Rank of Near Uniform Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
A central question in random matrix theory is universality. When an emergent phenomena is observed from a large collection of chosen random variables it is natural to ask if this behavior is specific to the chosen random variable or if the behavior occurs for a larger class of random variables. The rank statistics of random matrices chosen uniformly from $\operatorname{Mat}(\mathbf{F}_q)$ over a finite field are well understood. The universality properties of these statistics are not yet fully understood however. Recently Wood [39] and Maples [26] considered a natural requirement where the random variables are not allowed to be too close to constant and they showed that the rank statistics match with the uniform model up to an error of type $e^{-cn}$. In this paper we explore a condition called near uniform, under which we are able to prove tighter bounds $q^{-cn}$ on the asymptotic convergence of the rank statistics. Our method is completely elementary, and allows for a small number of the entries to be deterministic, and for the entries to not be identically distributed so long as they are independent. More importantly, the method also extends to near uniform symmetric, alternating matrices. Our method also applies to two models of perturbations of random matrices sampled uniformly over $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbf{F}_q)$: subtracting the identity or taking a minor of a uniformly sampled invertible matrix.

We show that several statistics of the number of intersections between random eigenfunctions of general eigenvalues with a given smooth curve in flat tori are universal under various families of randomness.

A general law of large permanent

We show that permanents of doubly stochastic matrices with balanced entries are not far away from the minimum $n!/n^n$. As an application, we give a general law of large permanent, answering a question by Bochi, Iommi and Ponce

Random matrices: tail bounds for gaps between eigenvalues
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gaps (or spacings) between consecutive eigenvalues are a central topic in random matrix theory. The goal of this paper is to study the tail distribution of these gaps in various random matrix models. We give the first repulsion bound for random matrices with discrete entries and the first super-polynomial bound on the probability that a random graph has simple spectrum, along with several applications.

Near invariance of the hypercube
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an almost-complete description of orthogonal matrices $M$ of order $n$ that "rotate a non-negligible fraction of the Boolean hypercube $C_n=\{-1,1\}^n$ onto itself," in the sense that $$P_{x\in C_n}(Mx\in C_n) \ge n^{-C},\mbox{ for some positive constant } C,$$ where $x$ is sampled uniformly over $C_n$. In particular, we show that such matrices $M$ must be very close to products of permutation and reflection matrices. This result is a step toward characterizing those orthogonal and unitary matrices with large permanents, a question with applications to linear-optical quantum computing.

Real roots of random polynomials: expectation and repulsion
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $P_{n}(x)= \sum_{i=0}^n ξ_i x^i$ be a Kac random polynomial where the coefficients $ξ_i$ are iid copies of a given random variable $ξ$. Our main result is an optimal quantitative bound concerning real roots repulsion. This leads to an optimal bound on the probability that there is a double root. As an application, we consider the problem of estimating the number of real roots of $P_n$, which has a long history and in particular was the main subject of a celebrated series of papers by Littlewood and Offord from the 1940s. We show, for a large and natural family of atom variables $ξ$, that the expected number of real roots of $P_n(x)$ is exactly $\frac{2}π \log n +C +o(1)$, where $C$ is an absolute constant depending on the atom variable $ξ$. Prior to this paper, such a result was known only for the case when $ξ$ is Gaussian.

On the number of real roots of random polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Roots of random polynomials have been studied exclusively in both analysis and probability for a long time. A famous result by Ibragimov and Maslova, generalizing earlier fundamental works of Kac and Erdos-Offord, showed that the expectation of the number of real roots is $\frac{2}π \log n + o(\log n)$. In this paper, we determine the true nature of the error term by showing that the expectation equals $\frac{2}π\log n + O(1)$. Prior to this paper, such estimate has been known only in the gaussian case, thanks to works of Edelman and Kostlan.

The Elliptic Law
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices Vol. 2015, No. 17 (2015), pp. 7620--7689 • View PublicationBIB
We show that, under some general assumptions on the entries of a random complex $n \times n$ matrix $X_n$, the empirical spectral distribution of $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} X_n$ converges to the uniform law of an ellipsoid as $n$ tends to infinity. This generalizes the well-known circular law in random matrix theory.

Optimal Inverse Littlewood-Offord theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let eta_i be iid Bernoulli random variables, taking values -1,1 with probability 1/2. Given a multiset V of n integers v_1,..., v_n, we define the concentration probability as rho(V) := sup_{x} Pr(v_1 eta_1+...+ v_n eta_n=x). A classical result of Littlewood-Offord and Erdos from the 1940s asserts that if the v_i are non-zero, then rho(V) is O(n^{-1/2}). Since then, many researchers obtained improved bounds by assuming various extra restrictions on V. About 5 years ago, motivated by problems concerning random matrices, Tao and Vu introduced the Inverse Littlewood-Offord problem. In the inverse problem, one would like to give a characterization of the set V, given that rho(V) is relatively large. In this paper, we introduce a new method to attack the inverse problem. As an application, we strengthen a previous result of Tao and Vu, obtaining an optimal characterization for V. This immediately implies several classical theorems, such as those of Sarkozy-Szemeredi and Halasz. The method also applies in the continuous setting and leads to a simple proof for the beta-net theorem of Tao and Vu, which plays a key role in their recent studies of random matrices. All results extend to the general case when V is a subset of an abelian torsion-free group and eta_i are independent variables satisfying some weak conditions.

Classification theorems for sumsets modulo a prime

Let $\Z/pZ$ be the finite field of prime order $p$ and $A$ be a subsequence of $\Z/pZ$. We prove several classification results about the following questions: (1) When can one represent zero as a sum of some elements of $A$ ? (2) When can one represent every element of $\Z/pZ$ as a sum of some elements of $A$ ? (3) When can one represent every element of $\Z/pZ$ as a sum of $l$ elements of $A$ ?

Squares in sumsets
Published • View PublicationBIB
A finite set $A$ of integers is square-sum-free if there is no subset of $A$ sums up to a square. In 1986, Erd\H os posed the problem of determining the largest cardinality of a square-sum-free subset of $\{1, ..., n \}$. Answering this question, we show that this maximum cardinality is of order $n^{1/3+o(1)}$.

We show that with high probability a random set of size $Θ(n^{1-1/k})$ of $\{1,...,n\}$ contains two elements $a$ and $a+d^k$, where $d$ is a positive integer. As a consequence, we prove an analogue of Sárközy-Fürstenberg's theorem for random set.
