Counting appearances of integers in sets of arithmetic progressions
The sequence $A067549$ of The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences is defined as $(a_k)_{k \geq 1}$ with $a_k$ being the determinant of the $k \times k$ matrix whose diagonal contains the first $k$ prime numbers and all other elements are ones. We relate this sequence to a concrete counting problem. Choose an arbitrary residue class $r_i$ for each prime $p_i$ with $1 \leq i \leq k$ and set $P_k = \prod_{i=1}^k p_i$. We show that $a_k$ is the number of integers in $[1, P_k]$ that are contained in \emph{at most} one of the $k$ chosen residue classes. Interestingly, we show that this sequence is closely related to the better known sequence $A005867$ for which we derive a novel characterisation in terms of determinants and which gives the number of integers in $[1, P_k]$ that are not contained in any of the $k$ residue classes.
Our proof is purely structural and, therefore, it can be generalised to counting appearances of integers in residue classes of arbitrary arithmetic progressions generated by $k$ different primes using the determinant of a matrix of ones having those $k$ primes on its diagonal. The revealed structure also offers a fast way of calculating such determinants.

We study the symmetry groups and winding numbers of planar curves obtained as images of weighted sums of exponentials. More generally, we study the image of the complex unit circle under a finite or infinite Laurent series using a particular parametrization of the circle. We generalize various previous results on such sums of exponentials and relate them to other classes of curves present in the literature. Moreover, we consider the evolution under the wave equation of such curves for the case of binomials. Interestingly, our methods provide a unified and systematic way of constructing curves with prescribed properties, such as the number of cusps, the number of intersection points or the winding number.
Partitions for stratified sampling
Classical jittered sampling partitions $[0,1]^d$ into $m^d$ cubes for a positive integer $m$ and randomly places a point inside each of them, providing a point set of size $N=m^d$ with small discrepancy. The aim of this note is to provide a construction of partitions that works for arbitrary $N$ and improves straight-forward constructions. We show how to construct equivolume partitions of the $d$-dimensional unit cube with hyperplanes that are orthogonal to the main diagonal of the cube. We investigate the discrepancy of such point sets and optimise the expected discrepancy numerically by relaxing the equivolume constraint using different black-box optimisation techniques.

We present tight upper and lower bounds for the traveling salesman path through the points of two-dimensional modular lattices. We use these results to bound the traveling salesman path of two-dimensional Kronecker point sets. Our results rely on earlier work on shortest vectors in lattices as well as on the strong convergence of Jacobi-Perron type algorithms.
