A New [Combinatorial] Proof of the Commutativity of Matching Polynomials for Cycles
We prove some functional equations involving the (classical) matching polynomials of path and cycle graphs and the $d$-matching polynomial of a cycle graph. A matching in a (finite) graph $G$ is a subset of edges no two of which share a vertex, and the matching polynomial of $G$ is a generating function encoding the numbers of matchings in $G$ of each size. The $d$-matching polynomial is a weighted average of matching polynomials of degree-$d$ covers, and was introduced in a paper of Hall, Puder, and Sawin. Let $\mathcal{C}_n$ and $\mathcal{P}_n$ denote the respective matching polynomials of the cycle and path graphs on $n$ vertices, and let $\mathcal{C}_{n,d}$ denote the $d$-matching polynomial of the cycle $C_n$. We give a purely combinatorial proof that $\mathcal{C}_k (\mathcal{C}_n (x)) = \mathcal{C}_{kn} (x)$ en route to proving a conjecture made by Hall: that $\mathcal{C}_{n,d} (x) = \mathcal{P}_d (\mathcal{C}_n (x))$.
Maximizing Cliques in Shellable Clique Complexes
In extremal graph theory, the problem of finding the elements of a given class of graphs which contain the most cliques traces its routes back to Turán's famous theorem. We consider the implications of the connectivity property of simplicial complexes known as shellability on clique complexes associated with graphs. In this paper, we find the graphs which maximize cliques among all graphs on $n$ vertices with $Δ(G)\leq r$ that have shellable clique complexes.

We explore the Hunters and Rabbits game on the hypercube. In the process, we find the solution for all classes of graphs with an isoperimetric nesting property and find the exact hunter number of $Q^n$ to be $1+\sum\limits_{i=0}^{n-2} \binom{i}{\lfloor i/2 \rfloor}$. In addition, we extend results to the situation where we allow the rabbit to not move between shots.

Chen, Kitaev, Mütze, and Sun recently introduced the notion of universal partial words, a generalization of universal words and de Bruijn sequences. Universal partial words allow for a wild-card character $\diamond$, which is a placeholder for any letter in the alphabet. We settle and strengthen conjectures posed in the same paper where this notion was introduced. For non-binary alphabets, we show that universal partial words have periodic $\diamond$ structure and are cyclic, and we give number-theoretic conditions on the existence of universal partial words. In addition, we provide an explicit construction for a family of universal partial words over alphabets of even size.
