertices in Random Planar Maps

The main goal of this paper is to determine the asymptotic behavior of the number $X_n$ of cut-vertices in random planar maps with $n$ edges. It is shown that $X_n/n \to c$ in probability (for some explicit $c>0$). For so-called subcritical classes of planar maps (like outerplanar maps) we obtain a central limit theorem, too. Interestingly the combinatorics behind this seemingly simple problem is quite involved.

Let $G_n$ be the binomial random graph $G(n,p=c/n)$ in the sparse regime, which as is well-known undergoes a phase transition at $c=1$.
Lynch (Random Structures Algorithms, 1992) showed that for every first order sentence $φ$, the limiting probability that $G_n$ satisfies $φ$ as $n\to\infty$ exists, and moreover it is an analytic function of $c$. In this paper we consider the closure $\overline{L_c}$ in $[0,1]$ of the set $L_c$ of all limiting probabilities of first order sentences in $G_n$. We show that there exists a critical value $c_0 \approx0.93$ such that $\overline{L_c}= [0,1]$ when $c \ge c_0$, whereas $\overline{L_c}$ misses at least one subinterval when $c<c_0$. We extend these results to random $d$-uniform sparse hypergraphs, where the probability of a hyperedge is given by $p=c/n^{d-1}$.

A well-known conjecture by Lovász and Plummer from the 1970s asserted that a bridgeless cubic graph has exponentially many perfect matchings. It was solved in the affirmative by Esperet et al. (Adv. Math. 2011). On the other hand, Chudnovsky and Seymour (Combinatorica 2012) proved the conjecture in the special case of cubic planar graphs. In our work we consider random bridgeless cubic planar graphs with the uniform distribution on graphs with $n$ vertices. Under this model we show that the expected number of perfect matchings in labeled bridgeless cubic planar graphs is asymptotically $cγ^n$, where $c>0$ and $γ\sim 1.14196$ is an explicit algebraic number. We also compute the expected number of perfect matchings in (non necessarily bridgeless) cubic planar graphs and provide lower bounds for unlabeled graphs. Our starting point is a correspondence between counting perfect matchings in rooted cubic planar maps and the partition function of the Ising model in rooted triangulations.
Universal singular exponents in catalytic variable equations

Catalytic equations appear in several combinatorial applications, most notably in the numeration of lattice path and in the enumeration of planar maps. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the asymptotic estimate for the coefficients of the solutions of (so-called) positive catalytic equations has a universal asymptotic behavior. In particular, this provides a rationale why the number of maps of size $n$ in various planar map classes grows asymptotically like $c\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n$, for suitable positive constants $c$ and $γ$. Essentially we have to distinguish between linear catalytic equations (where the subexponential growth is $n^{-3/2}$) and non-linear catalytic equations (where we have $n^{-5/2}$ as in planar maps). Furthermore we provide a quite general central limit theorem for parameters that can be encoded by catalytic functional equations, even when they are not positive.

Let $L$ be subset of $\{3,4,\dots\}$ and let $X_{n,M}^{(L)}$ be the number of cycles belonging to unicyclic components whose length is in $L$ in the random graph $G(n,M)$. We find the limiting distribution of $X_{n,M}^{(L)}$ in the subcritical regime $M=cn$ with $c<1/2$ and the critical regime $M=\frac{n}{2}\left(1+μn^{-1/3}\right)$ with $μ=O(1)$. Depending on the regime and a condition involving the series $\sum_{l \in L} \frac{z^l}{2l}$, we obtain in the limit either a Poisson or a normal distribution as $n\to\infty$.

This work is a follow-up of the article [Proc.\ London Math.\ Soc.\ 119(2):358--378, 2019], where the authors solved the problem of counting labelled 4-regular planar graphs. In this paper, we obtain a precise asymptotic estimate for the number $g_n$ of labelled 4-regular planar graphs on $n$ vertices. Our estimate is of the form $g_n \sim g\cdot n^{-7/2} ρ^{-n} n!$, where $g>0$ is a constant and $ρ\approx 0.24377$ is the radius of convergence of the generating function $\sum_{n\ge 0}g_n x^n/n!$, and conforms to the universal pattern obtained previously in the enumeration of several classes of planar graphs. In addition to analytic methods, our solution needs intensive use of computer algebra in order to deal with large systems of multivariate polynomial equations. We also obtain asymptotic estimates for the number of 2- and 3-connected 4-regular planar graphs, and for the number of 4-regular simple maps, both connected and 2-connected.

We provide precise asymptotic estimates for the number of several classes of labelled cubic planar graphs, and we analyze properties of such random graphs under the uniform distribution. This model was first analyzed by Bodirsky et al. (Random Structures Algorithms 2007). We revisit their work and obtain new results on the enumeration of cubic planar graphs and on random cubic planar graphs. In particular, we determine the exact probability of a random cubic planar graph being connected, and we show that the distribution of the number of triangles in random cubic planar graphs is asymptotically normal with linear expectation and variance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time one is able to determine the asymptotic distribution for the number of copies of a fixed graph containing a cycle in classes of random planar graphs arising from planar maps.
The first order convergence law fails for random perfect graphs
We consider first order expressible properties of random perfect graphs. That is, we pick a graph $G_n$ uniformly at random from all (labelled) perfect graphs on $n$ vertices and consider the probability that it satisfies some graph property that can be expressed in the first order language of graphs. We show that there exists such a first order expressible property for which the probability that $G_n$ satisfies it does not converge as $n\to\infty$.

We present the first combinatorial scheme for counting labelled 4-regular planar graphs through a complete recursive decomposition. More precisely, we show that the exponential generating function of labelled 4-regular planar graphs can be computed effectively as the solution of a system of equations, from which the coefficients can be extracted. As a byproduct, we also enumerate labelled 3-connected 4-regular planar graphs, and simple 4-regular rooted maps.
The number of labeled graphs of bounded treewidth

We focus on counting the number of labeled graphs on $n$ vertices and treewidth at most $k$ (or equivalently, the number of labeled partial $k$-trees), which we denote by $T_{n,k}$. So far, only the particular cases $T_{n,1}$ and $T_{n,2}$ had been studied. We show that $$ \left(c \cdot \frac{k\cdot 2^k \cdot n}{\log k} \right)^n \cdot 2^{-\frac{k(k+3)}{2}} \cdot k^{-2k-2}\ \leq\ T_{n,k}\ \leq\ \left(k \cdot 2^k \cdot n\right)^n \cdot 2^{-\frac{k(k+1)}{2}} \cdot k^{-k}, $$ for $k > 1$ and some explicit absolute constant $c > 0$. The upper bound is an immediate consequence of the well-known number of labeled $k$-trees, while the lower bound is obtained from an explicit algorithmic construction. It follows from this construction that both bounds also apply to graphs of pathwidth and proper-pathwidth at most $k$.

We find precise asymptotic estimates for the number of planar maps and graphs with a condition on the minimum degree, and properties of random graphs from these classes. In particular we show that the size of the largest tree attached to the core of a random planar graph is of order c log(n) for an explicit constant c. These results provide new information on the structure of random planar graphs.
Logical limit laws for minor-closed classes of graphs

Let $\mathcal G$ be an addable, minor-closed class of graphs. We prove that the zero-one law holds in monadic second-order logic (MSO) for the random graph drawn uniformly at random from all {\em connected} graphs in $\mathcal G$ on $n$ vertices, and the convergence law in MSO holds if we draw uniformly at random from all graphs in $\mathcal G$ on $n$ vertices. We also prove analogues of these results for the class of graphs embeddable on a fixed surface, provided we restrict attention to first order logic (FO). Moreover, the limiting probability that a given FO sentence is satisfied is independent of the surface $S$. We also prove that the closure of the set of limiting probabilities is always the finite union of at least two disjoint intervals, and that it is the same for FO and MSO. For the classes of forests and planar graphs we are able to determine the closure of the set of limiting probabilities precisely. For planar graphs it consists of exactly 108 intervals, each of length $\approx 5\cdot 10^{-6}$. Finally, we analyse examples of non-addable classes where the behaviour is quite different. For instance, the zero-one law does not hold for the random caterpillar on $n$ vertices, even in FO.
Maximum degree in minor-closed classes of graphs
Given a class of graphs G closed under taking minors, we study the maximum degree Δ_n of random graphs from G with n vertices. We prove several lower and upper bounds that hold with high probability. Among other results, we find classes of graphs providing orders of magnitude for Δ_n not observed before, such us \log n/ \log \log \log n and \log n/ \log \log \log \log n.
