Complete colorings of planar graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics-2019 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the achromatic and the pseudoachromatic numbers of planar and outerplanar graphs as well as planar graphs of girth 4 and graphs embedded on a surface. We give asymptotically tight results and lower bounds for maximal embedded graphs.

The 4-girth-thickness of the complete graph
Published in Ars Mathematica Contemporanea-2018 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we define the $4$-girth-thickness $θ(4,G)$ of a graph $G$ as the minimum number of planar subgraphs of girth at least $4$ whose union is $G$. We obtain the $4$-girth-thickness of the arbitrary complete graph $K_n$ getting that $θ(4,K_n)=\left\lceil \frac{n+2}{4}\right\rceil$ for $n\not=6,10$ and $θ(4,K_6)=3$.

The Hadwiger number, chordal graphs and $ab$-perfection
Published in AKCE International Journal of Graphs and Combinatorics-2017 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is chordal if every induced cycle has three vertices. The Hadwiger number is the order of the largest complete minor of a graph. We characterize the chordal graphs in terms of the Hadwiger number and we also characterize the families of graphs such that for each induced subgraph $H$, (1) the Hadwiger number of $H$ is equal to the maximum clique order of $H$, (2) the Hadwiger number of $H$ is equal to the achromatic number of $H$, (3) the $b$-chromatic number is equal to the pseudoachromatic number, (4) the pseudo-$b$-chromatic number is equal to the pseudoachromatic number, (5) the Hadwiger number of $H$ is equal to the Grundy number of $H$, and (6) the $b$-chromatic number is equal to the pseudo-Grundy number.
Coloring decompositions of complete geometric graphs
Published in Acta Mathematica Hungarica-2019 • View PublicationBIB
A decomposition of a non-empty simple graph $G$ is a pair $[G,P]$, such that $P$ is a set of non-empty induced subgraphs of $G$, and every edge of $G$ belongs to exactly one subgraph in $P$. The chromatic index $χ'([G,P])$ of a decomposition $[G,P]$ is the smallest number $k$ for which there exists a $k$-coloring of the elements of $P$ in such a way that: for every element of $P$ all of its edges have the same color, and if two members of $P$ share at least one vertex, then they have different colors. A long standing conjecture of Erdős-Faber-Lovász states that every decomposition $[K_n,P]$ of the complete graph $K_n$ satisfies $χ'([K_n,P])\leq n$. In this paper we work with geometric graphs, and inspired by this formulation of the conjecture, we introduce the concept of chromatic index of a decomposition of the complete geometric graph. We present bounds for the chromatic index of several types of decompositions when the vertices of the graph are in general position. We also consider the particular case in which the vertices are in convex position and present bounds for the chromatic index of a few types of decompositions.
On two-quotient strong starters for $\mathbb{F}_q$
Published in Utilitas Mathematica-2019 • Search Publication
Let $G$ be a finite additive abelian group of odd order $n$, and let $G^*=G\setminus\{0\}$ be the set of non-zero elements. A starter for $G$ is a set $S=\{\{x_i,y_i\}:i=1,\ldots,\frac{n-1}{2}\}$ such that $\{x_1,\ldots,x_\frac{n-1}{2},y_1,\ldots,y_\frac{n-1}{2}\}=G^*$ and $\{\pm(x_i-y_i):i=1,\ldots,\frac{n-1}{2}\}=G^*$. Moreover, if $\left|\left\{x_i+y_i:i=1,\ldots,\frac{n-1}{2}\right\}\right|=\frac{n-1}{2}$, then $S$ is called a strong starter for $G$. A starter $S$ for $G$ is a $k$ quotient starter if there exists $Q\subseteq G^*$ of cardinality $k$ such that $y_i/x_i\in Q$ or $x_i/y_i\in Q$, for $i=1,\ldots,\frac{n-1}{2}$. In this paper, we give examples of two-quotient strong starters for $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $q=2^kt+1$ is a prime power with $k>1$ a positive integer and $t$ an odd integer greater than 1.
A note on the Erdös-Faber-Lovász Conjecture: quasigroups and complete digraphs
Published in Ars Combinatoria-2019 • Search Publication
A decomposition of a simple graph $G$ is a pair $(G,P)$ where $P$ is a set of subgraphs of $G$, which partitions the edges of $G$ in the sense that every edge of $G$ belongs to exactly one subgraph in $P$. If the elements of $P$ are induced subgraphs then the decomposition is denoted by $[G,P]$. A $k$-$P$-coloring of a decomposition $(G,P)$ is a surjective function that assigns to the edges of $G$ a color from a $k$-set of colors, such that all edges of $H\in P$ have the same color, and, if $H_1,H_2\in P$ with $V(H_1)\cap V(H_2)\neq\emptyset$ then $E(H_1)$ and $E(H_2)$ have different colors. The \emph{chromatic index} $χ'((G,P))$ of a decomposition $(G,P)$ is the smallest number $k$ for which there exists a $k$-$P$-coloring of $(G,P)$. The well-known Erdös-Faber-Lovász Conjecture states that any decomposition $[K_n,P]$ satisfies $χ'([K_n,P])\leq n$. We use quasigroups and complete digraphs to give a new family of decompositions that satisfy the conjecture.

Some new infinite families of simple, indecomposable $m$-factorizations of the complete multigraph $λK_v$ are presented. Most of the constructions come from finite geometries.
