The matching energy is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the zeros of the matching polynomial of a graph, which is proposed first by Gutman and Wagner [The matching energy of a graph, Discrete Appl. Math. 160 (2012) 2177--2187]. And they gave some properties and asymptotic results of the matching energy. In this paper, we characterize the trees with $n$ vertices whose complements have the maximal, second-maximal and minimal matching energy. Further, we determine the trees with a perfect matching whose complements have the second-maximal matching energy. In particular, show that the trees with edge-independence number number $p$ whose complements have the minimum matching energy for $p=1,2,\ldots, \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$.

A polyomino graph $H$ is a connected finite subgraph of the infinite plane grid such that each finite face is surrounded by a regular square of side length one and each edge belongs to at least one square. In this paper, we show that if $K$ is a maximum resonant set of $H$, then $H-K$ has a unique perfect matching. We further prove that the maximum forcing number of a polyomino graph is equal to its Clar number. Based on this result, we have that the maximum forcing number of a polyomino graph can be computed in polynomial time. We also show that if $K$ is a maximal alternating set of $H$, then $H-K$ has a unique perfect matching.

The anti-forcing number of a perfect matching $M$ of a graph $G$ is the minimal number of edges not in $M$ whose removal make $M$ as a unique perfect matching of the resulting graph. The anti-forcing spectrum of $G$ is the set of anti-forcing numbers of all perfect matchings of $G$. In this paper we prove that the anti-forcing spectrum of any cata-condensed hexagonal system is continuous, that is, it is an integer interval.

The Clar number of a fullerene is the maximum number of independent resonant hexagons in the fullerene. It is known that the Clar number of a fullerene with n vertices is bounded above by [n/6]-2. We find that there are no fullerenes whose order n is congruent to 2 modulo 6 attaining this bound. In other words, the Clar number for a fullerene whose order n is congruent to 2 modulo 6 is bounded above by [n/6]-3. Moreover, we show that two experimentally produced fullerenes C80:1 (D5d) and C80:2 (D2) attain this bound. Finally, we present a graph-theoretical characterization for fullerenes, whose order n is congruent to 2 (respectively, 4) modulo 6, achieving the maximum Clar number [n/6]-3 (respectively, [n/6]-2).

Let $G^σ$ be an orientation of a simple graph $G$. In this paper, the permanental polynomial of an oriented graph $G^σ$ is introduced. The coefficients of the permanental polynomial of $G^σ$ are interpreted in terms of the graph structure of $G^σ$, and it is proved that all orientations $G^σ$ of $G$ have the same permanental polynomial if and only if $G$ has no even cycles. Furthermore, the roots of the permanental polynomial of $G^σ$ are studied.

A graph of order $n$ is $p$-factor-critical, where $p$ is an integer of the same parity as $n$, if the removal of any set of $p$ vertices results in a graph with a perfect matching. 1-factor-critical graphs and 2-factor-critical graphs are well-known factor-critical graphs and bicritical graphs, respectively. It is known that if a connected vertex-transitive graph has odd order, then it is factor-critical, otherwise it is elementary bipartite or bicritical. In this paper, we show that a connected vertex-transitive non-bipartite graph of even order at least 6 is 4-factor-critical if and only if its degree is at least 5. This result implies that each connected non-bipartite Cayley graphs of even order and degree at least 5 is 2-extendable.

We define the anti-forcing number of a perfect matching $M$ of a graph $G$ as the minimal number of edges of $G$ whose deletion results in a subgraph with a unique perfect matching $M$, denoted by $af(G,M)$. The anti-forcing number of a graph proposed by Vukičević and Trinajstić in Kekulé structures of molecular graphs is in fact the minimum anti-forcing number of perfect matchings. For plane bipartite graph $G$ with a perfect matching $M$, we obtain a minimax result: $af(G,M)$ equals the maximal number of $M$-alternating cycles of $G$ where any two either are disjoint or intersect only at edges in $M$. For a hexagonal system $H$, we show that the maximum anti-forcing number of $H$ equals the Fries number of $H$. As a consequence, we have that the Fries number of $H$ is between the Clar number of $H$ and twice. Further, some extremal graphs are discussed.

The bondage number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the cardinality of a minimum edge set whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with the domination number greater than that of $G$. It is a parameter to measure the vulnerability of a communication network under link failure. In this paper, we obtain the exact value of the bondage number of the strong product of a complete graph and a path. That is, for any two integers $m\geq1$ and $n\geq2$, $b(K_{m}\boxtimes P_{n})=\lceil\frac{m}{2}\rceil$ if $n\equiv 0$ (mod 3); $m$ if $n\equiv 2$ (mod 3); $\lceil\frac{3m}{2}\rceil$ if $n\equiv 1$ (mod 3). Furthermore, we determine the exact value of the bondage number of the strong product of a complete graph and a special starlike tree.

Ruskey and Savage asked the following question: Does every matching of $Q_{n}$ for $n\geq2$ extend to a Hamiltonian cycle of $Q_{n}$? J. Fink showed that the question is true for every perfect matching, and solved the Kreweras' conjecture. In this paper we consider the question in hypercubes with faulty edges. We show that every matching $M$ of at most $2n-1$ edges can be extended to a Hamiltonian cycle of $Q_{n}$ for $n\geq2$. Moreover, we can prove that when $n\geq4$ and $M$ is nonempty this result still holds even if $Q_{n}$ has at most $n-1-\lceil\frac{|M|}{2}\rceil$ faulty edges with one exception.

A graph of order $n$ is $p$-factor-critical, where $p$ is an integer of the same parity as $n$, if the removal of any set of $p$ vertices results in a graph with a perfect matching. 1-Factor-critical graphs and 2-factor-critical graphs are factor-critical graphs and bicritical graphs, respectively. It is well known that every connected vertex-transitive graph of odd order is factor-critical and every connected non-bipartite vertex-transitive graph of even order is bicritical. In this paper, we show that a simple connected vertex-transitive graph of odd order at least 5 is 3-factor-critical if and only if it is not a cycle.

A fullerene graph $F$ is a planar cubic graph with exactly 12 pentagonal faces and other hexagonal faces. A set $\mathcal{H}$ of disjoint hexagons of $F$ is called a resonant pattern (or sextet pattern) if $F$ has a perfect matching $M$ such that every hexagon in $\mathcal{H}$ is $M$-alternating. $F$ is said to be $k$-resonant if any $i$ ($0\leq i\leq k$) disjoint hexagons of $F$ form a resonant pattern. It was known that each fullerene graph is 1-resonant and all 3-resonant fullerenes are only the nine graphs. In this paper, we show that the fullerene graphs which do not contain the subgraph $L$ or $R$ as illustrated in Fig. 1 are 2-resonant except for the specific eleven graphs. This result implies that each IPR fullerene is 2-resonant.
A relation between Clar covering polynomial and cube polynomial
The Clar covering polynomial (also called Zhang-Zhang polynomial in some chemical literature) of a hexagonal system is a counting polynomial for some types of resonant structures called Clar covers, which can be used to determine Kekulé count, the first Herndon number and Clar number, and so on. In this paper we find that the Clar covering polynomial of a hexagonal system H coincides with the cube polynomial of its resonance graph R(H) by establishing a one-to-one correspondence between the Clar covers of H and the hypercubes in R(H). Accordingly, some applications are presented.

The permanental polynomial of a graph $G$ is $π(G,x)\triangleq\mathrm{per}(xI-A(G))$. From the result that a bipartite graph $G$ admits an orientation $G^e$ such that every cycle is oddly oriented if and only if it contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$, Yan and Zhang showed that the permanental polynomial of such a bipartite graph $G$ can be expressed as the characteristic polynomial of the skew adjacency matrix $A(G^e)$. In this paper we first prove that this equality holds only if the bipartite graph $G$ contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$. Then we prove that such bipartite graphs are planar. Further we mainly show that a 2-connected bipartite graph contains no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$ if and only if it is planar 1-cycle resonant. This implies that each cycle is oddly oriented in any Pfaffian orientation of a 2-connected bipartite graph containing no even subdivision of $K_{2,3}$. As applications, permanental polynomials for some types of bipartite graphs are computed.

A distributive lattice structure ${\mathbf M}(G)$ has been established on the set of perfect matchings of a plane bipartite graph $G$. We call a lattice {\em matchable distributive lattice} (simply MDL) if it is isomorphic to such a distributive lattice. It is natural to ask which lattices are MDLs. We show that if a plane bipartite graph $G$ is elementary, then ${\mathbf M}(G)$ is irreducible. Based on this result, a decomposition theorem on MDLs is obtained: a finite distributive lattice $\mathbf{L}$ is an MDL if and only if each factor in any cartesian product decomposition of $\mathbf{L}$ is an MDL. Two types of MDLs are presented: $J(\mathbf{m}\times \mathbf{n})$ and $J(\mathbf{T})$, where $\mathbf{m}\times \mathbf{n}$ denotes the cartesian product between $m$-element chain and $n$-element chain, and $\mathbf{T}$ is a poset implied by any orientation of a tree.

A connected graph $G$ with at least $2m+2n+2$ vertices is said to have property $E(m,n)$ if, for any two disjoint matchings $M$ and $N$ of size $m$ and $n$ respectively, $G$ has a perfect matching $F$ such that $M\subseteq F$ and $N\cap F=\varnothing$. In particular, a graph with $E(m,0)$ is $m$-extendable. Let $μ(Σ)$ be the smallest integer $k$ such that no graphs embedded on a surface $Σ$ are $k$-extendable. Aldred and Plummer have proved that no graphs embedded on the surfaces $Σ$ such as the sphere, the projective plane, the torus, and the Klein bottle are
$E(μ(Σ)-1,1)$. In this paper, we show that this result always holds for any surface. Furthermore, we obtain that if a graph $G$ embedded on a surface has sufficiently many vertices, then $G$ has no property $E(k-1,1)$ for each integer $k\geq 4$, which implies that $G$ is not $k$-extendable. In the case of $k=4$, we get immediately a main result that Aldred et al. recently obtained.

A graph $G$ is Pfaffian if it has an orientation such that each central cycle $C$ (i.e. $C$ is even and $G-V(C)$ has a perfect matching) has an odd number of edges directed in either direction of the cycle. The number of perfect matchings of Pfaffian graphs can be computed in polynomial time. In this paper, by applying the characterization of Pfaffian braces due to Robertson, Seymour and Thomas [Ann. Math. 150 (1999) 929-975], and independently McCuaig [Electorn. J. Combin. 11 (2004) #R79], we show that every embedding of a Pfaffian brace on a surface with positive genus has face-width at most 3. For a Pfaffian cubic brace, we obtain further structure properties which are useful in characterizing Pfaffian polyhex graphs. Combining with polyhex graphs with face-width 2, we show that a bipartite polyhex graph is Pfaffian if and only if it is isomorphic to the cube, the Heawood graph or $C_k\times K_2$ for even integers $k\ge 6$, and all non-bipartite polyhex graphs are Pfaffian.

A fullerene graph is a cubic 3-connected plane graph with (exactly 12) pentagonal faces and hexagonal faces. Let $F_n$ be a fullerene graph with $n$ vertices. A set $\mathcal H$ of mutually disjoint hexagons of $F_n$ is a sextet pattern if $F_n$ has a perfect matching which alternates on and off each hexagon in $\mathcal H$. The maximum cardinality of sextet patterns of $F_n$ is the Clar number of $F_n$. It was shown that the Clar number is no more than $\lfloor\frac {n-12} 6\rfloor$. Many fullerenes with experimental evidence attain the upper bound, for instance, $\text{C}_{60}$ and $\text{C}_{70}$. In this paper, we characterize extremal fullerene graphs whose Clar numbers equal $\frac{n-12} 6$. By the characterization, we show that there are precisely 18 fullerene graphs with 60 vertices, including $\text{C}_{60}$, achieving the maximum Clar number 8 and we construct all these extremal fullerene graphs.

A fullerene graph $F$ is a 3-connected plane cubic graph with exactly 12 pentagons and the remaining hexagons. Let $M$ be a perfect matching of $F$. A cycle $C$ of $F$ is $M$-alternating if the edges of $C$ appear alternately in and off $M$. A set $\mathcal H$ of disjoint hexagons of $F$ is called a resonant pattern (or sextet pattern) if $F$ has a perfect matching $M$ such that all hexagons in $\mathcal H$ are $M$-alternating. A fullerene graph $F$ is $k$-resonant if any $i$ ($0\leq i \leq k$) disjoint hexagons of $F$ form a resonant pattern. In this paper, we prove that every hexagon of a fullerene graph is resonant and all leapfrog fullerene graphs are 2-resonant. Further, we show that a 3-resonant fullerene graph has at most 60 vertices and construct all nine 3-resonant fullerene graphs, which are also $k$-resonant for every integer $k>3$. Finally, sextet polynomials of the 3-resonant fullerene graphs are computed.
