Ergodic-transformation centralizers and essentially non-compact graphing symmetry
We prove that for every ergodic transformation $T$ on an infinite standard probability space both the automorphism group (i.e. centralizer) $\mathrm{Aut}(T)$ and its reversing automorphism group are realizable as symmetry groups of graphings. This is an analogue of Sabidussi's realization of arbitrary graph-automorphism groups, and provides numerous examples of graphing automorphism groups carrying no compatible compact topology, answering a question of Lovasz'. Another consequence of discussion and ensuing constructions is the existence of large mutually locally-globally equivalent graphing families with highly variable symmetry.

Rigid ternary relations in finite-dimensional Hilbert-space Grassmannians
For positive integers $1\le r<d<n$ consider subsets $S\subseteq \mathbb{G}(r,V)$ of the $r$-plane Grassmannian of an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space $V$ saturated in the sense that the $r$-plane $η''$ belongs to $S$ whenever it is the orthogonal projection of $η'\in S$ onto a $d$-plane through $η\in S$. Motivated by such closure operators' natural occurrence in projective-geometry and linear preserver problems, we classify said saturated sets as precisely the disjoint unions of Grassmannian spines, with cores standing in a relation of mutual separation that can be made precise (a spine being the set of $r$-planes containing a fixed core $k$-plane $π$ for some $0\le k\le r$). This generalizes the author's results describing saturated $r$-plane sets in the tame dimensional regime $2r\le d$, where the disjoint unions in question by necessity collapse to single spines.

Eigenvalue collision and exotic preservers on semisimple operators
We classify $n\times n$-matrix-valued continuous commutativity and spectrum preservers defined on spaces of (a) normal, (b) semisimple and (c) arbitrary $n\times n$ matrices with spectra contained in sufficiently connected subsets $\mathcal{X}\subseteq \mathbb{C}$, generalizing a number of results due to Šemrl, Gogić, Tomašević and the author among others. In case (a) these are always conjugations or transpose conjugations, while in cases (b) and (c) qualitatively distinct possibilities arise depending on the local regularity of the complex-conjugation map close to coincident-eigenvalue loci of $\mathcal{X}^n$.

Frame eversion and contextual geometric rigidity
We prove rigidity results describing contextually-constrained maps defined on Grassmannians and manifolds of ordered independent line tuples in finite-dimensional vector or Hilbert spaces. One statement in the spirit of the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry classifies maps between full Grassmannians of two $n$-dimensional Hilbert spaces, $n\ge 3$, preserving dimension and lattice operations for pairs with commuting orthogonal projections, as precisely those induced by semilinear injections unique up to scaling. In a different but related direction, denote the manifolds of ordered orthogonal (linearly-independent) $n$-tuples of lines in an $n$-dimensional Hilbert space $V$ by $\mathbb{F}^{\perp}(V)$ (respectively $\mathbb{F}(V)$) and, for partitions $π$ of the set $\{1..n\}$, call two tuples $π$-linked if the spans along $π$-blocks agree. A Wigner-style rigidity theorem proves that the symmetric maps $\mathbb{F}^{\perp}(\mathbb{C}^n)\to \mathbb{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$, $n\ge 3$ respecting $π$-linkage are precisely those induced by semilinear injections, hence by linear or conjugate-linear maps if also assumed measurable. On the other hand, in the $\mathbb{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$-defined analogue the only other possibility is a qualitatively new type of purely-contextual-global symmetry transforming a tuple $(\ell_i)_i$ of lines into $\left(\left(\bigoplus_{j\ne i}\ell_j\right)^{\perp}\right)_i$.

Fano schemes of sub-maximal elementary symmetric functions
Denote by $E_r$ the $r^{th}$ elementary symmetric polynomial in $\dim V$ variables for a vector space $V$ over an infinite field $\Bbbk$. We describe the rational points on the Fano scheme $F_{d-1}(Z(E_{\dim V-1}))$ of projective $(d-1)$-spaces contained in the zero locus of $E_{\dim V-1}$. Isolated points exist precisely for $\dim V=2d$, in which case they are in bijection with the $1\cdot 3\cdots (2d-1)$ pairings on a $2d$-element set. This, in particular, confirming a conjecture of Ambartsoumian, Auel and Jebelli to the effect that (over $\mathbb{R}$) all isolated points are recoverable via integral star transforms with appropriate symbols.

Spectral selections, commutativity preservation and Coxeter-Lipschitz maps
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system whose graph is connected, with no infinite edges. A self-map $τ$ of $W$ such that $τ_{σθ}\in \{τ_θ,\ στ_θ\}$ for all $θ\in W$ and all reflections $σ$ (analogous to being 1-Lipschitz with respect to the Bruhat order on $W$) is either constant or a right translation. A somewhat stronger version holds for $S_n$, where it suffices that $σ$ range over smaller, $θ$-dependent sets of reflections. These combinatorial results have a number of consequences concerning continuous spectrum- and commutativity-preserving maps $\mathrm{SU}(n)\to M_n$ defined on special unitary groups: every such map is a conjugation composed with (a) the identity; (b) transposition, or (c) a continuous diagonal spectrum selection. This parallels and recovers Petek's analogous statement for self-maps of the space $H_n\le M_n$ of self-adjoint matrices, strengthening it slightly by expanding the codomain to $M_n$.

Prescribed duality dynamics in comodule categories
We prove that there exist Hopf algebras with surjective, non-bijective antipode which admit no non-trivial morphisms from Hopf algebras with bijective antipode; in particular, they are not quotients of such. This answers a question left open in prior work, and contrasts with the dual setup whereby a Hopf algebra has injective antipode precisely when it embeds into one with bijective antipode. The examples rely on the broader phenomenon of realizing pre-specified subspace lattices as comodule lattices: for a finite-dimensional vector space $V$ and a sequence $(\mathcal{L}_r)_r$ of successively finer lattices of subspaces thereof, assuming the minimal subquotients of the supremum $\bigvee_r \mathcal{L}_r$ are all at least 2-dimensional, there is a Hopf algebra equipping $V$ with a comodule structure in such a fashion that the lattice of comodules of the $r^{th}$ dual comodule $V^{r*}$ is precisely the given $\mathcal{L}_r$.

Quadratic rotation symmetric Boolean functions
Let $(0, a_1, \ldots, a_{d-1})_n$ denote the function $f_n(x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1})$ of degree $d$ in $n$ variables generated by the monomial $x_0x_{a_1} \cdots x_{a_{d-1}}$ and having the property that $f_n$ is invariant under cyclic permutations of the variables. Such a function $f_n$ is called monomial rotation symmetric (MRS). Much of this paper extends the work on quadratic MRS functions in a $2020$ paper of the authors to the case of binomial RS functions, that is sums of two quadratic MRS functions. There are also some results for the sum of any number of quadratic MRS functions.

Prescribed graphon symmetries and flavors of rigidity
We prove that an arbitrary compact metrizable group can be realized as the automorphism group of a graphing; this is a continuous analogue to Frucht's theorem recovering arbitrary finite groups are automorphism groups of finite graphs. The paper also contains a number of results the persistence of transitivity of a compact-group action upon passing to a limit of graphons. Call a compact group $\mathbb{G}$ graphon-rigid if, whenever it acts transitively on each member $Γ_n$ of a convergent sequence of graphons, it also acts transitively on the limit $\lim_n Γ$. We show that for a compact Lie group $\mathbb{G}$ graphon rigidity is equivalent to the identity component $\mathbb{G}_0$ being semisimple; as a partial converse to a result of Lovász and Szegedy, this is also equivalent to weak randomness: the property that the group have only finitely many irreducible representations in each dimension. Similarly, call a compact group $\mathbb{G}$ image-rigid if for every compact Lie group $\mathbb{H}$ the images of morphisms $\mathbb{G}\to \mathbb{H}$ form a closed set (of closed subgroups, in the natural topology). We prove that graphon rigidity implies image rigidity for compact groups that are either connected or profinite, and the two conditions are equivalent (and also equivalent to being torsion) for profinite abelian groups.
Recursive sequences attached to modular representations of finite groups

The core of a finite-dimensional modular representation $M$ of a finite group $G$ is its largest non-projective summand. We prove that the dimensions of the cores of $M^{\otimes n}$ have algebraic Hilbert series when $M$ is Omega-algebraic, in the sense that the non-projective summands of $M^{\otimes n}$ fall into finitely many orbits under the action of the syzygy operator $Ω$. Similarly, we prove that these dimension sequences are eventually linearly recursive when $M$ is what we term $Ω^{+}$-algebraic. This partially answers a conjecture by Benson and Symonds. Along the way, we also prove a number of auxiliary permanence results for linear recurrence under operations on multi-variable sequences.

Tree-optimized directed graphs

For an additive submonoid $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}$, the weight of an $\mathcal{M}$-labeled directed graph is the sum of all of its edge labels, while the content is the product of the labels. Having fixed $\mathcal{M}$ and a directed tree $E$, we prove a general result on the shape of directed $\mathcal{M}$-labeled graphs $Γ$ of weight $N\in \mathcal{M}$ maximizing the sum of the contents of all copies $E\subset Γ$. This specializes to recover a result of Hajac and Tobolski on the maximal number of length-$k$ paths in a directed acyclic graph. It also applies to prove a conjecture by the same authors on the maximal sum of entries of $A^k$ for a nilpotent $\mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}$-valued square matrix $A$ whose entries add up to $N$. Finally, we apply the same techniques to obtain the maximal number of stars with $a$ arms in a directed graph with $N$ edges.
Non-commutative groups as prescribed polytopal symmetries

We study properties of the realizations of groups as the combinatorial automorphism group of a convex polytope. We show that for any non-abelian group $G$ with a central involution there is a centrally symmetric polytope with $G$ as its combinatorial automorphisms. We show that for each integer $n$, there are groups that cannot be realized as the combinatorial automorphisms of convex polytopes of dimension at most $n$. We also give an optimal lower bound for the dimension of the realization of a group as the group of isometries that preserves a convex polytope.

Centers, cocenters and simple quantum groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the notion of a (linearly reductive) center for a linearly reductive quantum group, and show that the quotient of a such a quantum group by its center is simple whenever its fusion semiring is free in the sense of Banica and Vergnioux. We also prove that the same is true of free products of quantum groups under very mild non-degeneracy conditions. Several natural families of compact quantum groups, some with non-commutative fusion semirings and hence very "far from classical", are thus seen to be simple. Examples include quotients of free unitary groups by their centers, recovering previous work, as well as quotients of quantum reflection groups by their centers.

Free unitary groups are (almost) simple

We show that the quotients of Wang and Van Daele's universal quantum groups by their centers are simple in the sense that they have no normal quantum subgroups, thus providing the first examples of simple compact quantum groups with non-commutative fusion rings.
