We construct a direct natural bijection between descending plane partitions without any special part and permutations. The directness is in the sense that the bijection avoids any reference to nonintersecting lattice paths. The advantage of the bijection is that it provides an interpretation for the seemingly long list of conditions needed to define descending plane partitions. Unfortunately, the bijection does not relate the number of parts of the descending plane partition with the number of inversions of the permutation as one might have expected from the conjecture of Mills, Robbins and Rumsey, although there is a simple expression for the number of inversions of a permutation in terms of the corresponding descending plane partition.

We interpret walks in the first quadrant with steps {(1,1),(1,0),(-1,0), (-1,-1)} as a generalization of Dyck words with two sets of letters. Using this language, we give a formal expression for the number of walks in the steps above beginning and ending at the origin. We give an explicit formula for a restricted class of such words using a correspondance between such words and Dyck paths. This explicit formula is exactly the same as that for the degree of the polynomial satisfied by the square of the area of cyclic n-gons conjectured by Dave Robbins although the connection is a mystery. Finally we remark on another combinatorial problem in which the same formula appears and argue for the existence of a bijection.
A bijectional attack on the Razumov-Stroganov conjecture
We attempt to prove the Razumov-Stroganov conjecture using a bijectional approach. We have been unsuccessful but we believe the techniques we present can be used to prove the conjecture.

We show that the half-perimeter generating functions for the number of Wicketed and Gated Ferrers diagrams is algebraic. Furthermore, the generating function of the Wicketed Ferrers diagrams is closely related to the generating function of the Catalan numbers. The methodology of the experimentation as well as the proof is the umbral transfer matrix method.

We present general algorithms (fully implemented in Maple) for calculations of various quantities related to constrained directed walks for a general set of steps on the square lattice in two dimensions. As a special case, we rederive results of earlier works.

We show that the generating function (in n) for the number of walks on the square lattice with steps (1,1), (1,-1), (2,2) and (2,-2) from (0,0) to (2n,0) in the region 0 <= y <= w satisfies a very special fifth order nonlinear recurrence relation in w that implies both its numerator and denominator satisfy a linear recurrence relation.
Towards The Moduli Space of Extended Partial Isometries
Partial Isometries are important constructs that help give nontrivial solutions once a simple solution is known. We generalize this notion to Extended Partial Isometries and include operators which have right inverses but no left inverses (or vice versa). We find a large class of such operators and conjecture the moduli space to be the Hilbert Scheme of Points. Further, we apply this technique to find instanton solutions of a noncommutative N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory in six dimensions and show that this construction yields nontrivial solutions for other noncommutative gauge theories. The analysis is done in one complex dimension and the generalization of the result to higher dimensions is shown.
