On the finite group whose proper enhanced power graph is claw-free
Let $G$ be a finite group. The \emph{enhanced power graph} of $G$, denoted by $\mathcal{E}(G)$, is the graph with vertex set $G$ in which two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent if and only if there exists an element $w \in G$ such that both $u$ and $v$ belong to $\langle w \rangle$. The \emph{proper enhanced power graph} of $G$, denoted by $\mathcal{E}^{**}(G)$, is the subgraph of $\mathcal{E}(G)$ induced by the non-dominating vertices. The main objective of this paper is to investigate finite groups whose proper enhanced power graph is claw-free, that is, contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to the complete bipartite graph $K_{1,3}$. We first prove that $\mathcal{E}(G)$ is claw-free if and only if $G$ is cyclic. The set of dominating vertices of $\mathcal{E}(G)$ forms a cyclic subgroup of the center of $G$, namely the \emph{cyclicizer} $\cyc(G)$ of $G$. This allows us to give a precise description of the structure of $G/\cyc(G)$ when $\mathcal{E}^{**}(G)$ is claw-free. If $G$ is solvable but not nilpotent, then $G$ is metacyclic, or $G/\cyc(G)$ is either a Frobenius group or a $2$-Frobenius group. If $G$ is non-solvable, then $G/\cyc(G)$ is isomorphic to $\PSL(2,q)$ or $\PGL(2,q),$ and this allows us to give a complete classification of the non-solvable groups whose proper enhanced power graph is claw-free.

On the diameter of Engel graphs
Given a finite group $G$, the Engel graph of $G$ is a directed graph $Γ(G)$ encoding pairs of elements satisfying some Engel word. Namely, $Γ(G)$ is the directed graph, where the vertices are the non-hypercentral elements of $G$ and where there is an arc from $x$ to $y$ if and only if $[x,_ n y] = 1$ for some $n \in \mathbb{N}$. From previous work, it is known that, except for a few exceptions, $Γ(G)$ is strongly connected. In this paper, we give an absolute upper bound on the diameter of $Γ(G)$, when $Γ(G)$ is strongly connected.

The Engel graph of almost simple groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite group $G$, the Engel graph of $G$ is a directed graph encoding pairs of elements satisfying some Engel word. From the work of Detomi, Lucchini and Nemmi, the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of an arbitrary group $G$ is reduced to the understanding of the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of non-abelian simple groups. In this paper, we investigate the strongly connectivity of the Engel graph of finite non-abelian simple groups.

Hypermaps over non-abelian simple groups and strongly symmetric generating sets

A generating pair $x, y$ for a group $G$ is said to be \textbf{\textit{symmetric}} if there exists an automorphism $\varphi_{x,y}$ of $G$ inverting both $x$ and $y$, that is, $x^{\varphi_{x,y}}=x^{-1}$ and $y^{\varphi_{x,y}}=y^{-1}$. Similarly, a group $G$ is said to be \textbf{\textit{strongly symmetric}} if $G$ can be generated with two elements and if all generating pairs of $G$ are symmetric. In this paper we classify the finite strongly symmetric non-abelian simple groups. Combinatorially, these are the finite non-abelian simple groups $G$ such that every orientably regular hypermap with monodromy group $G$ is reflexible.
Primitive permutation IBIS groups

Let $G$ be a finite permutation group on $Ω$. An ordered sequence of elements of $Ω$, $(ω_1,\dots, ω_t)$, is an irredundant base for $G$ if the pointwise stabilizer $G_{(ω_1,\dots, ω_t)}$ is trivial and no point is fixed by the stabilizer of its predecessors. If all irredundant bases of $G$ have the same size we say that $G$ is an IBIS group. In this paper we show that if a primitive permutation group is IBIS, then it must be almost simple, of affine-type, or of diagonal type. Moreover we prove that a diagonal-type primitive permutation groups is IBIS if and only if it is isomorphic to $PSL(2,2^f)\times PSL(2,2^f)$ for some $f\geq 2,$ in its diagonal action of degree $2^f(2^{2f}-1).$

A subexponential bound on the cardinality of abelian quotients in finite transitive groups
Published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We show that, for every transitive group $G$ of degree $n\ge 2$, the largest abelian quotient of $G$ has cardinality at most $4^{n/\sqrt{\log_2 n}}$. This gives a positive answer to a 1989 outstanding question of László Kovács and Cheryl Praeger.
Bounding the maximal size of independent generating sets of finite groups

Denote by $m(G)$ the largest size of a minimal generating set of a finite group $G$. We estimate $m(G)$ in terms of $\sum_{p\in π(G)}d_p(G),$ where we are denoting by $d_p(G)$ the minimal number of generators of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and by $π(G)$ the set of prime numbers dividing the order of $G$.
A polynomial bound for the number of maximal systems of imprimitivity of a finite transitive permutation group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that, there exists a constant $a$ such that, for every subgroup $H$ of a finite group $G$, the number of maximal subgroups of $G$ containing $H$ is bounded above by $a|G:H|^{3/2}$. In particular, a transitive permutation group of degree $n$ has at most $an^{3/2}$ maximal systems of imprimitivity. When $G$ is soluble, generalizing a classic result of Tim Wall, we prove a much stroger bound, that is, the number of maximal subgroups of $G$ containing $H$ is at most $|G:H|-1$.
