Discrete Laplacians -- spherical and hyperbolic

The discrete Laplacian on Euclidean triangulated surfaces is a well-established notion. We introduce discrete Laplacians on spherical and hyperbolic triangulated surfaces. On the one hand, our definitions are close to the Euclidean one in that the edge weights contain the cotangents of certain combinations of angles and are non-negative if and only if the triangulation is Delaunay. On the other hand, these discretizations are structure-preserving in several respects. We prove that the area of a convex polyhedron can be written in terms of the discrete spherical Laplacian of the support function, whose expression is the same as the area of a smooth convex body in terms of the usual spherical Laplacian. We show that the conformal factors of discrete conformal vector fields on a triangulated surface of curvature $k \in \{-1,1\}$ are $-2k$-eigenfunctions of our discrete Laplacians, exactly as in the smooth setting. The discrete conformality can be understood here both in the sense of the vertex scaling and in the sense of circle patterns. Finally, we connect the $-2k$-eigenfunctions to infinitesimal isometric deformations of a polyhedron inscribed into corresponding quadrics.
Simplicial moves on balanced complexes

We introduce a notion of cross-flips: local moves that transform a balanced (i.e., properly $(d+1)$-colored) triangulation of a combinatorial $d$-manifold into another balanced triangulation. These moves form a natural analog of bistellar flips (also known as Pachner moves). Specifically, we establish the following theorem: any two balanced triangulations of a closed combinatorial $d$-manifold can be connected by a sequence of cross-flips. Along the way we prove that for every $m \geq d+2$ and any closed combinatorial $d$-manifold $M$, two $m$-colored triangulations of $M$ can be connected by a sequence of bistellar flips that preserve the vertex colorings.
Color or cover
If all but two vertices of a triangulated sphere have degrees divisible by $k$, then the exceptional vertices are not adjacent. This theorem is proved for $k=2$ with the help of the coloring monodromy. For $k = 3, 4, 5$ colorings by the vertices of platonic solids have to be used. With a coloring monodromy one can associate a branched cover. This generalizes to a space of germs between two triangulated surfaces. We also discuss relations with Belyi surfaces and with cone-metrics of constant curvature.

We give a simple proof that some iterated derived subdivision of every PL sphere is combinatorially equivalent to the boundary of a simplicial polytope, thereby resolving a problem of Billera (personal communication).

We are generalizing to higher dimensions the Bavard-Ghys construction of the hyperbolic metric on the space of polygons with fixed directions of edges.
The space of convex d-dimensional polyhedra with fixed directions of facet normals has a decomposition into type cones that correspond to different combinatorial types of polyhedra. This decomposition is a subfan of the secondary fan of a vector configuration and can be analyzed with the help of Gale diagrams.
We construct a family of quadratic forms on each of the type cones using the theory of mixed volumes. The Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities ensure that these forms have exactly one positive eigenvalue. This introduces a piecewise hyperbolic structure on the space of similarity classes of polyhedra with fixed directions of facet normals. We show that some of the dihedral angles on the boundary of the resulting cone-manifold are equal to π/2.

There is no 5,7-triangulation of the torus, that is, no triangulation with exactly two exceptional vertices, of degree 5 and 7. Similarly, there is no 3,5-quadrangulation. The vertices of a 2,4-hexangulation of the torus cannot be bicolored. Similar statements hold for 4,8-triangulations and 2,6-quadrangulations. We prove these results, of which the first two are known and the others seem to be new, as corollaries of a theorem on the holonomy group of a euclidean cone metric on the torus with just two cone points. We provide two proofs of this theorem: One argument is metric in nature, the other relies on the induced conformal structure and proceeds by invoking the residue theorem. Similar methods can be used to prove a theorem of Dress on infinite triangulations of the plane with exactly two irregular vertices. The non-existence results for torus decompositions provide infinite families of graphs which cannot be embedded in the torus.
The Colin de Verdière number and graphs of polytopes

The Colin de Verdière number $μ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the maximum corank of a Colin de Verdière matrix for $G$ (that is, of a Schrödinger operator on $G$ with a single negative eigenvalue). In 2001, Lovász gave a construction that associated to every convex 3-polytope a Colin de Verdière matrix of corank 3 for its 1-skeleton.
We generalize the Lovász construction to higher dimensions by interpreting it as minus the Hessian matrix of the volume of the polar dual. As a corollary, $μ(G) \ge d$ if $G$ is the 1-skeleton of a convex $d$-polytope.
Determination of the signature of the Hessian of the volume is based on the second Minkowski inequality for mixed volumes and on Bol's condition for equality.

We present a constructive proof of Alexandrov's theorem regarding the existence of a convex polytope with a given metric on the boundary. The polytope is obtained as a result of a certain deformation in the class of generalized convex polytopes with the given boundary. We study the space of generalized convex polytopes and discover a relation with the weighted Delaunay triangulations of polyhedral surfaces. The existence of the deformation follows from the non-degeneracy of the Hessian of the total scalar curvature of a positively curved generalized convex polytope. The latter is shown to be equal to the Hessian of the volume of the dual generalized polyhedron. We prove the non-degeneracy by generalizing the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality. Our construction of a convex polytope from a given metric is implemented in a computer program.
Branched Coverings, Triangulations, and 3-Manifolds
A canonical branched covering over each sufficiently good simplicial complex is constructed. Its structure depends on the combinatorial type of the complex. In this way, each closed orientable 3-manifold arises as a branched covering over the 3-sphere from some triangulation of S^3. This result is related to a theorem of Hilden and Montesinos. The branched coverings introduced admit a rich theory in which the group of projectivities plays a central role.
