Biregular bipartite labeled multigraphs and perfect matchings in bipartite tensor products
In 2019, P. Higgins formulated [1] a question about bipartite graphs (see Conjecture 1 below); this question arises in the study of regular finite semigroups. F. V. Petrov formulated [2] another combinatorial conjecture (Conjecture 3); Conjecture 3 implies Conjecture 1 and seems simple itself. However, both conjectures remain unproven in the general case. In the present paper, some special cases are proved, Conjecture 4 is formulated in the same spirit, and some of its special cases are proved. In addition, Conjecture 1 is reduced to a matrix inequality (Conjecture 5); this inequality is, in turn, also proved in a special case.
On forest and bipartite cuts in sparse graphs
The paper is devoted to sufficient conditions for the existence of vertex cuts in simple graphs, where the induced subgraph on the cut vertices belongs to a specified graph class. In particular, we show that any connected graph with $n$ vertices and fewer than $(19n - 28)/8$ edges admits a forest cut. This result improves upon recent bounds, although it does not resolve the conjecture that the sharp threshold is $3n - 6$ (Chernyshev, Rauch, Rautenbach, 2024). Furthermore, we prove that if the number of edges is less than $(80n-134)/31$, then the graph admits a bipartite cut.

Algebraic proofs of linear versions of the Conway--Gordon--Sachs theorem and the van Kampen--Flores theorem
In this paper we present short algebraic proofs of the Linear Conway--Gordon--Sachs and the Linear van Kampen--Flores theorems in the spirit of the Radon theorem on convex hulls. {\bf Theorem.} {\it Take any $n+3$ general position points in $\mathbb{R}^n$. If $n$ is odd, then there are two linked $(n+1)/2$-simplices with the vertices at these points. If $n$ is even, then one can choose two disjoint $(n+2)/2$-tuples such that the interiors $(n/2)$-simplices with the vertices at these $(n+2)/2$-tuples intersect each other.} This theorem is interesting even in case of small dimensions.

Number of vertices in graphs with locally small chromatic number and large chromatic number
We discuss the minimal number of vertices in a graph with a large chromatic number such that each ball of a fixed radius in it has a small chromatic number. It is shown that for every graph $G$ on $\sim((n+rc)/(c+rc))^{r+1}$ vertices such that each ball of radius $r$ is properly $c$-colorable, we have $χ(G)\leq n$.

Examples of topologically highly chromatic graphs with locally small chromatic number
Kierstead, Szemerédi, and Trotter showed that a graph with at most $\lfloor r/(2n)\rfloor^n$ vertices such that each ball of radius $r$ in it is $c$-colorable should have chromatic number at most $n(c-1)+1$. We show that this estimate is sharp in $r$. Namely, for every $n$, $r$, and $c$ we construct a graph $G$ containing $O((2rc)^{n-1}c)$ vertices such that $χ(G)\geq n(c-1)+1$, although each ball of radius $r$ in $G$ is $c$-colorable. The core idea is the construction of a graph whose neighborhood complex is homotopy equivalent to the join of neighborhood complexes of two given graphs.

The maximal length of the period of a periodic word defined by restrictions
We determine the maximal length of the period of a periodic word defined by $n$ restrictions. It happens to be the corresponding Fibonacci number.

Finding a subset of nonnegative vectors with a coordinatewise large sum
Published in Discrete Math. 313 (2013), pp. 622--625 • View PublicationBIB
Given a rational $a=p/q$ and $N$ nonnegative $d$-dimensional real vectors $u_1$, ..., $u_N$, we show that it is always possible to choose $(d-1)+\lceil (pN-d+1)/q\rceil$ of them such that their sum is (componentwise) at least $(p/q)(u_1+...+u_N)$. For fixed $d$ and $a$, this bound is sharp if $N$ is large enough. The method of the proof uses Carathéodory's theorem from linear programming.

Simple Modules of Exceptional Groups with Normal Closures of Maximal Torus Orbits
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be an exceptional simple algebraic group, and let T be a maximal torus in G. In this paper, for every such G, we find all simple rational G-modules V with the following property: for every vector v in V, the closure of its T-orbit is a normal affine variety. For all G-modules without this property we present a T-orbit with the non-normal closure. To solve this problem, we use a combinatorial criterion of normality formulated in the terms of weights of a simple G-module. This paper continues two papers of the second author, where the same problem was solved for classical linear groups.
