Balanced Stick Breaking
Consider an infinite sequence $(x_k)_{k=1}^{\infty}$ on the unit circle $\mathbb{S}^1$. We may interpret the first $n$ elements $(x_k)_{k=1}^{n}$ as places where the `circular stick' $\mathbb{S}^1$ is broken into a total of $n+1$ pieces. It is clear that they cannot all be the same length all the time. de Bruijn and Erdős (1949) show that the ratio of the largest to the smallest has to be arbitrarily close to 2 infinitely many times which is sharp. They also consider the problem of balancing the length of $r$ consecutive intervals and prove $$ \frac{\max \mbox{length of}~r~\mbox{consecutive intervals}}{\min \mbox{length of}~r~\mbox{consecutive intervals}} \geq 1 + \frac{1}{r}.$$ We prove that this ratio can be as small as $1 + c \log{r}/ r$. This is done by means of refined discrepancy estimates for the van der Corput sequence over very short intervals and proves a conjecture of Brethouwer.
Obtaining the Chamanara Surface from the van der Corput sequence
We investigate a family of $4$-regular graphs constructed to test for the presence of combinatorial structure in a sequence of distinct real numbers. We show that the graphs constructed from the Kronecker sequence can be embedded into the torus, while the graphs constructed from the binary van der Corput sequence can be embedded into the Chamanara surface, in both cases with the possible removal of one edge. These results allude to a general theory of sequence graphs which can be embedded into particular translation surfaces coming from interval exchange transformations.

Regular Structures in Kronecker Permutations
Kronecker sequences $(k α\mod 1)_{k=1}^{\infty}$ for some irrational $α> 0$ have played an important role in many areas of mathematics. It is possible to associate to each finite segment $(k α\mod 1)_{k=1}^{n}$ a permutation $π\in S_n$ associated with the canonical lifting to two dimensions. We show that these permutations induced by Kronecker sequences based on irrational $α$ are extremely regular for specific choices of $n$ and $α$. In particular, all quadratic irrationals have an infinite number of choices of $n$ that lead to permutations where no cycle has length more than 4.

Monotone Paths on Acyclic 3-Regular Graphs
Motivated by trying to understand the behavior of the simplex method, Athanasiadis, De Loera and Zhang provided upper and lower bounds on the number of the monotone paths on 3-polytopes. For simple 3-polytopes with $2n$ vertices, they showed that the number of monotone paths is bounded above by $(1+\varphi)^n$, with $\varphi$ being the golden ratio. We improve the result and show that for a larger family of graphs the number is bounded above by $c \cdot 1.6779^n$ for some universal constant $c$. Meanwhile, the best known construction and conjectured extremizer is approximately $\varphi^n$.

Small gaps in the Ulam sequence
The Ulam sequence, described by Stanislaw Ulam in the 1960s, starts $1,2$ and then iteratively adds the smallest integer that can be uniquely written as the sum of two distinct earlier terms: this gives $1,2,3,4,6,8,11,\dots$. Already in 1972 the great French poet Raymond Queneau wrote that it `gives an impression of great irregularity'. This irregularity appears to have a lot of structure which has inspired a great deal of work; nonetheless, very little is rigorously proven. We improve the best upper bound on its growth and show that at least some small gaps have to exist: for some $c>0$ and all $n \in \mathbb{N}$ $$ \min_{1 \leq k \leq n} \frac{a_{k+1}}{a_k} \leq 1 + c\frac{\log{n}}{n}.$$

Partitions for stratified sampling
Classical jittered sampling partitions $[0,1]^d$ into $m^d$ cubes for a positive integer $m$ and randomly places a point inside each of them, providing a point set of size $N=m^d$ with small discrepancy. The aim of this note is to provide a construction of partitions that works for arbitrary $N$ and improves straight-forward constructions. We show how to construct equivolume partitions of the $d$-dimensional unit cube with hyperplanes that are orthogonal to the main diagonal of the cube. We investigate the discrepancy of such point sets and optimise the expected discrepancy numerically by relaxing the equivolume constraint using different black-box optimisation techniques.

Distribution of distances in five dimensions and related problems
In this paper, we study the Erdős-Falconer distance problem in five dimensions for sets of Cartesian product structures. More precisely, we show that for $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p$ with $|A|\gg p^{\frac{13}{22}}$, then $Δ(A^5)=\mathbb{F}_p$. When $|A-A|\sim |A|$, we obtain stronger statements as follows: If $|A|\gg p^{\frac{13}{22}}$, then $(A-A)^2+A^2+A^2+A^2+A^2=\mathbb{F}_p.$ If $|A|\gg p^{\frac{4}{7}}$, then $(A-A)^2+(A-A)^2+A^2+A^2+A^2+A^2=\mathbb{F}_p.$ We also prove that if $p^{4/7}\ll |A-A|=K|A|\le p^{5/8}$, then \[|A^2+A^2|\gg \min \left\lbrace \frac{p}{K^4}, \frac{|A|^{8/3}}{K^{7/3}p^{2/3}}\right\rbrace.\] As a consequence, $|A^2+A^2|\gg p$ when $|A|\gg p^{5/8}$ and $K\sim 1$, where $A^2=\{x^2\colon x\in A\}$.
