An Ore-type condition for regular factors
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ satisfying the following Ore-type condition: For any two nonadjacent vertices $x$ and $y$ of $G$, $d_G(x)+d_G(y)\geq n+k-2$, where $1\leq k\leq n-1$, $kn$ is even and $d_G(x)$ is the degree of $x$ in $G$. It is well known that $G$ has a $k$-factor for $k=1$ or $2$. Lu and Ning (J. Graph Theory, 94(2020), 307-319) proved that if $k\geq n/2$, then $G$ has a $k$-factor. In this paper, we show that $G$ has a $k$-factor for any $1\leq k\leq n-1$.

Chvátal-Erdős condition for 2-factors with at most two components in graphs
It is well-known that Chvátal and Erdős stated that any graph of order at least three whose independence number is no greater than its connectivity is Hamiltonian; that any graph whose independence number is no greater than its connectivity minus one is Hamilton-connected; and that any graph whose independence number is no greater than its connectivity plus one is traceable. Kaneko and Yoshimoto [J. Graph Theory 43 (2003) 269--279] showed that every 4-connected graph of order at least six has a 2-factor with two components if its independence number is no greater than its connectivity. In this paper, we show that any connected graph of order at least three times its connectivity plus three has a 2-factor with at most two components, except for one exceptional class, if its independence number is no greater than its connectivity plus one. Our result is best possible.
On the edge reconstruction of the characteristic and permanental polynomials of a simple graph
As a variant of the Ulam's vertex reconstruction conjecture and the Harary's edge reconstruction conjecture, Cvetković and Schwenk posed independently the following problem: Can the characteristic polynomial of a simple graph $G$ with vertex set $V$ be reconstructed from the characteristic polynomials of all subgraphs in $\{G-v|v\in V\}$ for $|V|\geq 3$? This problem is still open. A natural problem is: Can the characteristic polynomial of a simple graph $G$ with edge set $E$ be reconstructed from the characteristic polynomials of all subgraphs in $\{G-e|e\in E\}$? In this paper, we prove that if $|V|\neq |E|$, then the characteristic polynomial of $G$ can be reconstructed from the characteristic polynomials of all subgraphs in $\{G-uv, G-u-v|uv\in E\}$, and the similar result holds for the permanental polynomial of $G$. We also prove that the Laplacian (resp. signless Laplacian) characteristic polynomial of $G$ can be reconstructed from the Laplacian (resp. signless Laplacian) characteristic polynomials of all subgraphs in $\{G-e|e\in E\}$ (resp. if $|V|\neq |E|$).

On the edge reconstruction of six digraph polynomials
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a digraph having no loops and no multiple arcs, with vertex set $V=\{v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_n\}$ and arc set $E=\{e_1,e_2,\ldots,e_m\}$. Denote the adjacency matrix and the vertex in-degree diagonal matrix of $G$ by $A=(a_{ij})_{n\times n}$ and $D=diag(d^+(v_1),d^+(v_2),\cdots,d^+(v_n))$, where $a_{ij}=1$ if $(v_i,v_j)\in E(G)$ and $a_{ij}=0$ otherwise, and $d^+(v_i)$ is the number of arcs with head $v_i$. Set $f_1(G;x)=\det(xI-A), f_2(G;x)=\det(xI-D+A),f_3(G;x)=\det(xI-D-A),f_4(G;x)={\rm per}(xI-A), f_5(G;x)={\rm per}(xI-D+A),f_6(G;x)={\rm per}(xI-D-A)$, where $\det(X)$ and ${\rm per}(X)$ denote the determinant and the permanent of a square matrix $X$, respectively. In this paper, we consider a variant of the Ulam's vertex reconstruction conjecture and the Harary's edge reconstruction conjecture, and prove that, for any $1\leq i\leq 6$, \begin{equation*} (m-n)f_i(G;x)+xf_i'(G;x)=\sum\limits_{e\in E}f_i(G-e;x), \end{equation*} which implies that if $m\neq n$, then $f_i(G;x)$ can be reconstructed from $\{f_i(G-e;x)|e\in E\}$.

Enumeration of spanning trees of middle graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $D$ be a connected weighted digraph. The relation between the vertex weighted complexity (with a fixed root) of the line digraph of $D$ and the edge weighted complexity (with a fixed root) of $D$ has been given in (L. Levine, Sandpile groups and spanning trees of directed line graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011) 350-364) and, independently, in (S. Sato, New proofs for Levine's theorems, Linear Algebra Appl. 435 (2011) 943-952). In this paper, we obtain a relation between the vertex weighted complexity of the middle digraph of $D$ and the edge weighted complexity of $D$. Particularly, when the weight of each arc and each vertex of $D$ is 1, the enumerative formula of spanning trees of the middle digraph of a general digraph is obtained.

Solving the dimer problem of the vertex-edge graph of a cubic graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$, and $L(G)$ be the line graph of $G$, which has vertex set $E(G)$ and two vertices $e$ and $f$ of $L(G)$ is adjacent if $e$ and $f$ is incident in $G$. The vertex-edge graph $M(G)$ of $G$ has vertex set $V(G)\cup E(G)$ and edge set $E(L(G))\cup \{ue,ve|\ \forall\ e=uv\in E(G)\}$. In this paper, by a combinatorial technique, we show that if $G$ is a connected cubic graph with an even number of edges, then the number of dimer coverings of $M(G)$ equals $2^{|V(G)|/2+1}3^{|V(G)|/4}$. As an application, we obtain the exact solution of the dimer problem of the weighted solicate network obtained from the hexagonal lattice in the context of statistical physics.

The super-connectivity of Kneser graph KG(n,3)
A vertex cut $S$ of a connected graph $G$ is a subset of vertices of $G$ whose deletion makes $G$ disconnected. A super vertex cut $S$ of a connected graph $G$ is a subset of vertices of $G$ whose deletion makes $G$ disconnected and there is no isolated vertex in each component of $G-S$. The super-connectivity of graph $G$ is the size of the minimum super vertex cut of $G$. Let $KG(n,k)$ be the Kneser graph whose vertices set are the $k$-subsets of $\{1,\cdots,n\}$, where $k$ is the number of labels of each vertex in $G$. We aim to show that the conjecture from Boruzanli and Gauci \cite{EG19} on the super-connectivity of Kneser graph $KG(n,k)$ is true when $k=3$.

Expression for the Number of Spanning Trees of Line Graphs of Arbitrary Connected Graphs
Published in J.Graph Theory 85 (2017) 74-93 • View PublicationBIB
For any graph $G$, let $t(G)$ be the number of spanning trees of $G$, $L(G)$ be the line graph of $G$ and for any non-negative integer $r$, $S_r(G)$ be the graph obtained from $G$ by replacing each edge $e$ by a path of length $r+1$ connecting the two ends of $e$. In this paper we obtain an expression for $t(L(S_r(G)))$ in terms of spanning trees of $G$ by a combinatorial approach. This result generalizes some known results on the relation between $t(L(S_r(G)))$ and $t(G)$ and gives an explicit expression $t(L(S_r(G)))=k^{m+s-n-1}(rk+2)^{m-n+1}t(G)$ if $G$ is of order $n+s$ and size $m+s$ in which $s$ vertices are of degree $1$ and the others are of degree $k$. Thus we prove a conjecture on $t(L(S_1(G)))$ for such a graph $G$.

Extremal matching energy of complements of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
The matching energy is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the zeros of the matching polynomial of a graph, which is proposed first by Gutman and Wagner [The matching energy of a graph, Discrete Appl. Math. 160 (2012) 2177--2187]. And they gave some properties and asymptotic results of the matching energy. In this paper, we characterize the trees with $n$ vertices whose complements have the maximal, second-maximal and minimal matching energy. Further, we determine the trees with a perfect matching whose complements have the second-maximal matching energy. In particular, show that the trees with edge-independence number number $p$ whose complements have the minimum matching energy for $p=1,2,\ldots, \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$.

Perfect matchings of line graphs with small maximum degree
Let $G$ be a connected graph with vertex set $V(G)=\{v_1,v_2,...,v_ν\}$, which may have multiple edges but have no loops, and $2\leq d_G(v_i)\leq 3$ for $i=1,2,...,ν$, where $d_G(v)$ denotes the degree of vertex $v$ of $G$. We show that if $G$ has an even number of edges, then the number of perfect matchings of the line graph of $G$ equals $2^{n/2+1}$, where $n$ is the number of 3-degree vertices of $G$. As a corollary, we prove that the number of perfect matchings of a connected cubic line graph with $n$ vertices equals $2^{n/6+1}$ if $n>4$, which implies the conjecture by Lovász and Plummer holds for the connected cubic line graphs. As applications, we enumerate perfect matchings of the Kagomé lattices, $3.12.12$ lattices, and Sierpinski gasket with dimension two in the context of statistical physics.

Asymptotic energy of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The energy of a simple graph $G$ arising in chemical physics, denoted by $\mathcal E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of eigenvalues of $G$. We consider the asymptotic energy per vertex (say asymptotic energy) for lattice systems. In general for a type of lattice in statistical physics, to compute the asymptotic energy with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions are different tasks with different hardness. In this paper, we show that if $\{G_n\}$ is a sequence of finite simple graphs with bounded average degree and $\{G_n'\}$ a sequence of spanning subgraphs of $\{G_n\}$ such that almost all vertices of $G_n$ and $G_n'$ have the same degrees, then $G_n$ and $G_n'$ have the same asymptotic energy. Thus, for each type of lattices with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions, we have the same asymptotic energy. As applications, we obtain the asymptotic formulae of energies per vertex of the triangular, $3^3.4^2$, and hexagonal lattices with toroidal, cylindrical, Mobius-band, Klein-bottle, and free boundary conditions simultaneously.

Matchings and entropies of cylinders
The enumeration of perfect matchings of graphs is equivalent to the dimer problem which has applications in statistical physics. A graph $G$ is said to be $n$-rotation symmetric if the cyclic group of order $n$ is a subgroup of the automorphism group of $G$. Jockusch (Perfect matchings and perfect squares, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 67(1994), 100-115) and Kuperberg (An exploration of the permanent-determinant method, Electron. J. Combin., 5(1998), #46) proved independently that if $G$ is a plane bipartite graph of order $N$ with $2n$-rotation symmetry, then the number of perfect matchings of $G$ can be expressed as the product of $n$ determinants of order $N/2n$. In this paper we give this result a new presentation. We use this result to compute the entropy of a bulk plane bipartite lattice with $2n$-notation symmetry. We obtain explicit expressions for the numbers of perfect matchings and entropies for two types of cylinders. Using the results on the entropy of the torus obtained by Kenyon, Okounkov, and Sheffield (Dimers and amoebae, Ann. Math. 163(2006), 1019--1056) and by Salinas and Nagle (Theory of the phase transition in the layered hydrogen-bonded $SnCl^2\cdot 2H_2O$ crystal, Phys. Rev. B, 9(1974), 4920--4931), we show that each of the cylinders considered and its corresponding torus have the same entropy. Finally, we pose some problems.

Enumeration of subtrees of trees

Let $T$ be a weighted tree. The weight of a subtree $T_1$ of $T$ is defined as the product of weights of vertices and edges of $T_1$. We obtain a linear-time algorithm to count the sum of weights of subtrees of $T$. As applications, we characterize the tree with the diameter at least $d$, which has the maximum number of subtrees, and we characterize the tree with the maximum degree at least $Δ$, which has the minimum number of subtrees.

The determinant of q-distance matrices of trees and two quantities relating to permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove that two quantities relating to the length of permutations defined on trees are independent of the structures of trees. We also find that these results are closely related to the results obtained by Graham and Pollak (Bell System Tech. J. 50(1971) 2495--2519) and by Bapat, Kirkland, and Neumann (Linear Alg. Appl. 401(2005) 193--209).

Replacing Pfaffians and applications

We present some Pfaffian identities, which are completely different from the Plücker relations. As consequences we obtain a quadratic identity for the number of perfect matchings of plane graphs, which has a simpler form than the formula by Yan et al (Graphical condensation of plane graphs: a combinatorial approach, Theoret. Comput. Sci., to appear), and we also obtain some new determinant identities.

Enumeration of perfect matchings of a type of Cartesian products of graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 154(2006), 145-157 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph and let Pm$(G)$ denote the number of perfect matchings of $G$. We denote the path with $m$ vertices by $P_m$ and the Cartesian product of graphs $G$ and $H$ by $G\times H$. In this paper, as the continuance of our paper [19], we enumerate perfect matchings in a type of Cartesian products of graphs by the Pfaffian method, which was discovered by Kasteleyn. Here are some of our results: 1. Let $T$ be a tree and let $C_n$ denote the cycle with $n$ vertices. Then Pm$(C_4\times T)=\prod (2+α^2)$, where the product ranges over all eigenvalues $α$ of $T$. Moreover, we prove that Pm$(C_4\times T)$ is always a square or double a square. 2. Let $T$ be a tree. Then Pm$(P_4\times T)=\prod (1+3α^2+α^4)$, where the product ranges over all non-negative eigenvalues $α$ of $T$. 3. Let $T$ be a tree with a perfect matching. Then Pm$(P_3\times T)=\prod (2+α^2),$ where the product ranges over all positive eigenvalues $α$ of $T$. Moreover, we prove that Pm$(C_4\times T)=[{Pm}(P_3\times T)]^2$.

Graphical condensation of plane graphs: a combinatorial approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
The method of graphical vertex-condensation for enumerating perfect matchings of plane bipartite graph was found by Propp (Theoret. Comput. Sci. 303(2003), 267-301), and was generalized by Kuo (Theoret. Comput. Sci. 319 (2004), 29-57) and Yan and Zhang (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 110(2005), 113-125). In this paper, by a purely combinatorial method some explicit identities on graphical vertex-condensation for enumerating perfect matchings of plane graphs (which do not need to be bipartite) are obtained. As applications of our results, some results on graphical edge-condensation for enumerating perfect matchings are proved, and we count the sum of weights of perfect matchings of weighted Aztec diamond.
