A note on the $k$-defect number: Vertex Coloring with a Fixed Number of Monochromatic Edges
In this paper, we introduce and study a novel graph parameter called the $k$-defect number, denoted $φ_{k}(G)$, for a graph $G$ and an integer $0\leq k\leq |E(G)|$. Unlike traditional defective colorings that bound the local degree within monochromatic components, the $k$-defect number represents the smallest number of colors required to achieve a vertex coloring of $G$ having exactly \emph{$k$ monochromatic edges (also termed ``bad edges")}. This parameter generalizes the well-known chromatic number of a graph, $χ(G)$, which is precisely $φ_{0}(G)$. We establish fundamental properties of the $k$-defect number and derive bounds on $φ_{k}(G)$ for specific graph classes, including trees, cycles, and wheels. Furthermore, we extend and generalize several classical properties of the chromatic number to this new edge-centric $k$-defect framework for values of $1\leq k\leq |E(G)|$.
Iteration of the mincut graph operator
A graph operator is a mapping $φ$ which maps every graph $G$ from some class of graphs to a new graph $φ(G)$. In this paper, we introduce and study the properties of the mincut operator, specifically the effects of iteration of the operator. We show that the property of being super edge-connected and regular is both necessary and sufficient for a graph to remain fixed under the mincut operator. Furthermore, we show that no graph diverges under iteration of this operator. We conclude by stating further research questions on the mincut operator.
An introduction to the mincut graph of a graph
There is a well-documented research programme on graph operators which addresses questions such as `Which graphs appear as images of graphs?'; `Which graphs are fixed under the operator?'; `What happens if the operator is iterated?' In this paper, we introduce an intersection graph called the mincut graph and state its characteristics. We address some of the research programme questions for the mincut graph operator and conclude by stating further research questions on the mincut graph.

A classic exercise in the topology of surfaces is to show that, using handle slides, every disc-band surface, or 1-vertex ribbon graph, can be put in a canonical form consisting of the connected sum of orientable loops, and either non-orientable loops or pairs of interlaced orientable loops. Motivated by the principle that ribbon graph theory informs delta-matroid theory, we find the delta-matroid analogue of this surface classification. We show that, using a delta-matroid analogue of handle-slides, every binary delta-matroid in which the empty set is feasible can be written in a canonical form consisting of the direct sum of the delta-matroids of orientable loops, and either non-orientable loops or pairs of interlaced orientable loops. Our delta-matroid results are compatible with the surface results in the sense that they are their ribbon graphic delta-matroidal analogues.
