Symmetric Graphicahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a connected graph G with p vertices and q edges, the G-graphicahedron is a vertex-transitive simple abstract polytope of rank q whose edge-graph is isomorphic to a Cayley graph of the symmetric group S_p associated with G. The paper explores combinatorial symmetry properties of G-graphicahedra, focussing in particular on transitivity properties of their automorphism groups. We present a detailed analysis of the graphicahedra for the q-star graphs K_{1,q} and the q-cycles C_q. The C_q-graphicahedron is intimately related to the geometry of the infinite Euclidean Coxeter group \tilde{A}_{q-1} and can be viewed as an edge-transitive tessellation of the (q-1)-torus by (q-1)-dimensional permutahedra, obtained as a quotient, modulo the root lattice A_{q-1}, of the Voronoi tiling for the dual root lattice A_{q-1}^* in Euclidean (q-1)-space.

Hereditary Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Every regular polytope has the remarkable property that it inherits all symmetries of each of its facets. This property distinguishes a natural class of polytopes which are called hereditary. Regular polytopes are by definition hereditary, but the other polytopes in this class are interesting, have possible applications in modeling of structures, and have not been previously investigated. This paper establishes the basic theory of hereditary polytopes, focussing on the analysis and construction of hereditary polytopes with highly symmetric faces.
Colorful Polytopes and Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper investigates connections between abstract polytopes and properly edge colored graphs. Given any finite n-edge-colored n-regular graph G, we associate to G a simple abstract polytope P_G of rank n, called the colorful polytope of G, with 1-skeleton isomorphic to G. We investigate the interplay between the geometric, combinatorial, or algebraic properties of the polytope P_G and the combinatorial or algebraic structure of the underlying graph G, focussing in particular on aspects of symmetry. Several such families of colorful polytopes are studied including examples derived from a Cayley graph, in particular the graphicahedra, as well as the flag adjacency polytopes and related monodromy polytopes associated with a given abstract polytope. The duals of certain families of colorful polytopes have been important in the topological study of colored triangulations and crystallization of manifolds.
On the Size of Equifacetted Semi-Regular Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Unlike the situation in the classical theory of convex polytopes, there is a wealth of semi-regular abstract polytopes, including interesting examples exhibiting some unexpected phenomena. We prove that even an equifacetted semi-regular abstract polytope can have an arbitrary large number of flag orbits or face orbits under its combinatorial automorphism group.

Semiregular Polytopes and Amalgamated C-groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the classical setting, a convex polytope is said to be semiregular if its facets are regular and its symmetry group is transitive on vertices. This paper studies semiregular abstract polytopes, which have abstract regular facets, still with combinatorial automorphism group transitive on vertices. We analyze the structure of the automorphism group, focusing in particular on polytopes with two kinds of regular facets occurring in an "alternating" fashion. In particular we use group amalgamations to prove that given two compatible n-polytopes P and Q, there exists a universal abstract semiregular (n+1)-polytope which is obtained by "freely" assembling alternate copies of P and Q. We also employ modular reduction techniques to construct finite semiregular polytopes from reflection groups over finite fields.
Constructions of Chiral Polytopes of Small Rank
An abstract polytope of rank n is said to be chiral if its automorphism group has precisely two orbits on the flags, such that adjacent flags belong to distinct orbits. The present paper describes a general method for deriving new finite chiral polytopes from old finite chiral polytopes of the same rank. In particular, the technique is used to construct many new examples in ranks 3, 4 and 5.

Regular Polyhedra of Index Two, I
Published • View PublicationBIB
A polyhedron in Euclidean 3-space is called a regular polyhedron of index 2 if it is combinatorially regular but "fails geometric regularity by a factor of 2"; its combinatorial automorphism group is flag-transitive but its geometric symmetry group has two flag orbits. The present paper, and its successor by the first author, describe a complete classification of regular polyhedra of index 2 in 3-space. In particular, the present paper enumerates the regular polyhedra of index 2 with vertices on two orbits under the symmetry group. The subsequent paper will enumerate the regular polyhedra of index 2 with vertices on one orbit under the symmetry group.

Combinatorial Space Tiling
The present article studies combinatorial tilings of Euclidean or spherical spaces by polytopes, serving two main purposes: first, to survey some of the main developments in combinatorial space tiling; and second, to highlight some new and some old open problems in this area.
The Graphicahedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
The paper describes a construction of abstract polytopes from Cayley graphs of symmetric groups. Given any connected graph G with p vertices and q edges, we associate with G a Cayley graph of the symmetric group S_p and then construct a vertex-transitive simple polytope of rank q, called the graphicahedron, whose 1-skeleton (edge graph) is the Cayley graph. The graphicahedron of a graph G is a generalization of the well-known permutahedron; the latter is obtained when the graph is a path. We also discuss symmetry properties of the graphicahedron and determine its structure when G is small.

Polytopes with groups of type PGL_2(q)
Published • View PublicationBIB
There exists just one regular polytope of rank larger than 3 whose full automorphism group is a projective general linear group PGL_2(q), for some prime-power q. This polytope is the 4-simplex and the corresponding group is PGL_2(5), which is isomorphic to S_5.

Regular Polygonal Complexes in Space, I
Published • View PublicationBIB
A polygonal complex in euclidean 3-space is a discrete polyhedron-like structure with finite or infinite polygons as faces and finite graphs as vertex-figures, such that a fixed number r of faces surround each edge. It is said to be regular if its symmetry group is transitive on the flags. The present paper and its successor describe a complete classification of regular polygonal complexes in 3-space. In particular, the present paper establishes basic structure results for the symmetry groups, discusses geometric and algebraic aspects of operations on their generators, characterizes the complexes with face mirrors as the 2-skeletons of the regular 4-apeirotopes in 3-space, and fully enumerates the simply flag-transitive complexes with mirror vector (1,2). The second paper will complete the enumeration.

A Local Characterization of Combinatorial Multihedrality in Tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
A locally finite face-to-face tiling of euclidean d-space by convex polytopes is called combinatorially multihedral if its combinatorial automorphism group has only finitely many orbits on the tiles. The paper describes a local characterization of combinatorially multihedral tilings in terms of centered coronas. This generalizes the Local Theorem for Monotypic Tilings, established in an earlier paper, which characterizes the case of combinatorial tile-transitivity.

Locally Toroidal Polytopes and Modular Linear Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
When the standard representation of a crystallographic Coxeter group G (with string diagram) is reduced modulo the integer d>1, one obtains a finite group G^d which is often the automorphism group of an abstract regular polytope. Building on earlier work in the case that d is an odd prime, we here develop methods to handle composite moduli and completely describe the corresponding modular polytopes when G is of spherical or Euclidean type. Using a modular variant of the quotient criterion, we then describe the locally toroidal polytopes provided by our construction, most of which are new.

Modular Reduction in Abstract Polytopes
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 52 (2009) 435-450 • View PublicationBIB
The paper studies modular reduction techniques for abstract regular and chiral polytopes, with two purposes in mind: first, to survey the literature about modular reduction in polytopes; and second, to apply modular reduction, with moduli given by primes in Z[t] (with t=τthe golden ratio), to construct new regular 4-polytopes of hyperbolic types {3,5,3} and {5,3,5} with automorphism groups given by finite orthogonal groups.

Reflection Groups and Polytopes over Finite Fields, III
Published • View PublicationBIB
When the standard representation of a crystallographic Coxeter group is reduced modulo an odd prime p, one obtains a finite group G^p acting on some orthogonal space over Z_p . If the Coxeter group has a string diagram, then G^p will often be the automorphism group of a finite abstract regular polytope. In parts I and II we established the basics of this construction and enumerated the polytopes associated to groups of rank at most 4, as well as all groups of spherical or Euclidean type. Here we extend the range of our earlier criteria for the polytopality of G^p . Building on this we investigate the class of 3-infinity groups of general rank, and then complete a survey of those locally toroidal polytopes which can be described by our construction.

Groups of type L_2(q) acting on polytopes

We prove that if G is a string C-group of rank 4 and G is isomorphic to L_2(q) with q a prime power, then q must be 11 or 19. The polytopes arising are Grunbaum's 11-cell of type {3,5,3} for L_2(11) and Coxeter's 57-cell of type {5,3,5} for L_2(19), each a locally projective regular 4-polytope.
Semisymmetric Graphs from Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Every finite, self-dual, regular (or chiral) 4-polytope of type {3,q,3} has a trivalent 3-transitive (or 2-transitive) medial layer graph. Here, by dropping self-duality, we obtain a construction for semisymmetric trivalent graphs (which are edge- but not vertex-transitive). In particular, the Gray graph arises as the medial layer graph of a certain universal locally toroidal regular 4-polytope.

Reflection groups and polytopes over finite fields, II

When the standard representation of a crystallographic Coxeter group $Γ$ is reduced modulo an odd prime $p$, a finite representation in some orthogonal space over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is obtained. If $Γ$ has a string diagram, the latter group will often be the automorphism group of a finite regular polytope. In Part I we described the basics of this construction and enumerated the polytopes associated with the groups of rank 3 and the groups of spherical or Euclidean type. In this paper, we investigate such families of polytopes for more general choices of $Γ$, including all groups of rank 4. In particular, we study in depth the interplay between their geometric properties and the algebraic structure of the corresponding finite orthogonal group.

Petrie-Coxeter Maps Revisited
This paper presents a technique for constructing new chiral or regular polyhedra (or maps) from self-dual abstract chiral polytopes of rank 4. From improperly self-dual chiral polytopes we derive "Petrie-Coxeter-type" polyhedra (abstract chiral analogues of the classical Petrie-Coxeter polyhedra) and investigate their groups of automorphisms.
