Degeneracy: From Graphs to Matroids
A graph is $k$-degenerate if every subgraph has a vertex of degree at most $k$. We extend this notion to matroids, defining a loopless matroid $M$ to be $k$-degenerate if every restriction of $M$ contains a cocircuit of size at most $k$; $M$ is minimally $k$-degenerate if it has cogirth $k$ and every proper restriction of $M$ has cogirth at most $k-1$. Our main result characterizes extremal minimally $k$-degenerate matroids. We also extend the known arboricity bound for matroids, showing that $k$-degenerate matroids have arboricity at most $k$ and providing sharper bounds.

Planar-Toroidal Decomposition of $K_{12}$
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, 28 2 (2026) #3 • View PublicationBIB
In 1978, Anderson and White asked whether there is a decomposition of $K_{12}$ into two graphs, one planar and one toroidal. Using theoretical arguments and a computer search of all maximal planar graphs of order 12, we show that no such decomposition exists. We further show that if $G$ is planar of order 12 and $H\subseteq\overline{G}$ is toroidal, then $H$ has at least two fewer edges than $\overline{G}$. A computer search found all 123 unique pairs $\left(G,H\right)$ that make this an equality.

Plane Triangulations Without Spanning 2-Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 2-tree is a graph that can be formed by starting with a triangle and iterating the operation of making a new vertex adjacent to two adjacent vertices of the existing graph. Leizhen Cai asked in 1995 whether every maximal planar graph contains a spanning 2-tree. We answer this question in the negative by constructing an infinite class of maximal planar graphs that have no spanning 2-tree.

Wiener indices of maximal $k$-degenerate graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is maximal $k$-degenerate if each induced subgraph has a vertex of degree at most $k$ and adding any new edge to the graph violates this condition. In this paper, we provide sharp lower and upper bounds on Wiener indices of maximal $k$-degenerate graphs of order $n \ge k \ge 1$. A graph is chordal if every induced cycle in the graph is a triangle and chordal maximal $k$-degenerate graphs of order $n \ge k$ are $k$-trees. For $k$-trees of order $n \ge 2k+2$, we characterize all extremal graphs for the upper bound.
