Reuniting $χ$-boundedness with polynomial $χ$-boundedness
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 176:30-73, 2026 • View PublicationBIB
A class $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs is $χ$-bounded if there is a function $f$ such that $χ(H)\le f(ω(H))$ for all induced subgraphs $H$ of a graph in $\mathcal{F}$. If $f$ can be chosen to be a polynomial, we say that $\mathcal{F}$ is polynomially $χ$-bounded. Esperet proposed a conjecture that every $χ$-bounded class of graphs is polynomially $χ$-bounded. This conjecture has been disproved; it has been shown that there are classes of graphs that are $χ$-bounded but not polynomially $χ$-bounded. Nevertheless, inspired by Esperet's conjecture, we introduce Pollyanna classes of graphs. A class $\mathcal{C}$ of graphs is Pollyanna if $\mathcal{C}\cap \mathcal{F}$ is polynomially $χ$-bounded for every $χ$-bounded class $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs. We prove that several classes of graphs are Pollyanna and also present some proper classes of graphs that are not Pollyanna.

Chromatic number of spacetime
We observe that an old theorem of Graham implies that for any positive integer $s$, there exists some positive integer $T(s)$ such that every $s$-colouring of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ contains a monochromatic pair of points $(x,y),(x',y')$ with $(x-x')^2 - (y-y')^2 = (T(s))^2$. By scaling, this implies that every finite colouring of $\mathbb{Q}^2$ contains a monochromatic pair of points $(x,y),(x',y')$ with $(x-x')^2 - (y-y')^2 = 1$, which answers in a strong sense a problem of Kosheleva and Kreinovich on a pseudo-Euclidean analogue of the Hadwiger-Nelson problem. The proof of Graham's theorem relies on repeated applications of van der Waerden's theorem, and so the resulting function $T(s)$ grows extremely quickly. We give an alternative proof in the weaker setting of having a second spacial dimension that results in a significantly improved bound. To be more precise, we prove that for every positive integer $s$ with $r\equiv 2 \pmod{4}$, every $s$-colouring of $\mathbb{Z}^3$ contains a monochromatic pair of points $(x,y,z),(x',y',z')$ such that $(x-x')^2 + (y-y')^2 - (z-z')^2 = (5^{(s-2)/4}(8\cdot 5^{(s-2)/2})!)^2$. In fact, we prove a stronger density version. The density version in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ remains open.

Prime and polynomial distances in colourings of the plane
We give two extensions of the recent theorem of the first author that the odd distance graph has unbounded chromatic number. The first is that for any non-constant polynomial $f$ with integer coefficients and positive leading coefficient, every finite colouring of the plane contains a monochromatic pair of distinct points whose distance is equal to $f(n)$ for some integer $n$. The second is that for every finite colouring of the plane, there is a monochromatic pair of points whose distance is a prime number.

Pivot-minors and the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture
We prove a conjecture of Kim and Oum that every proper pivot-minor-closed class of graphs has the strong Erdős-Hajnal property. More precisely, for every graph $H$, there exists $ε> 0$ such that every $n$-vertex graph with no pivot-minor isomorphic to $H$ contains two sets $A, B$ of vertices such that $|A|, |B| \ge εn$ and $A$ is complete or anticomplete to $B$.

Separating polynomial $χ$-boundedness from $χ$-boundedness
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extending the idea from the recent paper by Carbonero, Hompe, Moore, and Spirkl, for every function $f\colon\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$ with $f(1)=1$ and $f(n)\geq\binom{3n+1}{3}$, we construct a hereditary class of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ such that the maximum chromatic number of a graph in $\mathcal{G}$ with clique number $n$ is equal to $f(n)$ for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$. In particular, we prove that there exist hereditary classes of graphs that are $χ$-bounded but not polynomially $χ$-bounded.
A solution to Ringel's circle problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct families of circles in the plane such that their tangency graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. This provides a strong negative answer to Ringel's circle problem (1959). The proof relies on a (multidimensional) version of Gallai's theorem with polynomial constraints, which we derive from the Hales-Jewett theorem and which may be of independent interest.
Grounded L-graphs are polynomially $χ$-bounded
Published • View PublicationBIB
A grounded L-graph is the intersection graph of a collection of "L" shapes whose topmost points belong to a common horizontal line. We prove that every grounded L-graph with clique number $ω$ has chromatic number at most $17ω^4$. This improves the doubly-exponential bound of McGuinness and generalizes the recent result that the class of circle graphs is polynomially $χ$-bounded. We also survey $χ$-boundedness problems for grounded geometric intersection graphs and give a high-level overview of recent techniques to obtain polynomial bounds.

Improved bounds for colouring circle graphs

We prove the first $χ$-bounding function for circle graphs that is optimal up to a constant factor. To be more precise, we prove that every circle graph with clique number at most $ω$ has chromatic number at most $2ω\log_2 (ω) +2ω\log_2(\log_2 (ω)) + 10ω$.

Triangle-free graphs with large chromatic number and no induced wheel
Published • View PublicationBIB
A wheel is a graph consisting of an induced cycle of length at least four and a single additional vertex with at least three neighbours on the cycle. We prove that no Burling graph contains an induced wheel. Burling graphs are triangle-free and have arbitrarily large chromatic number, so this answers a question of Trotignon and disproves a conjecture of Scott and Seymour.
Colouring polygon visibility graphs and their generalizations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Curve pseudo-visibility graphs generalize polygon and pseudo-polygon visibility graphs and form a hereditary class of graphs. We prove that every curve pseudo-visibility graph with clique number $ω$ has chromatic number at most $3\cdot 4^{ω-1}$. The proof is carried through in the setting of ordered graphs; we identify two conditions satisfied by every curve pseudo-visibility graph (considered as an ordered graph) and prove that they are sufficient for the claimed bound. The proof is algorithmic: both the clique number and a colouring with the claimed number of colours can be computed in polynomial time.

Locally Hamiltonian graphs and minimal size of maximal graphs on a surface
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every locally Hamiltonian graph with $n\ge 3$ vertices and possibly with multiple edges has at least $3n-6$ edges with equality if and only if it triangulates the sphere. As a consequence, every edge-maximal embedding of a graph $G$ graph on some 2-dimensional surface $Σ$ (not necessarily compact) has at least $3n-6$ edges with equality if and only if $G$ also triangulates the sphere. If, in addition, $G$ is simple, then for each vertex $v$, the cyclic ordering of the edges around $v$ on $Σ$ is the same as the clockwise or anti-clockwise orientation around $v$ on the sphere. If $G$ contains no complete graph on 4 vertices and has at least 4 vertices, then the face-boundaries are the same in the two embeddings.

Edge-maximal graphs on orientable and some non-orientable surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study edge-maximal, non-complete graphs on surfaces that do not triangulate the surface. We prove that there is no such graph on the projective plane $\mathbb{N}_1$, $K_7-e$ is the unique such graph on the Klein bottle $\mathbb{N}_2$ and $K_8-E(C_5)$ is the unique such graph on the torus $\mathbb{S}_1$. In contrast to this for each $g\ge 2$ we construct an infinite family of such graphs on the orientable surface $\mathbb{S}_g$ of genus $g$, that are $\lfloor \frac{g}{2} \rfloor$ edges short of a triangulation.
