Morse theory of Bestvina-Brady type for posets and matchings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a Morse theory for posets of Bestvina-Brady type combining matchings and height functions. This theory generalizes Forman's discrete Morse theory for regular CW-complexes and extends previous results on Morse theory for $h$-regular posets to all finite posets. We also develop a relative version of Morse theory which allows us to compare the topology of a poset with that of a given subposet.

The cylinder of a relation and generalized versions of the Nerve Theorem
We introduce the notion of cylinder of a relation in the context of posets, extending the construction of the mapping cylinder. We establish a local-to-global result for relations, generalizing Quillen's Theorem A for order preserving maps, and derive novel formulations of the classical Nerve Theorem for posets and simplicial complexes, suitable for covers with not necessarily contractible intersections.
A simplicial complex is uniquely determined by its set of discrete Morse functions

We prove that a connected simplicial complex is uniquely determined by its complex of discrete Morse functions. This settles a question raised by Chari and Joswig. In the 1-dimensional case, this implies that the complex of rooted forests of a connected graph G completely determines G.

Homotopy colimits of diagrams over posets and variations on a theorem of Thomason
We use a classical result of McCord and reduction methods of finite spaces to prove a generalization of Thomason's theorem on homotopy colimits over posets. In particular this allows us to characterize the homotopy colimits of diagrams of simplicial complexes in terms of the Grothendieck construction on the diagrams of their face posets. We also derive analogues of well known results on homotopy colimits in the combinatorial setting, including a cofinality theorem and a generalization of Quillen's Theorem A for posets.
A generalization of a result of Dong and Santos-Sturmfels on the Alexander dual of spheres and balls
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a generalization of a result by Dong and Santos-Sturmfels about the homotopy type of the Alexander dual of balls and spheres. Our results involve NH-manifolds, which were recently introduced as the non-homogeneous (or non-pure) counterpart of classical polyhedral manifolds. We show that the Alexander dual of an NH-ball is contractible and the Alexander dual of an NH-sphere is homotopy equivalent to a sphere. We also prove that NH-balls and NH-spheres arise naturally as the double duals of standard balls and spheres.

$G$-colorings of posets, coverings and presentations of the fundamental group
We introduce the notion of a coloring of a poset, which consists of a labeling of the edges in its Hasse diagram by elements in a given group $G$. We use $G$-colorings to describe the covering maps of posets and present a new method based on colorings to obtain concrete and simple presentations of the fundamental group of polyhedra.
A note on the homotopy type of the Alexander dual
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the homotopy type of the Alexander dual of a simplicial complex. In general the homotopy type of K does not determine the homotopy type of its dual K*. Moreover, one can construct for each finitely presented group G, a simply connected simplicial complex K with fundamental group isomorphic to G. We study sufficient conditions on K for K* to have the homotopy type of a sphere. We also extend the simplicial Alexander duality to the context of reduced lattices.

Some remarks on Morse theory for posets, homological Morse theory and finite manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a version of discrete Morse theory for posets. This theory studies the topology of the order complexes K(X) of h-regular posets X from the critical points of admissible matchings on X. Our approach is related to R. Forman's discrete Morse theory for CW-complexes and generalizes Forman and Chari's results on the face posets of regular CW-complexes. We also introduce a homological variant of the theory that can be used to study the topology of triangulable homology manifolds by means of their order triangulations.
Strong homotopy types, nerves and collapses
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the theory of strong homotopy types of simplicial complexes. Similarly to classical simple homotopy theory, the strong homotopy types can be described by elementary moves. An elementary move in this setting is called a strong collapse and it is a particular kind of simplicial collapse. The advantage of using strong collapses is the existence and uniqueness of cores and their relationship with the nerves of the complexes. From this theory we derive new results for studying simplicial collapsibility with a different point of view. We analyze vertex-transitive simplicial $G$-actions and prove a particular case of the Evasiveness conjecture for simplicial complexes. Moreover, we reduce the general conjecture to the class of minimal complexes. We also strengthen a result of V. Welker on the barycentric subdivision of collapsible complexes. We obtain this and other results on collapsibility of polyhedra by means of the characterization of the different notions of collapses in terms of finite topological spaces.

One-point reductions of finite spaces, h-regular CW-complexes and collapsibility
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 8 (2008) 1763-1780 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate one-point reduction methods of finite topological spaces. These methods allow one to study homotopy theory of cell complexes by means of elementary moves of their finite models. We also introduce the notion of h-regular CW-complex, generalizing the concept of regular CW-complex, and prove that the h-regular CW-complexes, which are a sort of combinatorial-up-to-homotopy objects, are modeled (up to homotopy) by their associated finite spaces. This is accomplished by generalizing a classical result of McCord on simplicial complexes.

The geometry of relations
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is a canonical way to associate two simplicial complexes K, L to any relation $R\subset X\times Y$. Moreover, the geometric realizations of K and L are homotopy equivalent. This was studied in the fifties by C.H. Dowker. In this article we prove a Galois-type correspondence for relations $R\subset X\times Y$ when X is fixed and use these constructions to investigate finite posets (or equivalently, finite topological spaces) from a geometrical point of view. Given any poset $(X, \leq)$, we define the simplicial complexes K, L associated to the relation $\leq$. In many cases these polyhedra have the same homotopy type as the standard simplicial complex C of nonempty finite chains in X. We give a complete characterization of the simplicial complexes that are the K or L-complexes of some finite poset and prove that K and L are geometrically equivalent to the smaller complexes K',L' induced by the relation <. More precisely, we prove that K (resp. L) simplicially collapses to K' (resp. L').
2-Dimension from the topological viewpoint
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the 2-dimension of a finite poset from the topological point of view. We use homotopy theory of finite topological spaces and the concept of a beat point to improve the classical results on 2-dimension, giving a more complete answer to the problem of all possible 2-dimensions of an n-point poset.
