Non-splitting flags, Iterated Circuits, $\underline{\mathbf σ}$-matrices and Cayley configurations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explore four approaches to the question of defectivity for a complex projective toric variety $X_A$ associated with an integral configuration $A$. The explicit tropicalization of the dual variety $X_A^\vee$ due to Dickenstein, Feichtner, and Sturmfels allows for the computation of the defect in terms of an affine combinatorial invariant $ρ(A)$. We express $ρ(A)$ in terms of affine invariants $ι(A)$ associated to Esterov's iterated circuits and $λ(A)$, an invariant defined by Curran and Cattani in terms of a Gale dual of $A$. Thus we obtain formulae for the dual defect in terms of iterated circuits and Gale duals. An alternative expression for the dual defect of $X_A$ is given by Furukawa-Ito in terms of Cayley decompositions of $A$. We give a Gale dual interpretation of these decompositions and apply it to the study of defective configurations.
Arithmetics and combinatorics of tropical Severi varieties of univariate polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a description of the tropical variety of univariate polynomials of degree n having two double roots. As a set, it is given as the union of three types of maximal cones of dimension n-1, where only cones of two of these types are cones of the secondary fan of {0,...,n}. Through Kapranov's theorem, this goal is achieved by a careful study of the possible valuations of the elementary symmetric functions of the roots of a polynomial with two double root. Despite its apparent simplicity, the computation of the tropical Severi variety has both combinatorial and arithmetic ingredients.
Mixed Discriminants
Published • View PublicationBIB
The mixed discriminant of n Laurent polynomials in n variables is the irreducible polynomial in the coefficients which vanishes whenever two of the roots coincide. The Cayley trick expresses the mixed discriminant as an A-discriminant. We show that the degree of the mixed discriminant is a piecewise linear function in the Plucker coordinates of a mixed Grassmannian. An explicit degree formula is given for the case of plane curves.

Higher order duality and toric embeddings
Published • View PublicationBIB
The notion of higher order dual varieties of a projective variety is a natural generalization of the classical notion of projective duality, introduced by Piene in 1983. In this paper we study higher order dual varieties of projective toric embeddings. We compute the degree of the second dual variety of a smooth toric threefold in geometric and combinatorial terms, and we classify smooth 2-jet spanned projective embeddings of smooth threefolds whose second dual variety has dimension less than expected. We also describe the tropicalization of the k-th dual variety of an equivariantly embedded (not necessarily normal) toric variety.

A relation between number of integral points, volumes of faces and degree of the discriminant of smooth lattice polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a formula for the degree of the discriminant of a smooth projective toric variety associated to a lattice polytope P, in terms of the number of integral points in the interior of dilates of faces of dimension greater or equal than $\lceil \frac {\dim P} 2 \rceil$.

Singular tropical hypersurfaces

We study the notion of singular tropical hypersurfaces of any dimension. We characterize the singular points in terms of tropical Euler derivatives and we give an algorithm to compute all singular points. We also describe non-transversal intersection points of planar tropical curves.
Nilsson solutions for irregular A-hypergeometric systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the solutions of irregular A-hypergeometric systems that are constructed from Gröbner degenerations with respect to generic positive weight vectors. These are formal logarithmic Puiseux series that belong to explicitly described Nilsson rings, and are therefore called (formal) Nilsson series. When the weight vector is a perturbation of (1,...,1), these series converge and provide a basis for the (multivalued) holomorphic hypergeometric functions in a specific open subset of complex n-space. Our results are more explicit when the parameters are generic or when the solutions studied are logarithm-free. We also give an alternative proof of a result of Schulze and Walther that inhomogeneous A-hypergeometric systems have irregular singularities.

Independent Sets from an Algebraic Perspective
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the basic problem of counting independent sets in a graph and, in particular, the problem of counting antichains in a finite poset, from an algebraic perspective. We show that neither independence polynomials of bipartite Cohen-Macaulay graphs nor Hilbert series of initial ideals of radical zero-dimensional complete intersections ideals, can be evaluated in polynomial time, unless #P=P. Moreover, we present a family of radical zero-dimensional complete intersection ideals J_P associated to a finite poset P, for which we describe a universal Gröbner basis. This implies that the bottleneck in computing the dimension of the quotient by J_P (that is, the number of zeros of J_P) using Gröbner methods lies in the description of the standard monomials.

A Simple Combinatorial Criterion for Projective Toric Manifolds with Dual Defect
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that any smooth lattice polytope P with codegree greater or equal than (dim(P)+3)/2 (or equivalently, with degree smaller than dim(P)/2), defines a dual defective projective toric manifold. This implies that P is Q-normal (in the terminology of a recent paper by Di Rocco, Piene and the first author) and answers partially an adjunction-theoretic conjecture by Beltrametti and Sommese. Also, it follows that smooth lattice polytopes with this property are precisely strict Cayley polytopes, which completes the answer of a question of Batyrev and the second author in the nonsingular case.
The structure of bivariate rational hypergeometric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe the structure of all codimension-two lattice configurations $A$ which admit a stable rational $A$-hypergeometric function, that is a rational function $F$ all whose partial derivatives are non zero, and which is a solution of the $A$-hypergeometric system of partial differential equations defined by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. We show, moreover, that all stable rational $A$-hypergeometric functions may be described by toric residues and apply our results to study the rationality of bivariate series whose coefficients are quotients of factorials of linear forms.

Additive Edge Labelings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G=(V,E) be a graph and d a positive integer. We study the following problem: for which labelings f_E: E \to Z_d is there a labeling f_V:V \to Z_d such that f_E(i,j) = f_V(i) + f_V(j) (mod d), for every edge (i,j) in E? We also explore the connections of the equivalent multiplicative version to toric ideals. We derive a polynomial algorithm to answer these questions and to obtain all possible solutions.

Classifying smooth lattice polytopes via toric fibrations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define Q-normal lattice polytopes. Natural examples of such polytopes are Cayley sums of strictly combinatorially equivalent lattice polytopes, which correspond to particularly nice toric fibrations, namely toric projective bundles. In a recent paper Batyrev and Nill have suggested that there should be a bound, N(d), such that every lattice polytope of degree d and dimension at least N(d) decomposes as a Cayley sum. We give a sharp answer to this question for smooth Q-normal polytopes. We show that any smooth Q-normal lattice polytope P of dimension n and degree d is a Cayley sum of strictly combinatorially equivalent polytopes if n is greater than or equal to 2d+1. The proof relies on the study of the nef value morphism associated to the corresponding toric embedding.
Self-dual projective toric varieties

Let T be a torus over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0, and consider a projective T-module P(V). We determine when a projective toric subvariety X of P(V) is self-dual, in terms of the configuration of weights of V.
Combinatorics of binomial primary decomposition
Published • View PublicationBIB
An explicit lattice point realization is provided for the primary components of an arbitrary binomial ideal in characteristic zero. This decomposition is derived from a characteristic-free combinatorial description of certain primary components of binomial ideals in affine semigroup rings, namely those that are associated to faces of the semigroup. These results are intimately connected to hypergeometric differential equations in several variables.
Binomial D-modules
Published in Duke Math. J. 151, no. 3 (2010), 385-429 • View PublicationBIB
We study quotients of the Weyl algebra by left ideals whose generators consist of an arbitrary Z^d-graded binomial ideal I along with Euler operators defined by the grading and a parameter in C^d. We determine the parameters for which these D-modules (i) are holonomic (equivalently, regular holonomic, when I is standard-graded); (ii) decompose as direct sums indexed by the primary components of I; and (iii) have holonomic rank greater than the generic rank. In each of these three cases, the parameters in question are precisely those outside of a certain explicitly described affine subspace arrangement in C^d. In the special case of Horn hypergeometric D-modules, when I is a lattice basis ideal, we furthermore compute the generic holonomic rank combinatorially and write down a basis of solutions in terms of associated A-hypergeometric functions. This study relies fundamentally on the explicit lattice point description of the primary components of an arbitrary binomial ideal in characteristic zero, which we derive in our companion article arxiv:0803.3846.

Counting Solutions to Binomial Complete Intersections
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of counting the total number of affine solutions of a system of n binomials in n variables over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show that we may decide in polynomial time if that number is finite. We give a combinatorial formula for computing the total number of affine solutions (with or without multiplicity) from which we deduce that this counting problem is #P-complete. We discuss special cases in which this formula may be computed in polynomial time; in particular, this is true for generic exponent vectors.
Tropical Discriminants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tropical geometry is used to develop a new approach to the theory of discriminants and resultants in the sense of Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. The tropical A-discriminant, which is the tropicalization of the dual variety of the projective toric variety given by an integer matrix A, is shown to coincide with the Minkowski sum of the row space of A and of the tropicalization of the kernel of A. This leads to an explicit positive formula for the extreme monomials of any A-discriminant, without any smoothness assumption.

Balanced Configurations of Lattice Vectors and GKZ-rational Toric Fourfolds in P^6
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a notion of balanced configurations of vectors. This is motivated by the study of rational A-hypergeometric functions in the sense of Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. We classify balanced configurations of seven plane vectors up to GL(2,R) equivalence and deduce that the only gkz-rational toric four-folds in complex projective space P^6 are those varieties associated with an essential Cayley configuration. In this case, we study a suitable hyperplane arrangement and show that all rational A-hypergeometric functions may be described in terms of toric residues.

Elimination Theory in Codimension Two

New formulas are given for Chow forms, discriminants and resultants arising from (not necessarily normal) toric varieties of codimension 2. Exact descriptions are also given for the secondary polygon and for the Newton polygon of the discriminant.
Binomial Residues
Published • View PublicationBIB
A binomial residue is a rational function defined by a hypergeometric integral whose kernel is singular along binomial divisors. Binomial residues provide an integral representation for rational solutions of A-hypergeometric systems of Lawrence type. The space of binomial residues of a given degree, modulo those which are polynomial in some variable, has dimension equal to the Euler characteristic of the matroid associated with A.
