Cover numbers by graph families bounded by certain graph parameters
The cover number of a graph by a graph class $\mathcal P$ is the least number of $\mathcal P$-graphs necessary to cover its edges. A classical theorem of Harary, Hsu and Miller gives an exact formula for the cover number by the class of graphs with chromatic number at most $k$. We investigate analogous questions for the case of the fractional chromatic number $χ_f$ and the local chromatic number $ψ$. We prove that an analogous formula cannot hold in the case of the cover number by graphs of fractional chromatic number at most $β$, and find a lower and an upper bound, that gives rise to interesting asymptotic questions. We also investigate this cover number for small specific graphs. In the case of the cover number by graphs with local chromatic number at most $k$, we find an upper bound in terms of $ψ$, and a lower bound in terms of $ω$.

Domination and packing in graphs
The dominating number $γ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum size of a vertex set whose closed neighborhoods cover all vertices of $G$, while the packing number $ρ(G)$ is the maximum size of a vertex set whose closed neighborhoods are pairwise disjoint. In this paper we investigate graph classes $\mathcal{G}$ for which the ratio $γ(G)/ρ(G)$ is bounded by a constant $c_{\mathcal{G}}$ for every $G \in \mathcal{G}$. Our main result is an improved upper bound on this ratio for planar graphs. We also extend the list of graph classes admitting a bounded ratio by showing this for chordal bipartite graphs and for homogeneously orderable graphs. In addition, we provide a simple, direct proof for trees.
On graph classes with constant domination-packing ratio
The dominating number $γ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum size of a vertex set whose closed neighborhood covers all the vertices of the graph. The packing number $ρ(G)$ of $G$ is the maximum size of a vertex set whose closed neighborhoods are pairwise disjoint. In this paper we study graph classes ${\cal G}$ such that $γ(G)/ρ(G)$ is bounded by a constant $c_{\cal G}$ for each $G\in {\cal G}$. We propose an inductive proof technique to prove that if $\cal G$ is the class of $2$-degenerate graphs, then there is such a constant bound $c_{\cal G}$. We note that this is the first monotone, dense graph class that is shown to have constant ratio. We also show that the classes of AT-free and unit-disk graphs have bounded ratio. In addition, our technique gives improved bounds on $c_{\cal G}$ for planar graphs, graphs of bounded treewidth or bounded twin-width. Finally, we provide some new examples of graph classes where the ratio is unbounded.

Winding number and circular 4-coloring of signed graphs
Concerning the recent notion of circular chromatic number of signed graphs, for each given integer $k$ we introduce two signed bipartite graphs, each on $2k^2-k+1$ vertices, having shortest negative cycle of length $2k$, and the circular chromatic number 4. Each of the construction can be viewed as a bipartite analogue of the generalized Mycielski graphs on odd cycles, $M_{\ell}(C_{2k+1})$. In the course of proving our result, we also obtain a simple proof of the fact that $M_{\ell}(C_{2k+1})$ and some similar quadrangulations of the projective plane have circular chromatic number 4. These proofs have the advantage that they illuminate, in an elementary manner, the strong relation between algebraic topology and graph coloring problems.

Critical subgraphs of Schrijver graphs for the fractional chromatic number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schrijver graphs are vertex-color-critical subgraphs of Kneser graphs having the same chromatic number. They also share the value of their fractional chromatic number but Schrijver graphs are not critical for that. Here we present an induced subgraph of every Schrijver graph that is vertex-critical with respect to the fractional chromatic number. These subgraphs turn out to be isomorphic with certain circular complete graphs. We also characterize the critical edges within this subgraph.

We investigate the maximum size of graph families on a common vertex set of cardinality $n$ such that the symmetric difference of the edge sets of any two members of the family satisfies some prescribed condition. We solve the problem completely for infinitely many values of $n$ when the prescribed condition is connectivity or $2$-connectivity, Hamiltonicity or the containment of a spanning star. We also investigate local conditions that can be certified by looking at only a subset of the vertex set. In these cases a capacity-type asymptotic invariant is defined and when the condition is to contain a certain subgraph this invariant is shown to be a simple function of the chromatic number of this required subgraph. This is proven using classical results from extremal graph theory. Several variants are considered and the paper ends with a collection of open problems.

On multichromatic numbers of widely colorable graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A coloring is called $s$-wide if no walk of length $2s-1$ connects vertices of the same color. A graph is $s$-widely colorable with $t$ colors if and only if it admits a homomorphism into a universal graph $W(s,t)$. Tardif observed that the value of the $r^{\rm th}$ multichromatic number $χ_r(W(s,t))$ of these graphs is at least $t+2(r-1)$ and equality holds for $r=s=2$. He asked whether there is equality also for $r=s=3$. We show that $χ_s(W(s,t))=t+2(s-1)$ for all $s$ thereby answering Tardif's question. We observe that for large $r$ (with respect to $s$ and $t$ fixed) we cannot have equality and that for $s$ fixed and $t$ going to infinity the fractional chromatic number of $W(s,t)$ also tends to infinity. The latter is a simple consequence of another result of Tardif on the fractional chromatic number of generalized Mycielski graphs.
