The vector graph and the chromatic number of the plane, or how NOT to prove that $χ(\mathbb{E}^2)>4$
The chromatic number $χ\left(\mathcal{E^2}\right)$ of the plane is known to be some integer between 4 and 7, inclusive. We prove a limiting result that says, roughly, that one cannot increase the lower bound on $χ\left(\mathcal{E^2}\right)$ by pasting Moser Spindles together, even countably many.

Sum-free cyclic multi-bases and constructions of Ramsey algebras
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, (180), 2015, p. 204-212 • View PublicationBIB
Given $X\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_N$, $X$ is called a \emph{cyclic basis} if $(X+X)\cup X=\mathbb{Z}_N$, \emph{symmetric} if $x\in X$ implies $-x \in X$, and \emph{sum-free} if $(X+X)\cap X=\varnothing$. We ask, for which $m$, $N\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ can the set of non-identity elements of $\mathbb{Z}_N$ be partitioned into $m$ symmetric sum-free cyclic bases? If, in addition, we require that distinct cyclic bases interact in a certain way, we get a proper relation algebra called a Ramsey algebra. Ramsey algebras (which have also been called Monk algebras) have been constructed previously for $2\leq m\leq 7$. In this manuscript, we provide constructions of Ramsey algebras for every positive integer $m$ with $2\leq m\leq 400$, with the exception of $m=8$ and $m=13$.

On Radial Colorings of Annuli
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics, (60), 2014, p. 270-278 • Search Publication
We consider the chromatic numbers of unit-distance graphs of various annuli. In particular, we consider radial colorings, which are "nice" colorings, and completely determine the radial chromatic numbers of various annuli.

A new approach to the results of Kövari, Sós, and Turán concerning rectangle-free subsets of the grid
Published in Integers, 2012, Vol. 12, #A62 • Search Publication
For positive integers $m$ and $n$, define $f(m,n)$ to be the smallest integer such that any subset $A$ of the $m \times n$ integer grid with $|A| \geq f(m,n)$ contains a rectangle; that is, there are $x\in [m]$ and $y \in [n]$ and $d_{1},d_{2} \in \mathbb{Z}^{+}$ such that all four points $(x,y)$, $(x+d_{1},y)$, $(x,y+d_{2})$, and $(x+d_{1},y+d_{2})$ are contained in $A$. In \cite{kovarisosturan}, Kövari, Sós, and Turán showed that $\dlim_{k \to \infty}\dfrac{f(k,k)}{k^{3/2}} = 1$. They also showed that whenever $p$ is a prime number, $f(p^{2},p^{2}+p) = p^{2}(p+1)+1$. We recover their asymptotic result and strengthen the second, providing cleaner proofs which exploit a connection to projective planes, first noticed by Mendelsohn in \cite{mendelsohn87}. We also provide an explicit lower bound for $f(k,k)$ which holds for all $k$.

Three layer $Q_2$-free families in the Boolean lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the largest $Q_2$-free family of subsets of $[n]$ which contains sets of at most three different sizes has at most $(3 + 2\sqrt {3})N/3 + o(N) \approx 2.1547N + o(N)$ members, where $N = {n \choose {\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}}$. This improves an earlier bound of $2.207N + o(N)$ by Axenovich, Manske, and Martin.

$Q_2$-free families in the Boolean lattice
Published in Order 29(1) (2012), 177--191 • View PublicationBIB
For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of [n]=\{1, 2, ..., n} ordered by inclusion, and a partially ordered set P, we say that $\mathcal{F}$ is P-free if it does not contain a subposet isomorphic to P. Let $ex(n, P)$ be the largest size of a P-free family of subsets of [n]. Let $Q_2$ be the poset with distinct elements a, b, c, d, a<b, c<d; i.e., the 2-dimensional Boolean lattice. We show that $2N -o(N) \leq ex(n, Q_2)\leq 2.283261N +o(N), $ where $N = \binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$. We also prove that the largest $Q_2$-free family of subsets of [n] having at most three different sizes has at most 2.20711N members.
