Bipartizing fullerenes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A fullerene graph is a cubic bridgeless planar graph with twelve 5-faces such that all other faces are 6-faces. We show that any fullerene graph on n vertices can be bipartized by removing O(sqrt{n}) edges. This bound is asymptotically optimal.

Packing Chromatic Number of Distance Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that vertices of $G$ can be partitioned into disjoint classes $X_1, ..., X_k$ where vertices in $X_i$ have pairwise distance greater than $i$. We study the packing chromatic number of infinite distance graphs $G(Z, D)$, i.e. graphs with the set $Z$ of integers as vertex set and in which two distinct vertices $i, j \in Z$ are adjacent if and only if $|i - j| \in D$. In this paper we focus on distance graphs with $D = \{1, t\}$. We improve some results of Togni who initiated the study. It is shown that $χ_ρ(G(Z, D)) \leq 35$ for sufficiently large odd $t$ and $χ_ρ(G(Z, D)) \leq 56$ for sufficiently large even $t$. We also give a lower bound 12 for $t \geq 9$ and tighten several gaps for $χ_ρ(G(Z, D))$ with small $t$.
Graphs with two crossings are 5-choosable

A graph G is k-choosable if G can be properly colored whenever every vertex has a list of at least k available colors. Thomassen's theorem states that every planar graph is 5-choosable. We extend the result by showing that every graph with at most two crossings is 5-choosable.
The Planar Slope Number of Planar Partial 3-Trees of Bounded Degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that every planar graph has a planar embedding where edges are represented by non-crossing straight-line segments. We study the planar slope number, i.e., the minimum number of distinct edge-slopes in such a drawing of a planar graph with maximum degree $Δ$. We show that the planar slope number of every planar partial 3-tree and also every plane partial 3-tree is at most $O(Δ^5)$. In particular, we answer the question of Dujmović et al. [Computational Geometry 38 (3), pp. 194--212 (2007)] whether there is a function $f$ such that plane maximal outerplanar graphs can be drawn using at most $f(Δ)$ slopes.
Short Cycle Covers of Cubic Graphs and Graphs with Minimum Degree Three
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 24 (2010) 330-355 • View PublicationBIB
The Shortest Cycle Cover Conjecture of Alon and Tarsi asserts that the edges of every bridgeless graph with $m$ edges can be covered by cycles of total length at most $7m/5=1.400m$. We show that every cubic bridgeless graph has a cycle cover of total length at most $34m/21\approx 1.619m$ and every bridgeless graph with minimum degree three has a cycle cover of total length at most $44m/27\approx 1.630m$.
