Conflict-free connection of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the conflict-free connection coloring of trees, which is also the conflict-free coloring of the so-called edge-path hypergraphs of trees. We first prove that for a tree $T$ of order $n$, $cfc(T)\geq cfc(P_n)=\lceil \log_{2} n\rceil$, which completely confirms the conjecture of Li and Wu. We then present a sharp upper bound for the conflict-free connection number of trees by a simple algorithm. Furthermore, we show that the conflict-free connection number of the binomial tree with $2^{k-1}$ vertices is $k-1$. At last, we study trees which are $cfc$-critical, and prove that if a tree $T$ is $cfc$-critical, then the conflict-free connection coloring of $T$ is equivalent to the edge ranking of $T$.

Tight Nordhaus-Gaddum-type upper bound for total-rainbow connection number of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is said to be \emph{total-colored} if all the edges and the vertices of the graph are colored. A total-colored graph is \emph{total-rainbow connected} if any two vertices of the graph are connected by a path whose edges and internal vertices have distinct colors. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{total-rainbow connection number} of $G$, denoted by $trc(G)$, is the minimum number of colors required in a total-coloring of $G$ to make $G$ total-rainbow connected. In this paper, we first characterize the graphs having large total-rainbow connection numbers. Based on this, we obtain a Nordhaus-Gaddum-type upper bound for the total-rainbow connection number. We prove that if $G$ and $\overline{G}$ are connected complementary graphs on $n$ vertices, then $trc(G)+trc(\overline{G})\leq 2n$ when $n\geq 6$ and $trc(G)+trc(\overline{G})\leq 2n+1$ when $n=5$. Examples are given to show that the upper bounds are sharp for $n\geq 5$. This completely solves a conjecture in [Y. Ma, Total rainbow connection number and complementary graph, Results in Mathematics 70(1-2)(2016), 173-182].

Nordhaus-Gaddum-type theorem for total proper connection number of graphs

A graph is said to be \emph{total-colored} if all the edges and the vertices of the graph are colored. A path $P$ in a total-colored graph $G$ is called a \emph{total-proper path} if $(i)$ any two adjacent edges of $P$ are assigned distinct colors; $(ii)$ any two adjacent internal vertices of $P$ are assigned distinct colors; $(iii)$ any internal vertex of $P$ is assigned a distinct color from its incident edges of $P$. The total-colored graph $G$ is \emph{total-proper connected} if any two distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by a total-proper path. The \emph{total-proper connection number} of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $tpc(G)$, is the minimum number of colors that are required to make $G$ total-proper connected. In this paper, we first characterize the graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices with $tpc(G)=n-1$. Based on this, we obtain a Nordhaus-Gaddum-type result for total-proper connection number. We prove that if $G$ and $\overline{G}$ are connected complementary graphs on $n$ vertices, then $6\leq tpc(G)+tpc(\overline{G})\leq n+2$. Examples are given to show that the lower bound is sharp for $n\geq 4$. The upper bound is reached for $n\geq 5$ if and only if $G$ or $\overline{G}$ is the tree with maximum degree $n-2$.

3-Rainbow index and forbidden subgraphs

A tree in an edge-colored connected graph $G$ is called \emph{a rainbow tree} if no two edges of it are assigned the same color. For a vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$, a tree is called an \emph{$S$-tree} if it connects $S$ in $G$. A \emph{$k$-rainbow coloring} of $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ having the property that for every set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exists a rainbow $S$-tree in $G$. The minimum number of colors that are needed in a $k$-rainbow coloring of $G$ is the \emph{$k$-rainbow index} of $G$, denoted by $rx_k(G)$. The \emph{Steiner distance $d(S)$} of a set $S$ of vertices of $G$ is the minimum size of an $S$-tree $T$. The \emph{$k$-Steiner diameter $sdiam_k(G)$} of $G$ is defined as the maximum Steiner distance of $S$ among all sets $S$ with $k$ vertices of $G$. In this paper, we focus on the 3-rainbow index of graphs and find all finite families $\mathcal{F}$ of connected graphs, for which there is a constant $C_\mathcal{F}$ such that, for every connected $\mathcal{F}$-free graph $G$, $rx_3(G)\leq sdiam_3(G)+C_\mathcal{F}$.

The $k$-proper index of complete bipartite and complete multipartite graphs
Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected graph of order $n$ with an edge-coloring $c:E(G)\rightarrow\{1,2,\dots,t\}$,$t\in\mathbb{N}$, where adjacent edges may be colored with the same color. A tree $T$ in $G$ is a \emph{proper tree} if no two adjacent edges of it are assigned the same color. Let $k$ be a fixed integer with $2\leq k\leq n$. For a vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|\geq 2$, a tree is called an \emph{$S$-tree} if it connects $S$ in $G$ . A \emph{$k$-proper coloring} of $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ having the property that for every set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exists a proper $S$-tree $T$ in $G$. The minimum number of colors that are needed in a $k$-proper coloring of $G$ is defined as the \emph{$k$-proper index} of $G$, denoted by $px_k(G)$. In this paper, we determine the 3-proper index of all complete bipartite and complete multipartite graphs and partially determine the $k$-proper index of them for $k\geq 4$.

Rainbow vertex-connection and forbidden subgraphs

A path in a vertex-colored graph is called \emph{vertex-rainbow} if its internal vertices have pairwise distinct colors. A graph $G$ is \emph{rainbow vertex-connected} if for any two distinct vertices of $G$, there is a vertex-rainbow path connecting them. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{rainbow vertex-connection number} of $G$, denoted by $rvc(G)$, is defined as the minimum number of colors that are required to make $G$ rainbow vertex-connected. In this paper, we find all the families $\mathcal{F}$ of connected graphs with $|\mathcal{F}|\in\{1,2\}$, for which there is a constant $k_\mathcal{F}$ such that, for every connected $\mathcal{F}$-free graph $G$, $rvc(G)\leq diam(G)+k_\mathcal{F}$, where $diam(G)$ is the diameter of $G$.
