Hyperbolic symmetric rigidity and intrinsic surface geometry
We develop a theory of symmetric infinitesimal rigidity for bar-joint frameworks in the hyperbolic plane, where symmetry is given by a Fuchsian group acting by isometries. Using the language of gain graphs and the orbit rigidity matrix, we reduce rigidity questions for infinite symmetric frameworks in the upper-half plane H to finite combinatorial conditions. Our main result provides a combinatorial characterisation of the infinitesimal rigidity for Gamma-symmetric frameworks, which are as generic as possibly allowed by the symmetry, when Gamma is a surface group. Namely, we show that a Gamma-gain graph is Gamma-isostatic if and only if it satisfies certain matroidal sparsity conditions. In particular, if Gamma is not cyclic then the appropriate combinatorial condition is (2,3,1,0)-gain tightness. Via the correspondence between Gamma-symmetric frameworks in H and finite frameworks on the quotient surface H/Gamma, this yields a characterisation of infinitesimal rigidity for frameworks on compact Riemann surfaces of genus at least 2.
Homological methods in rigidity theory using graphs of groups
In recent work, Stokes and Vermant considered graph-of-groups realisations of hypergraphs as a new description of rigidity-theoretic problems. In this paper, we show that the infinitesimal aspects of graph-of-groups realisations can be analysed using cellular sheaves and their cohomology. Using these tools, we give an algebraic condition for Henneberg moves to preserve independence, and we prove that the infinitesimal rigidity and flexibility of certain graph-of-groups realisations are generic properties. We use these results to show that whenever a rigidity-theoretic problem is defined in a real algebraic group $G$ using a $1$-dimensional connected subgroup $H$ with $N_{G}(H)/H$ finite, then the so-called Maxwell-count leads to a necessary and sufficient condition for minimal rigidity, generalising various known results in the literature.
Cayley Incidence Graphs
Evra, Feigon, Maurischat, and Parzanchevski (2023) introduced a biregular extension of Cayley graphs. In this paper, we reformulate their definition and provide some basic properties. We also show how these Cayley incidence graphs relate to various notions of Cayley hypergraphs. We further establish connections between Cayley incidence graphs and certain geometric and combinatorial structures, including coset geometries, difference sets and cages.
Sparse Incidence Geometries and Pebble Game Algorithms
We generalize a sparsity condition for hypergraphs and show a result relating sparseness of hypergraphs to the decomposition of a modified incidence graph into edge-disjoint spanning forests. We also give new sparsity conditions for posets, and define an algorithm of pebble game type for recognising this sparsity.
Structural rigidity and flexibility using graphs of groups
In structural rigidity, one studies frameworks of bars and joints in Euclidean space. Such a framework is an articulated structure consisting of rigid bars, joined together at joints around which the bars may rotate. In this paper, we will describe articulated motions of realisations of hypergraphs that uses the terminology of graph of groups, and describe the motions of such a framework using group theory. Our approach allows to model a variety of situations, such as parallel redrawings, scenes, polytopes, realisations of graphs on surfaces, and even unique colourability of graphs. This approach allows a concise description of various dualities in rigidity theory. We also provide a lower bound on the dimension of the infinitesimal motions of such a framework in the special case when the underlying group is a Lie group.
