A note on the $k$-defect number: Vertex Coloring with a Fixed Number of Monochromatic Edges
In this paper, we introduce and study a novel graph parameter called the $k$-defect number, denoted $φ_{k}(G)$, for a graph $G$ and an integer $0\leq k\leq |E(G)|$. Unlike traditional defective colorings that bound the local degree within monochromatic components, the $k$-defect number represents the smallest number of colors required to achieve a vertex coloring of $G$ having exactly \emph{$k$ monochromatic edges (also termed ``bad edges")}. This parameter generalizes the well-known chromatic number of a graph, $χ(G)$, which is precisely $φ_{0}(G)$. We establish fundamental properties of the $k$-defect number and derive bounds on $φ_{k}(G)$ for specific graph classes, including trees, cycles, and wheels. Furthermore, we extend and generalize several classical properties of the chromatic number to this new edge-centric $k$-defect framework for values of $1\leq k\leq |E(G)|$.

Wiener index in graphs with given minimum degree and maximum degree
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23 no. 1, Graph Theory (June 3, 2021) dmtcs:6956 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$.The Wiener index $W(G)$ of $G$ is the sum of the distances between all unordered pairs of vertices of $G$. In this paper we show that the well-known upper bound $\big( \frac{n}{δ+1}+2\big) {n \choose 2}$ on the Wiener index of a graph of order $n$ and minimum degree $δ$ [M. Kouider, P. Winkler, Mean distance and minimum degree. J. Graph Theory 25 no. 1 (1997)] can be improved significantly if the graph contains also a vertex of large degree. Specifically, we give the asymptotically sharp bound $W(G) \leq {n-Δ+δ\choose 2} \frac{n+2Δ}{δ+1}+ 2n(n-1)$ on the Wiener index of a graph $G$ of order $n$, minimum degree $δ$ and maximum degree $Δ$. We prove a similar result for triangle-free graphs, and we determine a bound on the Wiener index of $C_4$-free graphs of given order, minimum and maximum degree and show that it is, in some sense, best possible.

Upper Bounds on the average eccentricity of Graphs of Girth $6$ and $(C_4$, $C_5)$-free Graphs
Let $G$ be a finite, connected graph. The eccentricity of a vertex $v$ of $G$ is the distance from $v$ to a vertex farthest from $v$. The average eccentricity of $G$ is the arithmetic mean of the eccentricities of the vertices of $G$. We show that the average eccentricity of a connected graph $G$ of girth at least six is at most $\frac{9}{2} \lceil \frac{n}{2δ^2 - 2δ+2} \rceil + 7$, where $n$ is the order of $G$ and $δ$ its minimum degree. We construct graphs that show that whenever $δ-1$ is a prime power, then this bound is sharp apart from an additive constant. For graphs containing a vertex of large degree we give an improved bound. We further show that if the girth condition on $G$ is relaxed to $G$ having neither a $4$-cycle nor a $5$-cycle as a subgraph, then similar and only slightly weaker bounds hold.
