Fatness and Flatness
Fat minors are the metric analog of graph minors that are tailored to the analysis of metric (edge-weighted) graphs and, more generally, metric spaces having a suitable notion of shortest paths. Despite a large interest in this notion, not much is known about the structure of metric graphs excluding a fixed fat minor. We prove that if a metric graph $G$ excludes a fixed graph $H$ as a $δ$-fat minor, for some $δ>0$, then $G$ enjoys the metric analog of flatness (aka uniform quasi-wideness) - a structural property from the field of Sparsity. In essence, our flatness result says that for any $α\geq β$ large enough compared to $δ$, in every large enough set $A$ in $G$ one can find a sizable subset $B$ that becomes $α$-scattered after removing a bounded number of balls of radius $β$. We call this property drill-flatness. Notably, the proof only relies on excluding shallow fat minors: every branch set has radius at most $2α$. As a corollary, we prove that metric graphs that exclude a fixed $δ$-fat minor have bounded $\varepsilon$-scatter dimension if we consider only $\varepsilon$-scatters at distances large enough compared to $δ$. By combining this with the results of Abbasi et al. [FOCS 2023], we infer that the $k$-Center problem on instances excluding $H$ as a $δ$-fat minor admits an approximation algorithm that finds a solution of cost at most $(1+\varepsilon)\cdot\mathsf{OPT}+{\cal O}(δ/\varepsilon^2)$ in time ${\cal O}_{H,\varepsilon}(n^{{\cal O}(1)})$. This is one of the first algorithmic results for general fat-minor-free metrics. We also study drill-flatness in hereditary classes of (unweighted) graphs, where we obtain a characterization equating drill-flatness with excluding shallow induced minors. This is an induced analog of the equivalence between flatness and nowhere denseness - one of central results of Sparsity.
Coarse Balanced Separators in Fat-Minor-Free Graphs
Fat minors are a coarse analogue of graph minors where the subgraphs modeling vertices and edges of the embedded graph are required to be distant from each other, instead of just being disjoint. In this paper, we give a coarse analogue of the classic theorem that an $n$-vertex graph excluding a fixed minor admits a balanced separator of size $O(\sqrt{n})$. Specifically, we prove that for every integer $d$, real $\varepsilon>0$, and graph $H$, there exist constants $c$ and $r$ such that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ excluding $H$ as a $d$-fat minor admits a set $S \subseteq V(G)$ that is a balanced separator of $G$ and can be covered by $c n^{\frac{1}{2}+\varepsilon}$ balls of radius $r$ in $G$. Our proof also works in the weighted setting where the balance of the separator is measured with respect to any weight function on the vertices, and is effective: we obtain a randomized polynomial-time algorithm to compute either such a balanced separator, or a $d$-fat model of $H$ in $G$.

Multi-parameter Szemerédi-Trotter-type theorems and applications in finite fields
We prove some novel multi-parameter point-line incidence estimates in vector spaces over finite fields. While these could be seen as special cases of higher-dimensional incidence results, they outperform their more general counterparts in those contexts. We go on to present a number of applications to illustrate their use in combinatorial problems from geometry and number theory.

VC Set Systems in Minor-free (Di)Graphs and Applications
A recent line of work on VC set systems in minor-free (undirected) graphs, starting from Li and Parter, who constructed a new VC set system for planar graphs, has given surprising algorithmic results. In this work, we initialize a more systematic study of VC set systems for minor-free graphs and their applications in both undirected graphs and directed graphs (a.k.a digraphs). More precisely: - We propose a new variant of Li-Parter set system for undirected graphs. - We extend our set system to $K_h$-minor-free digraphs and show that its VC dimension is $O(h^2)$. - We show that the system of directed balls in minor-free digraphs has VC dimension at most $h-1$. - On the negative side, we show that VC set system constructed from shortest path trees of planar digraphs does not have a bounded VC dimension. The highlight of our work is the results for digraphs, as we are not aware of known algorithmic work on constructing and exploiting VC set systems for digraphs.
Large induced acyclic and outerplanar subgraphs of 2-outerplanar graph

Albertson and Berman conjectured that every planar graph has an induced forest on half of its vertices. The best known lower bound, due to Borodin, is that every planar graph has an induced forest on two fifths of its vertices. In a related result, Chartran and Kronk, proved that the vertices of every planar graph can be partitioned into three sets, each of which induce a forest. We show tighter results for 2-outerplanar graphs. We show that every 2-outerplanar graph has an induced forest on at least half the vertices by showing that its vertices can be partitioned into two sets, each of which induces a forest. We also show that every 2-outerplanar graph has an induced outerplanar graph on at least two-thirds of its vertices.

A better bound on the largest induced forests in triangle-free planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that there exists a triangle-free planar graph of $n$ verticess such that the largest induced forest has size at most $\frac{5n}{8}$. Salavatipour proved that there is a forest of size at least $\frac{5n}{9.41}$ in any triangle-free planar graph of $n$ vertices. Dross, Montassier and Pinlou improved Salavatipour's bound to $\frac{5n}{9.17}$. In this work, we further improve the bound to $\frac{5n}{9}$. Our technique is inspired by the recent ideas from Lukot'ka, Maz{á}k and Zhu.
