Convergence of discrete period matrices and discrete holomorphic integrals for ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the class of compact Riemann surfaces which are ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere $\hat{\mathbb{C}}$. Based on a triangulation of this covering of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2\cong \hat{\mathbb{C}}$ and its stereographic projection, we define discrete (multi-valued) harmonic and holomorphic functions. We prove that the corresponding discrete period matrices converge to their continuous counterparts. In order to achieve an error estimate, which is linear in the maximal edge length of the triangles, we suitably adapt the triangulations in a neighborhood of every branch point. Finally, we also prove a convergence result for discrete holomorphic integrals for our adapted triangulations of the ramified covering.

Discrete Riemann surfaces based on quadrilateral cellular decompositions
Published in Advances in Mathematics 311 (2017), pp. 885-932 • View PublicationBIB
Our aim in this paper is to provide a theory of discrete Riemann surfaces based on quadrilateral cellular decompositions of Riemann surfaces together with their complex structure encoded by complex weights. Previous work, in particular of Mercat, mainly focused on real weights corresponding to quadrilateral cells having orthogonal diagonals. We discuss discrete coverings, discrete exterior calculus, and discrete Abelian integrals. Our presentation includes several new notions and results such as branched coverings of discrete Riemann surfaces, the discrete Riemann-Hurwitz Formula, double poles of discrete one-forms and double values of discrete meromorphic functions that enter the discrete Riemann-Roch Theorem, and a discrete Abel-Jacobi map.

Discrete complex analysis on planar quad-graphs
Published in Advances in Discrete Differential Geometry, A.I. Bobenko (ed.), Springer (2016), pp. 57-132 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a linear theory of discrete complex analysis on general quad-graphs, continuing and extending previous work of Duffin, Mercat, Kenyon, Chelkak and Smirnov on discrete complex analysis on rhombic quad-graphs. Our approach based on the medial graph yields more instructive proofs of discrete analogs of several classical theorems and even new results. We provide discrete counterparts of fundamental concepts in complex analysis such as holomorphic functions, derivatives, the Laplacian, and exterior calculus. Also, we discuss discrete versions of important basic theorems such as Green's identities and Cauchy's integral formulae. For the first time, we discretize Green's first identity and Cauchy's integral formula for the derivative of a holomorphic function. In this paper, we focus on planar quad-graphs, but we would like to mention that many notions and theorems can be adapted to discrete Riemann surfaces in a straightforward way. In the case of planar parallelogram-graphs with bounded interior angles and bounded ratio of side lengths, we construct a discrete Green's function and discrete Cauchy's kernels with asymptotics comparable to the smooth case. Further restricting to the integer lattice of a two-dimensional skew coordinate system yields appropriate discrete Cauchy's integral formulae for higher order derivatives.

Alexandrov's theorem, weighted Delaunay triangulations, and mixed volumes
Published in Annales de l'Institut Fourier 58:2 (2008) 447-505 • View PublicationBIB
We present a constructive proof of Alexandrov's theorem regarding the existence of a convex polytope with a given metric on the boundary. The polytope is obtained as a result of a certain deformation in the class of generalized convex polytopes with the given boundary. We study the space of generalized convex polytopes and discover a relation with the weighted Delaunay triangulations of polyhedral surfaces. The existence of the deformation follows from the non-degeneracy of the Hessian of the total scalar curvature of a positively curved generalized convex polytope. The latter is shown to be equal to the Hessian of the volume of the dual generalized polyhedron. We prove the non-degeneracy by generalizing the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality. Our construction of a convex polytope from a given metric is implemented in a computer program.

A discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator for simplicial surfaces
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 38:4 (2007) 740-756 • View PublicationBIB
We define a discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator for simplicial surfaces. It depends only on the intrinsic geometry of the surface and its edge weights are positive. Our Laplace operator is similar to the well known finite-elements Laplacian (the so called ``cotan formula'') except that it is based on the intrinsic Delaunay triangulation of the simplicial surface. This leads to new definitions of discrete harmonic functions, discrete mean curvature, and discrete minimal surfaces. The definition of the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator depends on the existence and uniqueness of Delaunay tessellations in piecewise flat surfaces. While the existence is known, we prove the uniqueness. Using Rippa's Theorem we show that, as claimed, Musin's harmonic index provides an optimality criterion for Delaunay triangulations, and this can be used to prove that the edge flipping algorithm terminates also in the setting of piecewise flat surfaces.

A conformal energy for simplicial surfaces
Published in Combinatorial and Computational Geometry, MSRI Publications, V. 52, 2005,133-143 • View PublicationBIB
A new functional for simplicial surfaces is suggested. It is invariant with respect to Moebius transformations and is a discrete analogue of the Willmore functional. Minima of this functional are investigated. as an application a bending energy for discrete thin-shells is derived.
Minimal surfaces from circle patterns: Geometry from combinatorics
Published in Ann. of Math. 164:1 (2006), 231-264 • View PublicationBIB
We suggest a new definition for discrete minimal surfaces in terms of sphere packings with orthogonally intersecting circles. These discrete minimal surfaces can be constructed from Schramm's circle patterns. We present a variational principle which allows us to construct discrete analogues of some classical minimal surfaces. The data used for the construction are purely combinatorial--the combinatorics of the curvature line pattern. A Weierstrass-type representation and an associated family are derived. We show the convergence to continuous minimal surfaces.
