Additive Tree $O(ρ\log n)$-Spanners from Tree Breadth $ρ$
The tree breadth ${\rm tb}(G)$ of a connected graph $G$ is the smallest non-negative integer $ρ$ such that $G$ has a tree decomposition whose bags all have radius at most $ρ$. We show that, given a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ and size $m$, one can construct in time $O(m\log n)$ an additive tree $O\big({\rm tb}(G)\log n\big)$-spanner of $G$, that is, a spanning subtree $T$ of $G$ in which $d_T(u,v)\leq d_G(u,v)+O\big({\rm tb}(G)\log n\big)$ for every two vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$. This improves earlier results of Dragan and Köhler (Algorithmica 69 (2014) 884-905), who obtained a multiplicative error of the same order, and of Dragan and Abu-Ata (Theoretical Computer Science 547 (2014) 1-17), who achieved the same additive error with a collection of $O(\log n)$ trees.
Acyclic matchings in graphs of bounded maximum degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
A matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is acyclic if the subgraph of $G$ induced by the set of vertices that are incident to an edge in $M$ is a forest. We prove that every graph with $n$ vertices, maximum degree at most $Δ$, and no isolated vertex, has an acyclic matching of size at least $(1-o(1))\frac{6n}{Δ^2},$ and we explain how to find such an acyclic matching in polynomial time.

Cubic graphs with equal independence number and matching number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Caro, Davila, and Pepper (arXiv:1909.09093) recently proved $δ(G) α(G)\leq Δ(G) μ(G)$ for every graph $G$ with minimum degree $δ(G)$, maximum degree $Δ(G)$, independence number $α(G)$, and matching number $μ(G)$. Answering some problems they posed, we characterize the extremal graphs for $δ(G)<Δ(G)$ as well as for $δ(G)=Δ(G)=3$.
Domination versus edge domination
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose the conjecture that the domination number $γ(G)$ of a $Δ$-regular graph $G$ with $Δ\geq 1$ is always at most its edge domination number $γ_e(G)$, which coincides with the domination number of its line graph. We prove that $γ(G)\leq \left(1+\frac{2(Δ-1)}{Δ2^Δ}\right)γ_e(G)$ for general $Δ\geq 1$, and $γ(G)\leq \left(\frac{7}{6}-\frac{1}{204}\right)γ_e(G)$ for $Δ=3$. Furthermore, we verify our conjecture for cubic claw-free graphs.
Bounding and approximating minimum maximal matchings in regular graphs
The edge domination number $γ_e(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum size of a maximal matching in $G$. It is well known that this parameter is computationally very hard, and several approximation algorithms and heuristics have been studied. In the present paper, we provide best possible upper bounds on $γ_e(G)$ for regular and non-regular graphs $G$ in terms of their order and maximum degree. Furthermore, we discuss algorithmic consequences of our results and their constructive proofs.
Linear programming based approximation for unweighted induced matchings --- breaking the $Δ$ barrier
A matching in a graph is induced if no two of its edges are joined by an edge, and finding a large induced matching is a very hard problem. Lin et al. (Approximating weighted induced matchings, Discrete Applied Mathematics 243 (2018) 304-310) provide an approximation algorithm with ratio $Δ$ for the weighted version of the induced matching problem on graphs of maximum degree $Δ$. Their approach is based on an integer linear programming formulation whose integrality gap is at least $Δ-1$, that is, their approach offers only little room for improvement in the weighted case. For the unweighted case though, we conjecture that the integrality gap is at most $\frac{5}{8}Δ+O(1)$, and that also the approximation ratio can be improved at least to this value. We provide primal-dual approximation algorithms with ratios $(1-ε) Δ+ \frac{1}{2}$ for general $Δ$ with $ε\approx 0.02005$, and $\frac{7}{3}$ for $Δ=3$. Furthermore, we prove a best-possible bound on the fractional induced matching number in terms of the order and the maximum degree.

Uniquely restricted matchings in subcubic graphs without short cycles
A matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is uniquely restricted if no other matching in $G$ covers the same set of vertices. We prove that any connected subcubic graph with $n$ vertices and girth at least $5$ contains a uniquely restricted matching of size at least $(n-1) / 3$ except for two exceptional cubic graphs of order $14$ and $20$.

Relating broadcast independence and independence
Published • View PublicationBIB
An independent broadcast on a connected graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\to \mathbb{N}_0$ such that, for every vertex $x$ of $G$, the value $f(x)$ is at most the eccentricity of $x$ in $G$, and $f(x)>0$ implies that $f(y)=0$ for every vertex $y$ of $G$ within distance at most $f(x)$ from $x$. The broadcast independence number $α_b(G)$ of $G$ is the largest weight $\sum\limits_{x\in V(G)}f(x)$ of an independent broadcast $f$ on $G$. Clearly, $α_b(G)$ is at least the independence number $α(G)$ for every connected graph $G$. Our main result implies $α_b(G)\leq 4α(G)$. We prove a tight inequality and characterize all extremal graphs.

Girth, minimum degree, independence, and broadcast independence

It is known that $α(G)\leq α_b(G)\leq 4α(G)$ for every connected graph $G$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. If $G$ has girth $g$ and minimum degree $δ$, we show that $α_b(G)\leq 2α(G)$ provided that $g\geq 6$ and $δ\geq 3$ or that $g\geq 4$ and $δ\geq 5$. Furthermore, we show that, for every positive integer $k$, there is a connected graph $G$ of girth at least $k$ and minimum degree at least $k$ such that $α_b(G)\geq 2\left(1-\frac{1}{k}\right)α(G)$. Our results imply that lower bounds on the girth and the minimum degree of a connected graph $G$ can lower the fraction $\frac{α_b(G)}{α(G)}$ from $4$ below $2$, but not any further.

Algorithmic aspects of broadcast independence

We describe an efficient algorithm that determines the broadcast independence number of a given tree. Furthermore, we show NP-hardness of the broadcast independence number for planar graphs of maximum degree four, and hardness of approximation for general graphs. Our results solve problems posed by Dunbar, Erwin, Haynes, Hedetniemi, and Hedetniemi (2006), Hedetniemi (2006), and Ahmane, Bouchemakh, Sopena (2018).

On some tractable and hard instances for partial incentives and target set selection
Published • View PublicationBIB
A widely studied model for influence diffusion in social networks are {\it target sets}. For a graph $G$ and an integer-valued threshold function $τ$ on its vertex set, a {\it target set} or {\it dynamic monopoly} is a set of vertices of $G$ such that iteratively adding to it vertices $u$ of $G$ that have at least $τ(u)$ neighbors in it eventually yields the entire vertex set of $G$. This notion is limited to the binary choice of including a vertex in the target set or not, and Cordasco et al.~proposed {\it partial incentives} as a variant allowing for intermediate choices. We show that finding optimal partial incentives is hard for chordal graphs and planar graphs but tractable for graphs of bounded treewidth and for interval graphs with bounded thresholds. We also contribute some new results about target set seletion on planar graphs by showing the hardness of this problem, and by describing an efficient $O(\sqrt{n})$-approximation algorithm as well as a PTAS for the dual problem of finding a maximum degenerate set.

On the maximum number of maximum independent sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a very short and simple proof of Zykov's generalization of Turán's theorem, which implies that the number of maximum independent sets of a graph of order $n$ and independence number $α$ with $α<n$ is at most $\left\lceil\frac{n}α\right\rceil^{n\,{\rm mod}\,α} \left\lfloor\frac{n}α\right\rfloor^{α-(n\,{\rm mod}\,α)}$. Generalizing a result of Zito, we show that the number of maximum independent sets of a tree of order $n$ and independence number $α$ is at most $2^{n-α-1}+1$, if $2α=n$, and, $2^{n-α-1}$, if $2α>n$, and we also characterize the extremal graphs. Finally, we show that the number of maximum independent sets of a subcubic tree of order $n$ and independence number $α$ is at most $\left(\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}\right)^{2n-3α+1}$, and we provide more precise results for extremal values of $α$.
Uniquely restricted matchings in subcubic graphs
A matching $M$ in a graph $G$ is uniquely restricted if no other matching in $G$ covers the same set of vertices. We conjecture that every connected subcubic graph with $m$ edges and $b$ bridges that is distinct from $K_{3,3}$ has a uniquely restricted matching of size at least $\frac{m+b}{6}$, and we establish this bound with $b$ replaced by the number of bridges that lie on a path between two vertices of degree at most $2$. Moreover, we prove that every connected subcubic graph of order $n$ and girth at least $7$ has a uniquely restricted matching of size at least $\frac{n-1}{3}$, which partially confirms a Conjecture of Fürst and Rautenbach (Some bounds on the uniquely restricted matching number, arXiv:1803.11032).

On the maximum number of minimum total dominating sets in forests

We propose the conjecture that every tree with order $n$ at least $2$ and total domination number $γ_t$ has at most $\left(\frac{n-\frac{γ_t}{2}}{\frac{γ_t}{2}}\right)^{\frac{γ_t}{2}}$ minimum total dominating sets. As a relaxation of this conjecture, we show that every forest $F$ with order $n$, no isolated vertex, and total domination number $γ_t$ has at most $\min\left\{\left(8\sqrt{e}\, \right)^{γ_t}\left(\frac{n-\frac{γ_t}{2}}{\frac{γ_t}{2}}\right)^{\frac{γ_t}{2}}, (1+\sqrt{2})^{n-γ_t},1.4865^n\right\}$ minimum total dominating sets.
Dynamic monopolies for interval graphs with bounded thresholds

For a graph $G$ and an integer-valued threshold function $τ$ on its vertex set, a dynamic monopoly is a set of vertices of $G$ such that iteratively adding to it vertices $u$ of $G$ that have at least $τ(u)$ neighbors in it eventually yields the vertex set of $G$. We show that the problem of finding a dynamic monopoly of minimum order can be solved in polynomial time for interval graphs with bounded threshold functions, but is NP-hard for chordal graphs allowing unbounded threshold functions.
Partial immunization of trees

For a graph $G$ and an integer-valued function $τ$ on its vertex set, a dynamic monopoly is a set of vertices of $G$ such that iteratively adding to it vertices $u$ of $G$ that have at least $τ(u)$ neighbors in it eventually yields the vertex set of $G$. We study the problem of maximizing the minimum order of a dynamic monopoly by increasing the threshold values of individual vertices subject to vertex-dependent lower and upper bounds, and fixing the total increase. We solve this problem efficiently for trees, which extends a result of Khoshkhah and Zaker (On the largest dynamic monopolies of graphs with a given average threshold, Canadian Mathematical Bulletin 58 (2015) 306-316).

Vaccinate your trees!

We study two vaccination problems, where the goal is to maximize the minimum order of such a dynamic monopoly either by increasing the threshold value of $b$ vertices beyond their degree, or by removing $b$ vertices from $G$, where $b$ is a given non-negative integer corresponding to a budget. We show how to solve these problems efficiently for trees.

Approximately locating an invisible agent in a graph with relative distance queries

In a pursuit evasion game on a finite, simple, undirected, and connected graph $G$, a first player visits vertices $m_1,m_2,\ldots$ of $G$, where $m_{i+1}$ is in the closed neighborhood of $m_i$ for every $i$, and a second player probes arbitrary vertices $c_1,c_2,\ldots$ of $G$, and learns whether or not the distance between $c_{i+1}$ and $m_{i+1}$ is at most the distance between $c_i$ and $m_i$. Up to what distance $d$ can the second player determine the position of the first? For trees of bounded maximum degree and grids, we show that $d$ is bounded by a constant. We conjecture that $d=O(\log n)$ for every graph $G$ of order $n$, and show that $d=0$ if $m_{i+1}$ may differ from $m_i$ only if $i$ is a multiple of some sufficiently large integer.

Approximating Connected Safe Sets in Weighted Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$ and a non-negative integral weight function $w$ on the vertex set of $G$, a set $S$ of vertices of $G$ is $w$-safe if $w(C)\geq w(D)$ for every component $C$ of the subgraph of $G$ induced by $S$ and every component $D$ of the subgraph of $G$ induced by the complement of $S$ such that some vertex in $C$ is adjacent to some vertex of $D$. The minimum weight $w(S)$ of a $w$-safe set $S$ is the safe number $s(G,w)$ of the weighted graph $(G,w)$, and the minimum weight of a $w$-safe set that induces a connected subgraph of $G$ is its connected safe number $cs(G,w)$. Bapat et al. showed that computing $cs(G,w)$ is NP-hard even when $G$ is a star. For a given weighted tree $(T,w)$, they described an efficient $2$-approximation algorithm for $cs(T,w)$ as well as an efficient $4$-approximation algorithm for $s(T,w)$. Addressing a problem they posed, we present a PTAS for the connected safe number of a weighted tree. Our PTAS partly relies on an exact pseudopolynomial time algorithm, which also allows to derive an asymptotic FPTAS for restricted instances. Finally, we extend a bound due to Fujita et al. from trees to block graphs.
