SASH: Decoding Community Structure in Graphs
Detection of communities in a graph entails identifying clusters of densely connected vertices; the area has a variety of important applications and a rich literature. The problem has previously been situated in the realm of error correcting codes by viewing a graph as a noisy version of the assumed underlying communities. In this paper, we introduce an encoding of community structure along with the resulting code's parameters. We then present a novel algorithm, SASH, to decode to estimated communities given an observed dataset. We demonstrate the performance of SASH via simulations on an assortative planted partition model and on the Zachary's Karate Club dataset.
Community Detection in Hypergraphs via Mutual Information Maximization
The hypergraph community detection problem seeks to identify groups of related nodes in hypergraph data. We propose an information-theoretic hypergraph community detection algorithm which compresses the observed data in terms of community labels and community-edge intersections. This algorithm can also be viewed as maximum-likelihood inference in a degree-corrected microcanonical stochastic blockmodel. We perform the inference/compression step via simulated annealing. Unlike several recent algorithms based on canonical models, our microcanonical algorithm does not require inference of statistical parameters such as node degrees or pairwise group connection rates. Through synthetic experiments, we find that our algorithm succeeds down to recently-conjectured thresholds for sparse random hypergraphs. We also find competitive performance in cluster recovery tasks on several hypergraph data sets.
Hunting Rabbits on the Hypercube

We explore the Hunters and Rabbits game on the hypercube. In the process, we find the solution for all classes of graphs with an isoperimetric nesting property and find the exact hunter number of $Q^n$ to be $1+\sum\limits_{i=0}^{n-2} \binom{i}{\lfloor i/2 \rfloor}$. In addition, we extend results to the situation where we allow the rabbit to not move between shots.
