Neighbourhood complexity and identification problems for graphs of bounded treewidth and pathwidth
The neighbourhood complexity $nc(G,k)$ of a graph $G$ is a quantity measuring, for a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, the maximum possible number (over all vertex subsets $S$ of size $k$) $|\{N[v]\cap S, v\in V(G)\}|$ of $S$-neighbourhoods in $G$. This notion is important in structural graph theory and algorithm design (especially in parameterized complexity, in particular model checking and kernelization).
While generally $nc(G,k)\leq 2^k$ and this bound can be achieved, it is known that sparse graphs and structured dense graphs have linear neighbourhood complexity, that is, $nc(G,k)\in O(k)$ for any such graph $G$. However, for many graph classes, the best possible constants are not known. We focus on graphs of bounded treewidth and pathwidth, showing that (when $k\geq w+1$) (i) if $G$ has treewidth $w\geq 2$, then $nc(G,k)\leq (k-w+1)2^{w}+w$, and (ii) if $G$ has pathwidth $w\geq 2$, then $nc(G,k)\leq (k-w+2)2^{w-1}+2k-w-2$. Moreover, we provide constructions that reach these bounds, whenever $w\geq 2$ and $k\geq 2w+1$ ($k\geq 2w-1$ for pathwidth).
Interestingly, in contrast, we also have the tight bound $nc(G,k)\leq \frac{7}{3}k$, for graphs $G$ with pathwidth 1 or treewidth 1.
On Modular Edge Colourings of Graphs
Given a graph $G$ and an integer $k\geq 2$, let $χ'_k(G)$ denote the minimum number of colours required to colour the edges of $G$ such that, in each colour class, the subgraph induced by the edges of that colour has all non-zero degrees congruent to $1$ modulo $k$. In 1992, Pyber proved that $χ'_2(G) \leq 4$ for every graph $G$, and posed the question of whether $χ'_k(G)$ can be bounded solely in terms of $k$ for every $k\geq 3$. This question was answered in 1997 by Scott, who showed that $χ'_k(G)\leq5k^2\log k$, and further asked whether $χ'_k(G) = O(k)$. Recently, Botler, Colucci, and Kohayakawa (2023) answered Scott's question affirmatively proving that $χ'_k(G) \leq 198k - 101$, and conjectured that the multiplicative constant could be reduced to $1$. A step towards this latter conjecture was made in 2024 by Nweit and Yang, who improved the bound to $χ'_k(G) \leq 177k - 93$. In this paper, we further improve the multiplicative constant to $9$. More specifically, we prove that there is a function $f\in o(k)$ for which $χ'_k(G) \leq 7k + f(k)$ if $k$ is odd, and $χ'_k(G) \leq 9k + f(k)$ if $k$ is even. In doing so, we prove that $χ'_k(G) \leq k + O(d)$ for every $d$-degenerate graph $G$, which plays a central role in our proof.
Determining a graph from its reconfiguration graph
Given a graph $G$ and a natural number $k$, the $k$-recolouring graph $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-colourings of $G$ and whose edges link pairs of colourings which differ at exactly one vertex of $G$. Recently, Hogan et al. proved that $G$ can be determined from $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ provided $k$ is large enough (quadratic in the number of vertices of $G$). We improve this bound by showing that $k=χ(G)+1$ colours suffice, and provide examples of families of graphs for which $k=χ(G)$ colours do not suffice.
We then extend this result to $k$-Kempe-recolouring graphs, whose vertices are again the $k$-colourings of a graph $G$ and whose edges link pairs of colourings which differ by swapping the two colours in a connected component induced by selecting those two colours. We show that $k=χ(G)+2$ colours suffice to determine $G$ in this case.
Finally, we investigate the case of independent set reconfiguration, proving that in only a few trivial cases is one guaranteed to be able to determine a graph $G$.
