Fourier dimension and spectral gaps for hyperbolic surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an essential spectral gap for a convex co-compact hyperbolic surface $M=Γ\backslash\mathbb H^2$ which depends only on the dimension $δ$ of the limit set. More precisely, we show that when $δ>0$ there exists $\varepsilon_0=\varepsilon_0(δ)>0$ such that the Selberg zeta function has only finitely many zeroes $s$ with $\Re s>δ-\varepsilon_0$. The proof uses the fractal uncertainty principle approach developed by Dyatlov-Zahl [arXiv:1504.06589]. The key new component is a Fourier decay bound for the Patterson-Sullivan measure, which may be of independent interest. This bound uses the fact that transformations in the group $Γ$ are nonlinear, together with estimates on exponential sums due to Bourgain which follow from the discretized sum-product theorem in $\mathbb R$.

Influential coalitions for Boolean Functions
We improve results of Kahn, Kalai, and Linial from the late 80s on the existence of influential large coalitions for Boolean functions, and we give counterexamples to conjectures (of Benny Chor and others) also from the late 80s, by exhibiting functions for which the influences of large coalitions are unexpectedly small relative to the expectations of the functions. The large gaps between the new upper and lower bounds leave a lot of room for further study.

The proof of the $l^2$ Decoupling Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the $l^2$ Decoupling Conjecture for compact hypersurfaces with positive definite second fundamental form and also for the cone. This has a wide range of important consequences. One of them is the validity of the Discrete Restriction Conjecture, which (up to $N^ε$ losses) implies the full range of expected $L^p_{x,t}$ Strichartz estimates for both classical and irrational tori. Another one is an improvement in the range for the discrete restriction theory for lattice points on the sphere. Various applications in Additive Combinatorics, Incidence Geometry and Number Theory are also discussed. Our argument relies on the interplay between linear and multilinear restriction theory.

A Spectral Gap Theorem in $SU(d)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish the spectral gap property for dense subgroups of $SU(d)$ ($d\geq 2$), generated by finitely many elements with algebraic entries; this result was announced in [BG3]. The method of proof differs, in several crucial aspects, from that used in [BG] in the case of SU(2).

Monotone expansion
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work, following the outline set in [B2], presents an explicit construction of a family of monotone expanders. The family is essentially defined by the Mobius action of SL_2(R) on the real line. For the proof, we show a product-growth theorem for SL_2(R).

Expansion in SL_d(Z/qZ), q arbitrary

Let S be a fixed finite symmetric subset of SL_d(Z), and assume that it generates a Zariski-dense subgroup G. We show that the Cayley graphs of pi_q(G) with respect to the generating set pi_q(S) form a family of expanders, where pi_q is the projection map Z->Z/qZ.

On the singularity probability of discrete random matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $M_n$ be an $n$ by $n$ random matrix where each entry is +1 or -1 independently with probability 1/2. Our main result implies that the probability that $M_n$ is singular is at most $(1/\sqrt{2} + o(1))^n$, improving on the previous best upper bound of $(3/4 + o(1))^n$ proven by Tao and Vu in arXiv:math/0501313v2. This paper follows a similar approach to the Tao and Vu result, including using a variant of their structure theorem. We also extend this type of exponential upper bound on the probability that a random matrix is singular to a large class of discrete random matrices taking values in the complex numbers, where the entries are independent but are not necessarily identically distributed.

On the size of $k$-fold sum and product sets of integers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the following theorem: for all positive integers $b$ there exists a positive integer $k$, such that for every finite set $A$ of integers with cardinality $|A| > 1$, we have either $$ |A + ... + A| \geq |A|^b$$ or $$ |A \cdot ... \cdot A| \geq |A|^b$$ where $A + ... + A$ and $A \cdot ... \cdot A$ are the collections of $k$-fold sums and products of elements of $A$ respectively. This is progress towards a conjecture of Erdös and Szemerédi on sum and product sets.

A sum-product estimate in finite fields, and applications
Published in Geom. Func. Anal. 14 (2004), 27-57 • View PublicationBIB
Let $A$ be a subset of a finite field $F := \Z/q\Z$ for some prime $q$. If $|F|^δ< |A| < |F|^{1-δ}$ for some $δ> 0$, then we prove the estimate $|A+A| + |A.A| \geq c(δ) |A|^{1+\eps}$ for some $\eps = \eps(δ) > 0$. This is a finite field analogue of a result of Erdos and Szemeredi. We then use this estimate to prove a Szemeredi-Trotter type theorem in finite fields, and obtain a new estimate for the Erdos distance problem in finite fields, as well as the three-dimensional Kakeya problem in finite fields.
