GOE fluctuations for the maximum of the top path in alternating sign matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
The six-vertex model is an important toy-model in statistical mechanics for two-dimensional ice with a natural parameter $Δ$. When $Δ= 0$, the so-called free-fermion point, the model is in natural correspondence with domino tilings of the Aztec diamond. Although this model is integrable for all $Δ$, there has been very little progress in understanding its statistics in the scaling limit for other values. In this work, we focus on the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions at $Δ= 1/2$, where it corresponds to alternating sign matrices (ASMs). We consider the level lines in a height function representation of ASMs. We show that the maximum of the topmost level line for a uniformly random ASMs has the GOE Tracy--Widom distribution after appropriate rescaling. A key ingredient in our proof is Zeilberger's proof of the ASM conjecture. As far as we know, this is the first edge fluctuation result away from the tangency points for the domain-wall six-vertex model when we are not in the free fermion case.

Toppling on permutations with an extra chip
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Vol 28 no. 4, (2021), P4.18 • View PublicationBIB
The study of toppling on permutations with an extra labeled chip was initiated by the first author with D. Hathcock and P. Tetali (arXiv:2010.11236), where the extra chip was added in the middle. We extend this to all possible locations $p$ as well as values $r$ of the extra chip and give a complete characterization of permutations which topple to the identity. Further, we classify all permutations which are outcomes of the toppling process in this generality, which we call resultant permutations. Resultant permutations turn out to be certain decomposable permutations. The number of configurations toppling to a given resultant permutation is shown to depend purely on the number of left-to-right maxima (or records) of the permutation to the left of $n-p$ and the number of right-to-left minima to the right of $n-p$. The number of permutations toppling to a given resultant permutation (identity or otherwise) is shown to be the binomial transform of a poly-Bernoulli number of type B.

Combinatorics of a disordered two-species ASEP on a torus
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 103 (2022) 103511, 20pp • View PublicationBIB
We define a new disordered asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with two species of particles, first-class particles labelled $\bullet$ and second-class particles labelled ${\scriptstyle \Box}$, on a two-dimensional toroidal lattice. The dynamics is controlled by particles labelled $\bullet$, which only move horizontally, with forward and backward hopping rates $p_i$ and $q_i$ respectively if the $\bullet$ is on row $i$. The motion of particles labelled ${\scriptstyle \Box}$ depends on the relative position of these with respect to $\bullet$'s, and can be both horizontal and vertical. We show that the stationary weight of any configuration is proportional to a monomial in the $p_i$'s and $q_i$'s. Our process projects to the disordered ASEP on a ring, and so explains combinatorially the stationary distribution of the latter first derived by Evans (Europhysics Letters, 1996). We compute the partition function, as well as densities and currents of $\bullet$'s and ${\scriptstyle \Box}$'s in the stationary state. We observe a novel mechanism we call the Scott Russell phenomenon: the current of ${\scriptstyle \Box}$'s in the vertical direction is the same as that of $\bullet$'s in the horizontal direction.

Correlations in totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions
Published in Transactions of the London Mathematical Society, Vol 8 no. 1, 493--526, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPPs) are boxed plane partitions with the maximum possible symmetry. We use the well-known representation of TSSCPPs as a dimer model on a honeycomb graph enclosed in one-twelfth of a hexagon with free boundary to express them as perfect matchings of a family of non-bipartite planar graphs. Our main result is that the edges of the TSSCPPs form a Pfaffian point process, for which we give explicit formulas for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix. Preliminary analysis of these correlations are then used to give a precise conjecture for the limit shape of TSSCPPs in the scaling limit.

Modified Macdonald polynomials and the multispecies zero range process: I
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 6, issue 1 (2023), p. 243-284 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove a new combinatorial formula for the modified Macdonald polynomials $\widetilde{H}_λ(X;q,t)$, motivated by connections to the theory of interacting particle systems from statistical mechanics. The formula involves a new statistic called queue inversions on fillings of tableaux. This statistic is closely related to the multiline queues which were recently used to give a formula for the Macdonald polynomials $P_λ(X;q,t)$. In the case $q=1$ and $X=(1,1,\dots,1)$, that formula had also been shown to compute stationary probabilities for a particle system known as the multispecies ASEP on a ring, and it is natural to ask whether a similar connection exists between the modified Macdonald polynomials and a suitable statistical mechanics model. In a sequel to this work, we demonstrate such a connection, showing that the stationary probabilities of the multispecies totally asymmetric zero-range process (mTAZRP) on a ring can be computed using tableaux formulas with the queue inversion statistic. This connection extends to arbitrary $X=(x_1,\dots, x_n)$; the $x_i$ play the role of site-dependent jump rates for the mTAZRP.

Toppleable Permutations, Excedances and Acyclic Orientations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recall that an excedance of a permutation $π$ is any position $i$ such that $π_i > i$. Inspired by the work of Hopkins, McConville and Propp (Elec. J. Comb., 2017) on sorting using toppling, we say that a permutation is toppleable if it gets sorted by a certain sequence of toppling moves. One of our main results is that the number of toppleable permutations on $n$ letters is the same as those for which excedances happen exactly at $\{1,\dots, \lfloor (n-1)/2 \rfloor\}$. Additionally, we show that the above is also the number of acyclic orientations with unique sink (AUSOs) of the complete bipartite graph $K_{\lceil n/2 \rceil, \lfloor n/2 \rfloor + 1}$. We also give a formula for the number of AUSOs of complete multipartite graphs. We conclude with observations on an extremal question of Cameron et al. concerning maximizers of (the number of) acyclic orientations, given a prescribed number of vertices and edges for the graph.

Limiting directions for random walks in classical affine Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $W$ be a finite Weyl group and $\widetilde W$ the corresponding affine Weyl group. A random element of $\widetilde W$ can be obtained as a reduced random walk on the alcoves of $\widetilde W$. By a theorem of Lam (Ann. Prob. 2015), such a walk almost surely approaches one of $|W|$ many directions. We compute these directions when $W$ is $B_n$, $C_n$ and $D_n$ and the random walk is weighted by Kac and dual Kac labels. This settles Lam's questions for types $B$ and $C$ in the affirmative and for type $D$ in the negative. The main tool is a combinatorial two row model for a totally asymmetric simple exclusion process called the $D^*$-TASEP, with four parameters. By specializing the parameters in different ways, we obtain TASEPs for each of the Weyl groups mentioned above. Computing certain correlations in these TASEPs gives the desired limiting directions.

A simple symmetric exclusion process driven by an asymmetric tracer particle
Published in Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincare D, 10 no. 4, (2023) 687--713 • View PublicationBIB
We consider an exclusion process on a periodic one-dimensional lattice where all particles perform simple symmetric exclusion at rate $1$ except for a single tracer particle, which performs partially simple asymmetric exclusion with rate $p$ to the right and rate $q$ to the left. This model was first considered by Ferrari, Goldstein and Lebowitz (Progr. Phys., 1985) as a test for the validity of the Einstein relation in microscopic systems. The main thrust of this work is an exact solution for the steady state of this exclusion process. We show that the stationary probabilities factorize and give an exact formula for the nonequilibrium partition function. Perhaps surprisingly, we find that the nonequilibrium free energy in the steady state is not well-defined for this system in the thermodynamic limit for any values of $p$ and $q$ if $p \neq q$. We provide formulas for the current and two-point correlations. When the tracer particle performs asymmetric exclusion ($q=0$), the results are shown to simplify significantly and we find an unexpected connection with the combinatorics of set partitions. Finally, we study the system from the point of view of the tracer particle, the so-called environment process. In the environment process, we show that the density of particles decays exponentially with the scaled position in front of the tracer particle in the thermodynamic limit.

The size of $t$-cores and hook lengths of random cells in random partitions
Published in Annals of Applied Probability (2023), Vol. 33, No. 1, 85-106 • View PublicationBIB
Fix $t \geq 2$. We first give an asymptotic formula for certain sums of the number of $t$-cores. We then use this result to compute the distribution of the size of the $t$-core of a uniformly random partition of an integer $n$. We show that this converges weakly to a gamma distribution after dividing by $\sqrt{n}$. As a consequence, we find that the size of the $t$-core is of the order of $\sqrt{n}$ in expectation. We then apply this result to show that the probability that $t$ divides the hook length of a uniformly random cell in a uniformly random partition equals $1/t$ in the limit. Finally, we extend this result to all modulo classes of $t$ using abacus representations for cores and quotients.

Bijective proofs of skew Schur polynomial factorizations
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A Volume 174, August 2020, 105241, 40pp • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Ayyer and Behrend present for a wide class of partitions factorizations of Schur polynomials with an even number of variables where half of the variables are the reciprocals of the others into symplectic and/or orthogonal group characters, thereby generalizing results of Ciucu and Krattenthaler for rectangular shapes. Their proofs proceed by manipulations of determinants underlying the characters. The purpose of the current paper is to provide bijective proofs of such factorizations. The quantities involved have known combinatorial interpretations in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns of various types or half Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, which can in turn be transformed into perfect matchings of weighted trapezoidal honeycomb graphs. An important ingredient is then Ciucu's theorem for graphs with reflective symmetry. However, before being able to apply it, we need to employ a certain averaging procedure in order to achieve symmetric edge weights. This procedure is based on a "randomized" bijection, which can however also be turned into a classical bijection. For one type of Schur polynomial factorization, we also need an additional graph operation that almost doubles the underlying graph. Finally, our combinatorial proofs reveal that the factorizations under consideration can in fact also be generalized to skew shapes as discussed at the end of the paper.

The exact phase diagram for a semipermeable TASEP with nonlocal boundary jumps
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 52 (2019) 355001 (19pp) • View PublicationBIB
We consider a finite one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with four types of particles, $\{1,0,\bar{1},*\}$, in contact with reservoirs. Particles of species $0$ can neither enter nor exit the lattice, and those of species $*$ are constrained to lie at the first and last site. Particles of species $1$ enter from the left reservoir into either the first or second site, move rightwards, and leave from either the last or penultimate site. Conversely, particles of species $\bar{1}$ enter from the right reservoir into either the last or penultimate site, move leftwards, and leave from either the first or last site. This dynamics is motivated by a natural random walk on the Weyl group of type D. We compute the exact nonequilibrium steady state distribution using a matrix ansatz building on earlier work of Arita. We then give explicit formulas for the nonequilibrium partition function as well as densities and currents of all species in the steady state, and derive the phase diagram.
Macdonald trees and determinants of representations for finite Coxeter groups
Published in Indian J. Discrete Math., Vol. 5, No. 1 (2019), pp. 1-22 • Search Publication
Every irreducible odd dimensional representation of the $n$'th symmetric or hyperoctahedral group, when restricted to the $(n-1)$'th, has a unique irreducible odd-dimensional constituent. Furthermore, the subgraph induced by odd-dimensional representations in the Bratteli diagram of symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups is a binary tree with a simple recursive description. We survey the description of this tree, known as the Macdonald tree, for symmetric groups, from our earlier work. We describe analogous results for hyperoctahedral groups. A partition $λ$ of $n$ is said to be chiral if the corresponding irreducible representation $V_λ$ of $S_n$ has non-trivial determinant. We review our previous results on the structure and enumeration of chiral partitions, and subsequent extension to all Coxeter groups by Ghosh and Spallone. Finally we show that the numbers of odd and chiral partitions track each other closely.

Factorization theorems for classical group characters, with applications to alternating sign matrices and plane partitions
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 165 (2019) 78-105 • View PublicationBIB
We show that, for a certain class of partitions and an even number of variables of which half are reciprocals of the other half, Schur polynomials can be factorized into products of odd and even orthogonal characters. We also obtain related factorizations involving sums of two Schur polynomials, and certain odd-sized sets of variables. Our results generalize the factorization identities proved by Ciucu and Krattenthaler (Advances in combinatorial mathematics, 39-59, 2009) for partitions of rectangular shape. We observe that if, in some of the results, the partitions are taken to have rectangular or double-staircase shapes and all of the variables are set to 1, then factorization identities for numbers of certain plane partitions, alternating sign matrices and related combinatorial objects are obtained.
Extensions of partial cyclic orders and consecutive coordinate polytopes
Published in Ann. Henri Lebesgue, 3, 275-297, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce several classes of polytopes contained in $[0,1]^n$ and cut out by inequalities involving sums of consecutive coordinates. We show that the normalized volumes of these polytopes enumerate circular extensions of certain partial cyclic orders. Among other things this gives a new point of view on a question popularized by Stanley. We also provide a combinatorial interpretation of the Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials of some of these polytopes in terms of descents of total cyclic orders. The Euler numbers, the Eulerian numbers and the Narayana numbers appear as special cases.

The number of inversions of permutations with fixed shape
Published in Journal of Enumerative Combinatorics, Vol. 2 no. 4, (2022) S4PP1, 14pp • View PublicationBIB
The Robinson-Schensted correspondence can be viewed as a map from permutations to partitions. In this work, we study the number of inversions of permutations corresponding to a fixed partition $λ$ under this map. Hohlweg characterized permutations having shape $λ$ with the minimum number of inversions. Here, we give the first results in this direction for higher numbers of inversions. We give explicit conjectures for both the structure and the number of permutations associated to $λ$ where the extra number of inversions is less than the length of the smallest column of $λ$. We prove the result when $λ$ has two columns.

The Hilbert-Galton board
Published in ALEA - Latin American Journal of Probability and Mathematical Statistics, 15(2), 755-774, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the Hilbert-Galton board as a variant of the classical Galton board. Balls fall into a row of bins at a rate depending on the bin, and at random times, each bin gets shifted one unit to the right and an empty bin is added to the left. We compute the stationary distribution of this Markov chain and show the existence of an enriched Markov chain on triangular arrays of numbers which projects down to the Hilbert-Galton board. We also define finite-ball projections of the Hilbert-Galton board, for which we compute the stationary distribution, the full spectrum and the grand coupling time.

Random walks on rings and modules
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3 (2020) no. 2, pp. 309-329 • View PublicationBIB
We consider two natural models of random walks on a module $V$ over a finite commutative ring $R$ driven simultaneously by addition of random elements in $V$, and multiplication by random elements in $R$. In the coin-toss walk, either one of the two operations is performed depending on the flip of a coin. In the affine walk, random elements $a \in R,b \in V$ are sampled independently, and the current state $x$ is taken to $ax+b$. For both models, we obtain the complete spectrum of the transition matrix from the representation theory of the monoid of all affine maps on $V$ under a suitable hypothesis on the measure on $V$ (the measure on $R$ can be arbitrary).

Reverse juggling processes

Knutson introduced two families of reverse juggling Markov chains (single and multispecies) motivated by the study of random semi-infinite matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We present natural generalizations of both chains by placing generic weights that still lead to simple combinatorial expressions for the stationary distribution. For permutations, this is a seemingly new multivariate generalization of the inversion polynomial.

Extreme diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices of odd order
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 367 (2020) 107125, 56pp • View PublicationBIB
For each $α\in \{0,1,-1 \}$, we count diagonally and antidiagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DASASMs) of fixed odd order with a maximal number of $α$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal, as well as DASASMs of fixed odd order with a minimal number of $0$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal. In these enumerations, we encounter product formulas that have previously appeared in plane partition or alternating sign matrix counting, namely for the number of all alternating sign matrices, the number of cyclically symmetric plane partitions in a given box, and the number of vertically and horizontally symmetric ASMs. We also prove several refinements. For instance, in the case of DASASMs with a maximal number of $-1$'s along the diagonal and the antidiagonal, these considerations lead naturally to the definition of alternating sign triangles. These are new objects that are equinumerous with ASMs, and we are able to prove a two parameter refinement of this fact, involving the number of $-1$'s and the inversion number on the ASM side. To prove our results, we extend techniques to deal with triangular six-vertex configurations that have recently successfully been applied to settle Robbins' conjecture on the number of all DASASMs of odd order. Importantly, we use a general solution of the reflection equation to prove the symmetry of the partition function in the spectral parameters. In all of our cases, we derive determinant or Pfaffian formulas for the partition functions, which we then specialize in order to obtain the product formulas for the various classes of extreme odd DASASMs under consideration.

The exact phase diagram for a class of multispecies asymmetric exclusion processes
Published in Scientific Reports 7, Article number: 13555 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
The asymmetric exclusion process is an idealised stochastic model of transport, whose exact solution has given important insight into a general theory of nonequilibrium statistical physics. In this work, we consider a totally asymmetric exclusion process with multiple species of particles on a one-dimensional lattice in contact with reservoirs. We derive the exact nonequilibrium phase diagram for the system in the long time limit. We find two new phenomena in certain regions of the phase diagram: when the density of a species becomes zero throughout the system, and dynamical localisation when the density of a species is nonzero only within an interval far from the boundaries. We give a complete explanation of the macroscopic features of the phase diagram using what we call nested fat shocks.
