Placement Delivery Arrays from Combinations of Strong Edge Colorings
Published • View PublicationBIB
It has recently been pointed out in both of the works [C. Shanguan, Y. Zhang, and G. Ge, {\em IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory}, 64(8):5755-5766 (2018)] and [Q. Yan, X. Tang, Q. Chen, and M. Cheng, {\em IEEE Commun. Lett.}, 22(2):236-239 (2018)] that placement delivery arrays (PDAs), as coined in [Q. Yan, M. Cheng, X. Tang, and Q. Chen, {\em IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory}, 63(9):5821-5833 (2017)], are equivalent to strong edge colorings of bipartite graphs. In this paper we consider various methods of combining two or more strong edge colorings of bipartite graphs to obtain new ones, and therefore new PDAs. Combining PDAs in certain ways also gives a framework for obtaining PDAs with more robust and flexible parameters. We investigate how the parameters of certain strong edge colorings change after being combined with others and, after comparing the parameters of the resulting PDAs with those of the initial ones, find that subpacketization levels thusly can often be improved.

Partial Geometric Designs from Group Actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, using group actions, we introduce a new method for constructing partial geometric designs (sometimes referred to as $1\frac{1}{2}$-designs). Using this new method, we construct several infinite families of partial geometric designs by investigating the actions of various linear groups of degree two on certain subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{2}$. Moreover, by computing the stabilizers of such subsets in various linear groups of degree two, we are also able to construct a new infinite family of balanced incomplete block designs.

Almost Designs and Their Links with Balanced Incomplete Block Designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Almost designs ($t$-adesigns) were proposed and discussed by Ding as a certain generalization of combinatorial designs related to almost difference sets. Unlike $t$-designs, it is not clear whether $t$-adesigns need also be $(t-1)$-designs or $(t-1)$-adesigns. In this paper we discuss a particular class of 3-adesigns, i.e., 3-adesigns coming from certain strongly regular graphs and tournaments, and find that these are also $2$-designs. We construct several classes of these, and discuss some of the restrictions on the parameters of such a class. We also construct several new classes of 2-adesigns, and discuss some of their properties as well.

Almost Difference Sets in Nonabelian Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give two new constructions of almost difference sets. The first is a generic construction of $(q^{2}(q+1),q(q^{2}-1),q(q^{2}-q-1),q^{2}-1)$ almost difference sets in certain groups of order $q^{2}(q+1)$ ($q$ is an odd prime power) having ($\mathbb{F}_{q},+)$ as a subgroup. The construction occurs in any group of order $p^{2}(p+1)$ ($p$ is an odd prime) having ($\mathbb{F}_{p^{2}},+)$ as an additive subgroup. This construction yields several infinite families of almost difference sets, many of which occur in nonabelian groups. The second construction yields $(4p,2p+1,p,p-1)$ almost difference sets in dihedral groups of order $4p$ where $p\equiv 3 \ ({\rm mod} \ 4)$ is a prime. Moreover, it turns out that some of the infinite families of almost difference sets obtained have Cayley graphs which are Ramanujan graphs. \keywords{Difference set \and Almost difference set \and Nonabelian group}

Some New Balanced and Almost Balanced Quaternary Sequences with Low Autocorrelation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Quaternary sequences of both even and odd period having low autocorrelation are studied. We construct new families of balanced quaternary sequences of odd period and low autocorrelation using cyclotomic classes of order eight, as well as investigate the linear complexity of some known quaternary sequences of odd period. We discuss a construction given by Chung et al. in "New Quaternary Sequences with Even Period and Three-Valued Autocorrelation" [IEICE Trans. Fundamentals Vol. E93-A, No. 1 (2010)] first by pointing out a slight modification (thereby obtaining new families of balanced and almost balanced quaternary sequences of even period and low autocorrelation), then by showing that, in certain cases, this slight modification greatly simplifies the construction given by Shen et al. in "New Families of Balanced Quaternary Sequences of Even Period with Three-level Optimal Autocorrelation" [IEEE Comm. Letters DOI10.1109/LCOMM.2017.26611750 (2017)]. We investigate the linear complexity of these sequences as well.

Experimental Constructions of Binary Matrices with Good Peak-Sidelobe Distances
Published • View PublicationBIB
Skirlo et al., in 'Binary matrices of optimal autocorrelations as alignment marks' [Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology Series B 33(2) (2015) 1-7], defined a new class of binary matrices by maximizing the peak-sidelobe distances in the aperiodic autocorrelations and, by exhaustive computer searches, found the optimal square matrices of dimension up to 7 x 7, and optimal diagonally symmetric matrices of dimensions 8 x 8 and 9 x 9. We make an initial investigation into and propose a strategy for (deterministically) constructing binary matrices with good peak-sidelobe distances. We construct several classes of these and compare their distances to those of the optimal matrices found by Skirlo et al. Our constructions produce matrices that are near optimal for small dimension. Furthermore, we formulate a tight upper bound on the peak-sidelobe distance of a cer- tain class of circulant matrices. Interestingly, binary matrices corresponding to certain difference sets and almost difference sets have peak-sidelobe distances meeting this upper bound.

New Partial Geometric Difference Sets and Partial Geometric Difference Families
Published • View PublicationBIB
Olmez, in "Symmetric $1\frac{1}{2}$-Designs and $1\frac{1}{2}$-Difference Sets" (2014), introduced the concept of a partial geometric difference set (also referred to as a $1\frac{1}{2}$-design), and showed that partial geometric difference sets give partial geometric designs. Nowak et al., in "Partial Geometric Difference Families" (2014), introduced the concept of a partial difference family, and showed that these also give partial geometric designs. It was shown by Brouwer et al. in "Directed strongly regular graphs from $1\frac{1}{2}$-designs" (2012) that directed strongly regular graphs can be obtained from partial geometric designs. In this correspondence we construct several families of partial geometric difference sets and partial difference families with new parameters, thereby giving directed strongly regular graphs with new parameters. We also discuss some of the links between partially balanced designs, $2$-adesigns (which were recently coined by Cunsheng Ding in "Codes from Difference Sets" (2015)), and partial geometric designs, and make an investigation into when a $2$-adesign is partial geometric.

Notes on Various Methods for Constructing Directed Strongly Regular Graphs
Duval, in "A Directed Graph Version of Strongly Regular Graphs" [{\it Journal of Combinatorial Theory}, Series A 47 (1988) 71 - 100], introduced the concept of directed strongly regular graphs. In this paper we construct several rich families of directed strongly regular graphs with new parameters. Our constructions yielding new parameters are based on extending known explicit constructions to cover more parameter sets. We also explore some of the links between Cayley graphs, block matrices and directed strongly regular graphs with certain parameters. Directed strongly regular graphs which are also Cayley graphs are interesting due to their having more algebraic structure. We construct directed strongly regular Cayley graphs with parameters $((m+1)s,ls,ld,ld-d,ld)$ where $d,l$ and $s$ are integers with $dm=ls$ and $1\leq l<m$. We also give a new block matrix characterization for directed strongly regular graphs with parameters $(m(dm+1),dm,m,m-1,m)$, which were first dicussed by Duval et al. in "Semidirect Product Constructions of Directed Strongly Regular Graphs" [{\it Journal of Combinatorial Theory}, Series A 104 (2003) 157 - 167].

A Generalization of Combinatorial Designs Related to Almost Difference Sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study a certain generalization of combinatorial designs related to almost difference sets, namely the $t$-adesign, which was coined by Cunsheng Ding in 2015. It is clear that $2$-adesigns are a kind of partially balanced incomplete block design which naturally arise in many combinatorial and statistical problems. We discuss some of their basic properties and give several constructions of $2$-adesigns (some of which correspond to new almost difference sets, and others of which correspond to new almost difference families), as well as two constructions of $3$-adesigns. We also discuss some basic properties of their incidence matrices and codes.
