Structure of 2-step nilpotent ergodic averages for distinct-degree polynomials
We investigate manifestations of the Nilpotent Heuristic, which posits that recurrence and convergence phenomena known for measure-preserving $\mathbb{Z}^D$-systems extend to nilpotent group actions. Our main results establish seminorm estimates and limiting formulas for multiple ergodic averages arising from actions of 2-step nilpotent groups. In particular, if $T_1,\ldots,T_\ell$ are totally ergodic and generate a 2-step nilpotent group, then \[ \lim_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N T_1^n f_1 \cdots T_\ell^{n^\ell}f_\ell = \prod_{j=1}^{\ell}\int f_j\,dμ\] in the $L^{2}$ norm for all bounded functions $f_{1},\dots,f_{\ell}$; the same holds for any distinct-degree polynomial iterates. We also obtain popular-common-difference versions of the polynomial Szemeédi theorem in the same setting. In a different direction, our approach allows us to completely resolve the joint ergodicity conjecture for multidimensional polynomials and $\mathbb Z^D$-systems; we also present an example showing that, surprisingly enough, the 2-step nilpotent analog fails. We conclude with many open problems concerning joint ergodicity, seminorm estimates, and the structure theory of nilpotent systems.
Seminorm estimates and joint ergodicity for pairwise independent Hardy sequences
We develop a robust structure theory for multiple ergodic averages of commuting transformations along Hardy sequences of polynomial growth. We then apply it to derive a number of novel results on joint ergodicity, recurrence and convergence. In particular, we prove joint ergodicity for (a) pairwise independent Hardy sequences and weakly mixing transformations, (b) strongly independent Hardy sequences and ergodic transformations, (c) strongly irrationally independent Hardy sequences and totally ergodic transformations. We use these joint ergodicity results to provide new recurrence results for multidimensional patterns along strongly independent Hardy sequences, showing for instance that all subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ of positive upper density contain patterns of the form
$$ (m_1, m_2),\; (m_1 + \lfloor n^{\sqrt{2}}\rfloor, m_2),\; (m_1, m_2 + \lfloor n^{\sqrt{2}} + n^{1/2}\rfloor).$$
Last but not least, we positively resolve the joint ergodicity classification problem for pairwise independent Hardy sequences, of which the aforementioned families are special cases.
While building on recent technical advances (e.g. PET coefficient tracking schemes and joint ergodicity criteria), our work introduces a number of technical developments of its own. We construct a suitable generalization of Host-Kra and box seminorms that quantitatively control ergodic averages along Hardy sequences.
We subsequently use them to obtain Host-Kra seminorm estimates for averages along all pairwise independent Hardy sequences. Furthermore, we develop an ergodic version of the quantitative concatenation argument that has recently found extensive use in combinatorics, number theory and harmonic analysis. Lastly, we obtain new simultaneous Taylor approximations for Hardy sequences, a crucial ingredient to deal with the aforementioned classes of Hardy sequences.
Ergodic averages for sparse sequences along primes
We investigate the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages along sparse sequences evaluated at prime numbers. Our sequences arise from smooth and well-behaved functions that have polynomial growth. Central to this topic is a comparison result between standard Cesáro averages along positive integers and averages weighted by the (modified) von Mangoldt function. The main ingredients are a recent result of Matomäki, Shao, Tao and Teräväinen on the Gowers uniformity of the latter function in short intervals, a lifting argument that allows one to pass from actions of integers to flows, a simultaneous (variable) polynomial approximation in appropriate short intervals, and some quantitative equidistribution results for the former polynomials. We derive numerous applications in multiple recurrence, additive combinatorics, and equidistribution in nilmanifolds along primes. In particular, we deduce that any set of positive density contains arithmetic progressions with step $\lfloor p^c \rfloor$, where $c$ is a positive non-integer and $p$ denotes a prime, establishing a conjecture of Frantzikinakis.

Katznelson's Question is a long-standing open question concerning recurrence in topological dynamics with strong historical and mathematical ties to open problems in combinatorics and harmonic analysis. In this article, we give a positive answer to Katznelson's Question for certain towers of skew product extensions of equicontinuous systems, including systems of the form $(x,t) \mapsto (x + α, t + h(x))$. We describe which frequencies must be controlled for in order to ensure recurrence in such systems, and we derive combinatorial corollaries concerning the difference sets of syndetic subsets of the natural numbers.

In this paper we study multiple ergodic averages for "good" variable polynomials. In particular, under an additional assumption, we show that these averages converge to the expected limit, making progress related to an open problem posted by Frantzikinakis (Problem 10, "Some open problems on multiple ergodic averages. Bulletin of the Hellenic Mathematical Society. 60 (2016), 41-90"). Corresponding averages along prime numbers are studied too. These general convergence results imply various variable extensions of classical recurrence, combinatorial and number theoretical results which are presented as well.

Following an approach presented by N. Frantzikinakis, B. Host and B. Kra, we show that the parameters in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for closest integer polynomials have non-empty intersection with the set of shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$ (or similarly of $\mathbb{P}+1$). Using the Furstenberg Correspondence Principle, we show this result by recasting it as a polynomial multiple recurrence result in measure ergodic theory. Furthermore, we obtain integer part polynomial convergence results by the same method, which is a transference principle that enables one to deduce results for $\mathbb{Z}$-actions from results for flows. We also give some applications of our approach on Gowers uniform sets.
Density theorems for rational numbers
Introducing the notion of a rational system of measure preserving transformations and proving a recurrence result for such systems, we give sufficient conditions in order a subset of rational numbers to contain arbitrary long arithmetic progressions.
Ramsey theory for p-quasicyclic groups with a view towards topological dynamics
We prove additive and multiplicative partition theorems, obtaining combinatorial results for p-quasicyclic groups, where p is a prime number. We also get density results for p-quasicyclic groups via left Følner sequences of non-empty finite subsets of it, giving a sufficient condition in order a subset of a p-quasicyclic group to contain arbitrary long arithmetic progressions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a dynamical system over p-quasicyclic groups extending the classical notion of a topological dynamical system and we prove (multiple) recurrent results for the p-quasicyclic groups. In particular, we prove recurrent results analogous to Furstenberg-Weiss type theorems for classical systems.

Ramsey theory for words over a finite alphabet was unified in the work of Carlson and Furstenberg-Katznelson. Carlson, in the same work, outlined a method to extend the theory for words over an infinite alphabet, but subject to a fixed dominating principle, proving in particular an Ellentuck version, and a corresponding Ramsey theorem for k=1. In the present work we develop in a systematic way a Ramsey theory for words (in fact for ω-Z*-located words) over a doubly infinite alphabet extending Carlson's approach (to countable ordinals and Schreier-type families), and we apply this theory, exploiting the Budak-Isik-Pym representation, to obtain a partition theory for the set of rational numbers. Furthermore, we show that the theory can be used to obtain partition theorems for arbitrary semigroups, stronger than known ones.
