On Generic Linearly Constrained Frameworks
A linearly constrained framework in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a bar-joint framework where, in addition, vertices with loops are constrained to lie in given affine subspaces. In the generic case, when each vertex is incident to sufficiently many loops, a characterisation of rigidity was obtained by Jackson, Nixon and Tanigawa for all $d\geq 3$. By extending this to characterise the rank function of the linearly constrained rigidity matroid (under the same loop hypothesis), sufficient conditions for a looped simple graph to be (globally) rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are obtained. In the 2-dimensional case generic rigidity was characterised by Streinu and Theran, and we obtain a sharper sufficient condition in this case. A key technique is the application of the discharging method.

A sufficient condition for planar graphs with maximum degree eight to be totally 9-colorable
A total coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of the vertices and edges such that two adjacent or incident elements receive different colors. The minimum number of colors required for a total coloring of a graph $G$ is called the total chromatic number, denoted by $χ''(G)$. Let $G$ be a planar graph of maximum degree eight. It is known that $9\leq χ''(G) \leq 10$. We here prove that $χ''(G)=9$ when the graph does not contain any subgraph isomorphic to a $4$-fan.

A sufficient connectivity condition for rigidity and global rigidity of linearly constrained frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^2$

We study the bar-and-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^2$ such that some vertices are constrained to lie on some lines. The generic rigidity of such frameworks is characterised by Streinu and Theran (2010). Katoh and Tanigawa (2013) remarked that the corresponding matroid and its rank function can be characterised by using a submodular function. In this paper, we will transfer this characterisation of the rank function to the form of the value of a ``1-thin cover" and obtain a sufficient connectivity condition for rigidity and global rigidity of these frameworks analogous to the results of Lovász and Yemini (1982).

Coincident Rigidity of 2-Dimensional Frameworks

Fekete, Jordán and Kaszanitzky [4] characterised the graphs which can be realised as 2-dimensional, infinitesimally rigid, bar-joint frameworks in which two given vertices are coincident. We formulate a conjecture which would extend their characterisation to an arbitrary set T of vertices and verify our conjecture when |T| = 3.
Flexible circuits in the $d$-dimensional rigidity matroid

A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is rigid if the only edge-length preserving continuous motions of the vertices arise from isometries of $\mathbb{R}^d$. It is known that, when $(G,p)$ is generic, its rigidity depends only on the underlying graph $G$, and is determined by the rank of the edge set of $G$ in the generic $d$-dimensional rigidity matroid $\mathcal{R}_d$. Complete combinatorial descriptions of the rank function of this matroid are known when $d=1,2$, and imply that all circuits in $\mathcal{R}_d$ are generically rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ when $d=1,2$. Determining the rank function of $\mathcal{R}_d$ is a long standing open problem when $d\geq 3$, and the existence of non-rigid circuits in $\mathcal{R}_d$ for $d\geq 3$ is a major contributing factor to why this problem is so difficult. We begin a study of non-rigid circuits by characterising the non-rigid circuits in $\mathcal{R}_d$ which have at most $d+6$ vertices.

Global rigidity of 2-dimensional linearly constrained frameworks

A linearly constrained framework in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a point configuration together with a system of constraints which fixes the distances between some pairs of points and additionally restricts some of the points to lie in given affine subspaces. It is globally rigid if the configuration is uniquely defined by the constraint system, and is rigid if it is uniquely defined within some small open neighbourhood. Streinu and Theran characterised generic rigidity of linearly constrained frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^2$ in 2010. We obtain an analagous characterisation for generic global rigidity in $\mathbb{R}^2$. More precisely we show that a generic linearly constrained framework in $\mathbb{R}^2$ is globally rigid if and only if it is redundantly rigid and `balanced'. For generic frameworks which are not balanced, we determine the precise number of solutions to the constraint system whenever the underlying rigidity matroid of the given framework is connected. We also obtain a stress matrix sufficient condition and a Hendrickson type necessary condition for a generic linearly constrained framework to be globally rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$.
Rigidity of linearly-constrained frameworks

We consider the problem of characterising the generic rigidity of bar-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in which each vertex is constrained to lie in a given affine subspace. The special case when $d=2$ was previously solved by I. Streinu and L. Theran in 2010. We will extend their characterisation to the case when $d\geq 3$ and each vertex is constrained to lie in an affine subspace of dimension $t$, when $t=1,2$ and also when $t\geq 3$ and $d\geq t(t-1)$. We then point out that results on body-bar frameworks obtained by N. Katoh and S. Tanigawa in 2013 can be used to characterise when a graph has a rigid realisation as a $d$-dimensional body-bar framework with a given set of linear constraints.

A necessary condition for generic rigidity of bar-and-joint frameworks in $d$-space
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is $d$-sparse if each subset $X\subseteq V$ with $|X|\geq d$ induces at most $d|X|-{{d+1}\choose{2}}$ edges in $G$. Maxwell showed in 1864 that a necessary condition for a generic bar-and-joint framework with at least $d+1$ vertices to be rigid in ${\mathbb R}^d$ is that $G$ should have a $d$-sparse subgraph with $d|X|-{{d+1}\choose{2}}$ edges. This necessary condition is also sufficient when $d=1,2$ but not when $d\geq 3$. Cheng and Sitharam strengthened Maxwell's condition by showing that every maximal $d$-sparse subgraph of $G$ should have $d|X|-{{d+1}\choose{2}}$ edges when $d=3$. We extend their result to all $d\leq 11$.
