A Leray model for the Orlik-Solomon algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a combinatorial generalization of the Leray models for hyperplane arrangement complements. Given a matroid and some combinatorial blowup data, we give a presentation for a bigraded (commutative) differential-graded algebra. If the matroid is realizable over $\mathbb{C}$, this is the familiar Morgan model for a hyperplane arrangement complement, embedded in a blowup of projective space. In general, we obtain a cdga that interpolates between the Chow ring of a matroid and the Orlik-Solomon algebra. Our construction can also be expressed in terms of sheaves on combinatorial blowups of geometric lattices. As a key technical device, we construct a monomial basis via a Gröbner basis for the ideal of relations. Combining these ingredients, we show that our algebra is quasi-isomorphic to the classical Orlik-Solomon algebra of the matroid.
Tropical Discriminants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tropical geometry is used to develop a new approach to the theory of discriminants and resultants in the sense of Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. The tropical A-discriminant, which is the tropicalization of the dual variety of the projective toric variety given by an integer matrix A, is shown to coincide with the Minkowski sum of the row space of A and of the tropicalization of the kernel of A. This leads to an explicit positive formula for the extreme monomials of any A-discriminant, without any smoothness assumption.

Formality of the complements of subspace arrangements with geometric lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that, for an arrangement of subspaces in a complex vector space with geometric intersection lattice, the complement of the arrangement is formal. We prove that the Morgan rational model for such an arrangement complement is formal as a differential graded algebra.

Matroid polytopes, nested sets and Bergman fans
The tropical variety defined by linear equations with constant coefficients is the Bergman fan of the corresponding matroid. Building on a self-contained introduction to matroid polytopes, we present a geometric construction of the Bergman fan, and we discuss its relationship with the simplicial complex of nested sets in the lattice of flats. The Bergman complex is triangulated by the nested set complex, and the two complexes coincide if and only if every connected flat remains connected after contracting along any subflat. This sharpens a result of Ardila-Klivans who showed that the Bergman complex is triangulated by the order complex of the lattice of flats. The nested sets specify the De Concini-Procesi compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, while the Bergman fan specifies the tropical compactification. These two compactifications are almost equal, and we highlight the subtle differences.

Complexes of trees and nested set complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit an identity of abstract simplicial complexes between the well-studied complex of trees and the reduced minimal nested set complex of the partition lattice. We conclude that the order complex of the partition lattice can be obtained from the complex of trees by a sequence of stellar subdivisions. We provide an explicit cohomology basis for the complex of trees that emerges naturally from this context. Motivated by these results, we review the generalization of complexes of trees to complexes of $k$-trees by Hanlon, and we propose yet another, in the context of nested set complexes more natural, generalization.

De Concini-Procesi wonderful arrangement models - A discrete geometer's point of view
Published • View PublicationBIB
This expository article outlines the construction of De Concini-Procesi arrangement models and describes recent progress in understanding their significance from the algebraic, geometric, and combinatorial point of view. Throughout the exposition, a strong emphasis is given to combinatorial and discrete geometric data that lies at the core of the construction.

On the topology of nested set complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Nested set complexes appear as the combinatorial core of De Concini-Procesi arrangement models. We show that nested set complexes are homotopy equivalent to the order complexes of the underlying meet-semilattices without their minimal elements. For atomic semilattices, we consider the realization of nested set complexes by simplicial fans as proposed in math.AG/0305142 by the first author and S. Yuzvinsky. We show that in this case the nested set complexes in fact are homeomorphic to the mentioned order complexes.

Incidence combinatorics of resolutions
Published in Selecta Mathematica 10 (2004), 37-60 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce notions of combinatorial blowups, building sets, and nested sets for arbitrary meet-semilattices. This gives a common abstract framework for the incidence combinatorics occurring in the context of De Concini-Procesi models of subspace arrangements and resolutions of singularities in toric varieties. Our main theorem states that a sequence of combinatorial blowups, prescribed by a building set in linear extension compatible order, gives the face poset of the corresponding simplicial complex of nested sets. As applications we trace the incidence combinatorics through every step of the De Concini-Procesi model construction, and we introduce the notions of building sets and nested sets to the context of toric varieties. There are several other instances, such as models of stratified manifolds and certain graded algebras associated with finite lattices, where our combinatorial framework has been put to work; we present an outline in the end of this paper.

Chow rings of toric varieties defined by atomic lattices

We study a graded algebra D=D(L,G) defined by a finite lattice L and a subset G in L, a so-called building set. This algebra is a generalization of the cohomology algebras of hyperplane arrangement compactifications found in work of De Concini and Procesi. Our main result is a representation of D, for an arbitrary atomic lattice L, as the Chow ring of a smooth toric variety that we construct from L and G. We describe this variety both by its fan and geometrically by a series of blowups and orbit removal. Also we find a Groebner basis of the relation ideal of D and a monomial basis of D over Z.

Abelianizing the real permutation action via blowups
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 2003, no. 32 (2003), 1755-1784 • Search Publication
We present an abelianization of the permutation action of the symmetric group S_n on R^n in analogy to the Batyrev abelianization construction for finite group actions on complex manifolds. The abelianization is provided by a particular De Concini-Procesi wonderful model for the braid arrangement. In fact, we show a stronger result, namely that stabilizers of points in the arrangement model are isomorphic to direct products of Z_2. To prove that, we develop a combinatorial framework for explicitly describing the stabilizers in terms of automorphism groups of set diagrams over families of cubes. We observe that the natural nested set stratification on the arrangement model is not stabilizer distinguishing with respect to the S_n-action, that is, stabilizers of points are not in general isomorphic on open strata. Motivated by this structural deficiency, we furnish a new stratification of the De Concini-Procesi arrangement model that distinguishes stabilizers.
