A long standing open problem in extremal graph theory is to describe all graphs that maximize the number of induced copies of a path on four vertices. The character of the problem changes in the setting of oriented graphs, and becomes more tractable. Here we resolve this problem in the setting of oriented graphs without transitive triangles.

A facial unique-maximum coloring of a plane graph is a proper coloring of the vertices using positive integers such that each face has a unique vertex that receives the maximum color in that face. Fabrici and Göring (2016) proposed a strengthening of the Four Color Theorem conjecturing that all plane graphs have a facial unique-maximum coloring using four colors. This conjecture has been disproven for general plane graphs and it was shown that five colors suffice. In this paper we show that plane graphs, where vertices of degree at least four induce a star forest, are facially unique-maximum 4-colorable. This improves a previous result for subcubic plane graphs by Andova, Lidický, Lužar, and Škrekovski (2018). We conclude the paper by proposing some problems.

Alon, Bohman, Holzman and Kleitman proved that any partition of a $d$-dimensional discrete box into proper sub-boxes must consist of at least $2^d$ sub-boxes. Recently, Leader, Milićević and Tan considered the question of how many odd-sized proper boxes are needed to partition a $d$-dimensional box of odd size, and they asked whether the trivial construction consisting of $3^d$ boxes is best possible. We show that approximately $2.93^d$ boxes are enough, and consider some natural generalisations.

Motivated by the work of Razborov about the minimal density of triangles in graphs we study the minimal density of the 5-cycle $C_5$. We show that every graph of order $n$ and size $\left( 1-\frac{1}{k}\right)\binom{n}{2}$, where $k\ge 3$ is an integer, contains at least \[ \left( \frac{1}{10} -\frac{1}{2k} + \frac{1}{k^2} - \frac{1}{k^3} + \frac{2}{5 k^4} \right)n^5 +o(n^5) \] copies of $C_5$. This bound is optimal, since a matching upper bound is given by the balanced complete $k$-partite graph. The proof is based on the flag algebras framework. We also provide a stability result. An SDP solver is not necessary to verify our proofs.

For all $n\ge 9$, we show that the only triangle-free graphs on $n$ vertices maximizing the number $5$-cycles are balanced blow-ups of a 5-cycle. This completely resolves a conjecture by Erdős, and extends results by Grzesik and Hatami, Hladký, Král', Norin and Razborov, where they independently showed this same result for large $n$ and for all $n$ divisible by $5$.

A packing $k$-coloring for some integer $k$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a mapping
$\varphi:V\to\{1,\ldots,k\}$ such that any two vertices $u, v$ of color $\varphi(u)=\varphi(v)$ are in distance at least $\varphi(u)+1$. This concept is motivated by frequency assignment problems. The \emph{packing chromatic number} of $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that there exists a packing $k$-coloring of $G$.
Fiala and Golovach showed that determining the packing chromatic number for chordal graphs is \NP-complete for diameter exactly 5. While the problem is easy to solve for diameter 2, we show \NP-completeness for any diameter at least 3. Our reduction also shows that the packing chromatic number is hard to approximate within $n^{{1/2}-\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$.
In addition, we design an \FPT algorithm for interval graphs of bounded diameter. This leads us to exploring the problem of finding a partial coloring that maximizes the number of colored vertices.
Closing in on Hill's conjecture

Borrowing László Székely's lively expression, we show that Hill's conjecture is "asymptotically at least 98.5% true". This long-standing conjecture states that the crossing number cr($K_n$) of the complete graph $K_n$ is $H(n) := \frac{1}{4}\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor \lfloor\frac{n-3}{2}\rfloor$, for all $n\ge 3$. This has been verified only for $n\le 12$. Using flag algebras, Norin and Zwols obtained the best known asymptotic lower bound for the crossing number of complete bipartite graphs, from which it follows that for every sufficiently large $n$, cr$(K_n) > 0.905\, H(n)$. Also using flag algebras, we prove that asymptotically cr$(K_n)$ is at least $0.985\, H(n)$. We also show that the spherical geodesic crossing number of $K_n$ is asymptotically at least $0.996\, H(n)$.

We prove the following 30-year old conjecture of Győri and Tuza: the edges of every $n$-vertex graph $G$ can be decomposed into complete graphs $C_1,\ldots,C_\ell$ of orders two and three such that $|C_1|+\cdots+|C_\ell|\le (1/2+o(1))n^2$. This result implies the asymptotic version of the old result of Erdős, Goodman and Pósa that asserts the existence of such a decomposition with $\ell\le n^2/4$.

Given a triangle-free planar graph G and a 9-cycle C in G, we characterize situations where a 3-coloring of C does not extend to a proper 3-coloring of G. This extends previous results when C is a cycle of length at most 8.
A counterexample to a conjecture on facial unique-maximal colorings

A facial unique-maximum coloring of a plane graph is a proper vertex coloring by natural numbers where on each face $α$ the maximal color appears exactly once on the vertices of $α$. Fabrici and Göring proved that six colors are enough for any plane graph and conjectured that four colors suffice. This conjecture is a strengthening of the Four Color theorem. Wendland later decreased the upper bound from six to five. In this note, we disprove the conjecture by giving an infinite family of counterexamples. Thus we conclude that facial unique-maximum chromatic number of the sphere is five.

A facial unique-maximum coloring of a plane graph is a vertex coloring where on each face $α$ the maximal color appears exactly once on the vertices of $α$. If the coloring is required to be proper, then the upper bound for the minimal number of colors required for such a coloring is set to $5$. Fabrici and Göring [Fabrici and Goring 2016] even conjectured that $4$ colors always suffice. Confirming the conjecture would hence give a considerable strengthening of the Four Color Theorem. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture holds for subcubic plane graphs, outerplane graphs and plane quadrangulations. Additionally, we consider the facial edge-coloring analogue of the aforementioned coloring and prove that every $2$-connected plane graph admits such a coloring with at most $4$ colors.

Finding exact Ramsey numbers is a problem typically restricted to relatively small graphs. The flag algebra method was developed to find asymptotic results for very large graphs, so it seems that the method is not suitable for finding small Ramsey numbers. But this intuition is wrong, and we will develop a technique to do just that in this paper.
We find new upper bounds for many small graph and hypergraph Ramsey numbers. As a result, we prove the exact values $R(K_4^-,K_4^-,K_4^-)=28$, $R(K_8,C_5)= 29$, $R(K_9,C_6)= 41$, $R(Q_3,Q_3)=13$, $R(K_{3,5},K_{1,6})=17$, $R(C_3, C_5, C_5)= 17$, and $R(K_4^-,K_5^-;3)= 12$.
We hope that this technique will be adapted to address other questions for smaller graphs with the flag algebra method.

We show that for any set $S\subseteq \mathbb{Z}$, $|S|=4$ there exists a 3-coloring of $\mathbb{Z}$ in which every translate of $S$ receives all three colors. This implies that $S$ has a codensity of at most $1/3$, proving a conjecture of Newman [D. J. Newman, Complements of finite sets of integers, Michigan Math. J. 14 (1967) 481--486]. We also consider related questions in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$.

If G is a graph and H is a set of subgraphs of G, then an edge-coloring of G is called H-polychromatic if every graph from H gets all colors present in G on its edges. The H-polychromatic number of G, denoted poly_H(G), is the largest number of colors in an H-polychromatic coloring. In this paper, poly_H(G) is determined exactly when G is a complete graph and H is the family of all 1-factors. In addition poly_H(G) is found up to an additive constant term when G is a complete graph and H is the family of all 2-factors, or the family of all Hamiltonian cycles.
Injective choosability of subcubic planar graphs with girth 6

An injective coloring of a graph $G$ is an assignment of colors to the vertices of $G$ so that any two vertices with a common neighbor have distinct colors. A graph $G$ is injectively $k$-choosable if for any list assignment $L$, where $|L(v)| \geq k$ for all $v \in V(G)$, $G$ has an injective $L$-coloring. Injective colorings have applications in the theory of error-correcting codes and are closely related to other notions of colorability. In this paper, we show that subcubic planar graphs with girth at least 6 are injectively 5-choosable. This strengthens a result of Lužar, Škrekovski, and Tancer that subcubic planar graphs with girth at least 7 are injectively 5-colorable. Our result also improves several other results in particular cases.
Ore and Chvátal-type Degree Conditions for Bootstrap Percolation from Small Sets

Bootstrap percolation is a deterministic cellular automaton in which vertices of a graph~$G$ begin in one of two states, "dormant" or "active". Given a fixed integer $r$, a dormant vertex becomes active if at any stage it has at least $r$ active neighbors, and it remains active for the duration of the process. Given an initial set of active vertices $A$, we say that $G$ $r$-percolates (from $A$) if every vertex in $G$ becomes active after some number of steps. Let $m(G,r)$ denote the minimum size of a set $A$ such that $G$ $r$-percolates from $A$.
Bootstrap percolation has been studied in a number of settings, and has applications to both statistical physics and discrete epidemiology. Here, we are concerned with degree-based density conditions that ensure $m(G,2)=2$. In particular, we give an Ore-type degree sum result that states that if a graph $G$ satisfies $σ_2(G)\ge n-2$, then either $m(G,2)=2$ or $G$ is in one of a small number of classes of exceptional graphs. We also give a Chvátal-type degree condition: If $G$ is a graph with degree sequence $d_1\le d_2\le\dots\le d_n$ such that $d_i \geq i+1$ or $d_{n-i} \geq n-i-1$ for all $1 \leq i < \frac{n}{2}$, then $m(G,2)=2$ or $G$ falls into one of several specific exceptional classes of graphs. Both of these results are inspired by, and extend, an Ore-type result in [D. Freund, M. Poloczek, and D. Reichman, Contagious sets in dense graphs, to appear in European J. Combin.]

By Brook's Theorem, every n-vertex graph of maximum degree at most Delta >= 3 and clique number at most Delta is Delta-colorable, and thus it has an independent set of size at least n/Delta. We give an approximate characterization of graphs with independence number close to this bound, and use it to show that the problem of deciding whether such a graph has an indepdendent set of size at least n/Delta+k has a kernel of size O(k).
Polychromatic Colorings on the Hypercube

Given a subgraph G of the hypercube Q_n, a coloring of the edges of Q_n such that every embedding of G contains an edge of every color is called a G-polychromatic coloring. The maximum number of colors with which it is possible to G-polychromatically color the edges of any hypercube is called the polychromatic number of G. To determine polychromatic numbers, it is only necessary to consider a structured class of colorings, which we call simple. The main tool for finding upper bounds on polychromatic numbers is to translate the question of polychromatically coloring the hypercube so every embedding of a graph G contains every color into a question of coloring the 2-dimensional grid so that every so-called shape sequence corresponding to G contains every color. After surveying the tools for finding polychromatic numbers, we apply these techniques to find polychromatic numbers of a class of graphs called punctured hypercubes. We also consider the problem of finding polychromatic numbers in the setting where larger subcubes of the hypercube are colored. We exhibit two new constructions which show that this problem is not a straightforward generalization of the edge coloring problem.
(4,2)-choosability of planar graphs with forbidden structures

All planar graphs are 4-colorable and 5-choosable, while some planar graphs are not 4-choosable. Determining which properties guarantee that a planar graph can be colored using lists of size four has received significant attention. In terms of constraining the structure of the graph, for any $\ell \in \{3,4,5,6,7\}$, a planar graph is 4-choosable if it is $\ell$-cycle-free. In terms of constraining the list assignment, one refinement of $k$-choosability is choosability with separation. A graph is $(k,s)$-choosable if the graph is colorable from lists of size $k$ where adjacent vertices have at most $s$ common colors in their lists. Every planar graph is $(4,1)$-choosable, but there exist planar graphs that are not $(4,3)$-choosable. It is an open question whether planar graphs are always $(4,2)$-choosable. A chorded $\ell$-cycle is an $\ell$-cycle with one additional edge. We demonstrate for each $\ell \in \{5,6,7\}$ that a planar graph is $(4,2)$-choosable if it does not contain chorded $\ell$-cycles.

The strong chromatic index of a graph $G$, denoted $χ_s'(G)$, is the least number of colors needed to edge-color $G$ so that edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. The strong list chromatic index, denoted $χ_{s,\ell}'(G)$, is the least integer $k$ such that if arbitrary lists of size $k$ are assigned to each edge then $G$ can be edge-colored from those lists where edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. We use the discharging method, the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, and computation to show that if $G$ is a subcubic planar graph with $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 41$ then $χ_{s,\ell}'(G) \leq 5$, answering a question of Borodin and Ivanova [Precise upper bound for the strong edge chromatic number of sparse planar graphs, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory, 33(4), (2014) 759--770]. We further show that if $G$ is a subcubic planar graph and $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 30$, then $χ_s'(G) \leq 5$, improving a bound from the same paper. Finally, if $G$ is a planar graph with maximum degree at most four and $\operatorname{girth}(G) \geq 28$, then $χ_s'(G) \leq 7$, improving a more general bound of Wang and Zhao from [Odd graphs and its application on the strong edge coloring, arXiv:1412.8358] in this case.
