Differential transcendence & algebraicity criteria for the series counting weighted quadrant walks

We consider weighted small step walks in the positive quadrant, and provide algebraicity and differential transcendence results for the underlying generating functions: we prove that depending on the probabilities of allowed steps, certain of the generating functions are algebraic over the field of rational functions, while some others do not satisfy any algebraic differential equation with rational function coefficients. Our techniques involve differential Galois theory for difference equations as well as complex analysis (Weierstrass parameterization of elliptic curves). We also extend to the weighted case many key intermediate results, as a theorem of analytic continuation of the generating functions.
Counting quadrant walks via Tutte's invariant method

In the 1970s, William Tutte developed a clever algebraic approach, based on certain "invariants", to solve a functional equation that arises in the enumeration of properly colored triangulations. The enumeration of plane lattice walks confined to the first quadrant is governed by similar equations, and has led in the past 20 years to a rich collection of attractive results dealing with the nature (algebraic, D-finite or not) of the associated generating function, depending on the set of allowed steps, taken in $\{-1, 0,1\}^2$. We first adapt Tutte's approach to prove (or reprove) the algebraicity of all quadrant models known or conjectured to be algebraic. This includes Gessel's famous model, and the first proof ever found for one model with weighted steps. To be applicable, the method requires the existence of two rational functions called invariant and decoupling function respectively. When they exist, algebraicity follows almost automatically. Then, we move to a complex analytic viewpoint that has already proved very powerful, leading in particular to integral expressions for the generating function in the non-D-finite cases, as well as to proofs of non-D-finiteness. We develop in this context a weaker notion of invariant. Now all quadrant models have invariants, and for those that have in addition a decoupling function, we obtain integral-free expressions for the generating function, and a proof that this series is D-algebraic (that is, satisfies polynomial differential equations).
Weighted Lattice Walks and Universality Classes

In this work we consider two different aspects of weighted walks in cones. To begin we examine a particular weighted model, known as the Gouyou-Beauchamps model. Using the theory of analytic combinatorics in several variables we obtain the asymptotic expansion of the total number of Gouyou-Beauchamps walks confined to the quarter plane. Our formulas are parametrized by weights and starting point, and we identify six different asymptotic regimes (called universality classes) which arise according to the values of the weights. The weights allowed in this model satisfy natural algebraic identities permitting an expression of the weighted generating function in terms of the generating function of unweighted walks on the same steps. The second part of this article explains these identities combinatorially for walks in arbitrary cones and dimensions, and provides a characterization of universality classes for general weighted walks. Furthermore, we describe an infinite set of models with non-D-finite generating function.

About a possible analytic approach for walks in the quarter plane with arbitrary big jumps

In this note, we consider random walks in the quarter plane with arbitrary big jumps. We announce the extension to that class of models of the analytic approach of [G. Fayolle, R. Iasnogorodski, and V. Malyshev, Random walks in the quarter plane, Springer-Verlag, Berlin (1999)], initially valid for walks with small steps in the quarter plane. New technical challenges arise, most of them being tackled in the framework of generalized boundary value problems on compact Riemann surfaces.

A human proof of Gessel's lattice path conjecture

Gessel walks are lattice paths confined to the quarter plane that start at the origin and consist of unit steps going either West, East, South-West or North-East. In 2001, Ira Gessel conjectured a nice closed-form expression for the number of Gessel walks ending at the origin. In 2008, Kauers, Koutschan and Zeilberger gave a computer-aided proof of this conjecture. The same year, Bostan and Kauers showed, again using computer algebra tools, that the complete generating function of Gessel walks is algebraic. In this article we propose the first "human proofs" of these results. They are derived from a new expression for the generating function of Gessel walks in terms of Weierstrass zeta functions.

New steps in walks with small steps in the quarter plane

In this article we obtain new expressions for the generating functions counting (non-singular) walks with small steps in the quarter plane. Those are given in terms of infinite series, while in the literature, the standard expressions use solutions to boundary value problems. We illustrate our results with three examples (an algebraic case, a transcendental D-finite case, and an infinite group model).

On the exit time from a cone for random walks with drift

We compute the exponential decay of the probability that a given multi-dimensional random walk stays in a convex cone up to time $n$, as $n$ goes to infinity. We show that the latter equals the minimum, on the dual cone, of the Laplace transform of the random walk increments. As an example, our results find applications in the counting of walks in orthants, a classical domain in enumerative combinatorics.

Random walks in the quarter plane, discrete harmonic functions and conformal mappings

We propose a new approach for finding discrete harmonic functions in the quarter plane with Dirichlet conditions. It is based on solving functional equations that are satisfied by the generating functions of the values taken by the harmonic functions. As a first application of our results, we obtain a simple expression for the harmonic function that governs the asymptotic tail distribution of the first exit time for random walks from the quarter plane. As another corollary, we prove, in the zero drift case, the uniqueness of the discrete harmonic function.

Non-D-finite excursions in the quarter plane

The number of excursions (finite paths starting and ending at the origin) having a given number of steps and obeying various geometric constraints is a classical topic of combinatorics and probability theory. We prove that the sequence $(e^{\mathfrak{S}}_n)_{n\geq 0}$ of numbers of excursions in the quarter plane corresponding to a nonsingular step set $\mathfrak{S} \subseteq \{0,\pm 1 \}^2$ with infinite group does not satisfy any nontrivial linear recurrence with polynomial coefficients. Accordingly, in those cases, the trivariate generating function of the numbers of walks with given length and prescribed ending point is not D-finite. Moreover, we display the asymptotics of $e^{\mathfrak{S}}_n$.

On the functions counting walks with small steps in the quarter plane

Models of spatially homogeneous walks in the quarter plane ${\bf Z}_+^{2}$ with steps taken from a subset $\mathcal{S}$ of the set of jumps to the eight nearest neighbors are considered. The generating function $(x,y,z)\mapsto Q(x,y;z)$ of the numbers $q(i,j;n)$ of such walks starting at the origin and ending at $(i,j) \in {\bf Z}_+^{2}$ after $n$ steps is studied. For all non-singular models of walks, the functions $x \mapsto Q(x,0;z)$ and $y\mapsto Q(0,y;z)$ are continued as multi-valued functions on ${\bf C}$ having infinitely many meromorphic branches, of which the set of poles is identified. The nature of these functions is derived from this result: namely, for all the 51 walks which admit a certain infinite group of birational transformations of ${\bf C}^2$, the interval $]0,1/|\mathcal{S}|[$ of variation of $z$ splits into two dense subsets such that the functions $x \mapsto Q(x,0;z)$ and $y\mapsto Q(0,y;z)$ are shown to be holonomic for any $z$ from the one of them and non-holonomic for any $z$ from the other. This entails the non-holonomy of $(x,y,z)\mapsto Q(x,y;z)$, and therefore proves a conjecture of Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna.
The compensation approach for walks with small steps in the quarter plane

This paper is the first application of the compensation approach to counting problems. We discuss how this method can be applied to a general class of walks in the quarter plane $Z_{+}^{2}$ with a step set that is a subset of $\{(-1,1),(-1,0),(-1,-1),(0,-1),(1,-1)\}$ in the interior of $Z_{+}^{2}$. We derive an explicit expression for the counting generating function, which turns out to be meromorphic and nonholonomic, can be easily inverted, and can be used to obtain asymptotic expressions for the counting coefficients.

Counting walks in a quadrant: a unified approach via boundary value problems

The aim of this article is to introduce a unified method to obtain explicit integral representations of the trivariate generating function counting the walks with small steps which are confined to a quarter plane. For many models, this yields for the first time an explicit expression of the counting generating function. Moreover, the nature of the integrand of the integral formulations is shown to be directly dependent on the finiteness of a naturally attached group of birational transformations as well as on the sign of the covariance of the walk

Explicit expression for the generating function counting Gessel's walks

Gessel's walks are the planar walks that move within the positive quadrant $\mathbb{Z}_{+}^{2}$ by unit steps in any of the following directions: West, North-East, East and South-West. In this paper, we find an explicit expression for the trivariate generating function counting the Gessel's walks with $k\geq 0$ steps, which start at $(0,0)$ and end at a given point $(i,j) \in \mathbb{Z}^2_+$.
