Generating functions for plateaus in Motzkin paths

A plateau in a Motzkin path is a sequence of three steps: an up step, a horizontal step, then a down step. We find three different forms for the bivariate generating function for plateaus in Motzkin paths, then generalize to longer plateaus. We conclude by describing a further generalization: a continued fraction form from which one can easily derive new multivariate generating functions for various kinds of path statistics. Several examples of generating functions are given using this technique.
Bijections from weighted Dyck paths to Schroeder paths

Kim and Drake used generating functions to prove that the number of 2-distant noncrossing matchings, which are in bijection with little Schroeder paths, is the same as the weight of Dyck paths in which downsteps from even height have weight 2. This work presents bijections from those Dyck paths to little Schroeder paths, and from a similar set of Dyck paths to big Schroeder paths. We show the effect of these bijections on the corresponding matchings, find generating functions for two new classes of lattice paths, and demonstrate a relationship with 231-avoiding permutations.

We show combinatorially that the higher-order matching polynomials of several families of graphs are d-orthogonal polynomials. The matching polynomial of a graph is a generating function for coverings of a graph by disjoint edges; the higher-order matching polynomial corresponds to coverings by paths. Several families of classical orthogonal polynomials -- the Chebyshev, Hermite, and Laguerre polynomials -- can be interpreted as matching polynomials of paths, cycles, complete graphs, and complete bipartite graphs. The notion of d-orthogonality is a generalization of the usual idea of orthogonality for polynomials and we use sign-reversing involutions to show that the higher-order Chebyshev (first and second kinds), Hermite, and Laguerre polynomials are d-orthogonal. We also investigate the moments and find generating functions of those polynomials.

We define and consider k-distant crossings and nestings for matchings and set partitions, which are a variation of crossings and nestings in which the distance between vertices is important. By modifying an involution of Kasraoui and Zeng (Electronic J. Combinatorics 2006, research paper 33), we show that the joint distribution of k-distant crossings and nestings is symmetric. We also study the numbers of k-distant noncrossing matchings and partitions for small k, which are counted by well-known sequences, as well as the orthogonal polynomials related to k-distant noncrossing matchings and partitions. We extend Chen et al.'s r-crossings and enhanced r-crossings.

We develop a combinatorial model of the associated Hermite polynomials and their moments, and prove their orthogonality with a sign-reversing involution. We find combinatorial interpretations of the moments as complete matchings, connected complete matchings, oscillating tableaux, and rooted maps and show weight-preserving bijections between these objects. Several identities, linearization formulas, the moment generating function, and a second combinatorial model are also derived.
