A tale of two $q$-deformations : connecting dual polar spaces and weighted hypercubes
Two $q$-analogs of the hypercube graph are introduced and shown to be related through a graph quotient. The roles of the subspace lattice graph, of a twisted primitive elements of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(2))$ and of the dual $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials are elaborated upon. This paper is dedicated to Tom Koornwinder.
Bivariate $P$- and $Q$-polynomial structures of the association schemes based on attenuated spaces
The bivariate $P$- and $Q$-polynomial structures of association schemes based on attenuated spaces are examined using recurrence and difference relations of the bivariate polynomials which form the eigenvalues of the scheme. These bispectral properties are obtained from contiguity relations of univariate dual $q$-Hahn and affine $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials. The bispectral algebra associated to the bivariate polynomials is investigated, as well as the subconstituent algebra of the schemes. The properties of the schemes are compared to those of the non-binary Johnson schemes through a limit.
m-distance-regular graphs and their relation to multivariate P-polynomial association schemes
An association scheme is $P$-polynomial if and only if it consists of the distance matrices of a distance-regular graph. Recently, bivariate $P$-polynomial association schemes of type $(α,β)$ were introduced by Bernard et al., and multivariate $P$-polynomial association schemes were later defined by Bannai et al. In this paper, the notion of $m$-distance-regular graph is defined and shown to give a graph interpretation of the multivariate $P$-polynomial association schemes. Various examples are provided. Refined structures and additional constraints for multivariate $P$-polynomial association schemes and $m$-distance-regular graphs are also considered. In particular, bivariate $P$-polynomial schemes of type $(α, β)$ are discussed, and their connection to 2-distance-regular graphs is established.
A bivariate $Q$-polynomial structure for the non-binary Johnson scheme
The notion of multivariate $P$- and $Q$-polynomial association scheme has been introduced recently, generalizing the well-known univariate case. Numerous examples of such association schemes have already been exhibited. In particular, it has been demonstrated that the non-binary Johnson scheme is a bivariate $P$-polynomial association scheme. We show here that it is also a bivariate $Q$-polynomial association scheme for some parameters. This provides, with the $P$-polynomial structure, the bispectral property (i.e. the recurrence and difference relations) of a family of bivariate orthogonal polynomials made out of univariate Krawtchouk and dual Hahn polynomials. The algebra based on the bispectral operators is also studied together with the subconstituent algebra of this association scheme.
Quantum State Transfer in Graphs with Tails
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider quantum state transfer on finite graphs which are attached to infinite paths. The finite graph represents an operational quantum system for performing useful quantum information tasks. In contrast, the infinite paths represent external infinite-dimensional systems which have limited (but nontrivial) interaction with the finite quantum system. We show that {\em perfect} state transfer can surprisingly still occur on the finite graph even in the presence of the infinite tails. Our techniques are based on a decoupling theorem for eventually-free Jacobi matrices, equitable partitions, and standard Lie theoretic arguments. Through these methods, we rehabilitate the notion of a dark subspace which had been so far viewed in an unflattering light.
The Terwilliger algebra of symplectic dual polar graphs, the subspace lattices and $U_q(sl_2)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The adjacency matrix of a symplectic dual polar graph restricted to the eigenspaces of an abelian automorphism subgroup is shown to act as the adjacency matrix of a weighted subspace lattice. The connection between the latter and $U_q(sl_2)$ is used to find the irreducible components of the standard module of the Terwilliger algebra of symplectic dual polar graphs. The multiplicities of the isomorphic submodules are given.

Entanglement of Free Fermions on Hadamard Graphs
Published in Nuclear Physics B Volume 960, November 2020, 115176 • View PublicationBIB
Free Fermions on vertices of distance-regular graphs are considered. Bipartition are defined by taking as one part all vertices at a given distance from a reference vertex. The ground state is constructed by filling all states below a certain energy. Borrowing concepts from time and band limiting problems, algebraic Heun operators and Terwilliger algebras, it is shown how to obtain, quite generally, a block tridiagonal matrix that commutes with the entanglement Hamiltonian. The case of the Hadamard graphs is studied in details within that framework and the existence of the commuting matrix is shown to allow for an analytic diagonalization of the restricted two-point correlation matrix and hence for an explicit determination of the entanglement entropy.
Fractional Revival and Association Schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fractional revival occurs between two vertices in a graph if a continuous-time quantum walk unitarily maps the characteristic vector of one vertex to a superposition of the characteristic vectors of the two vertices. This phenomenon is relevant in quantum information in particular for entanglement generation in spin networks. We study fractional revival in graphs whose adjacency matrices belong to the Bose-Mesner algebra of association schemes. A specific focus is a characterization of balanced fractional revival (which corresponds to maximal entanglement) in graphs that belong to the Hamming scheme. Our proofs exploit the intimate connections between algebraic combinatorics and orthogonal polynomials.

Perfect State Transfer on Weighted Graphs of the Johnson Scheme

We characterize perfect state transfer on real-weighted graphs of the Johnson scheme $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$. Given $\mathcal{J}(n,k)=\{A_1, A_2, \cdots, A_k\}$ and $A(X) = w_0A_0 + \cdots + w_m A_m$, we show, using classical number theory results, that $X$ has perfect state transfer at time $τ$ if and only if $n=2k$, $m\ge 2^{\lfloor{\log_2(k)} \rfloor}$, and there are integers $c_1, c_2, \cdots, c_m$ such that (i) $c_j$ is odd if and only if $j$ is a power of $2$, and (ii) for $r=1,2,\cdots,m$, \[w_r = \fracπτ \sum_{j=r}^m \frac{c_j}{\binom{2j}{j}} \binom{k-r}{j-r}.\] We then characterize perfect state transfer on unweighted graphs of $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$. In particular, we obtain a simple construction that generates all graphs of $\mathcal{J}(n,k)$ with perfect state transfer at time $π/2$.
Quantum Fractional Revival on Graphs

Fractional revival is a quantum transport phenomenon important for entanglement generation in spin networks. This takes place whenever a continuous-time quantum walk maps the characteristic vector of a vertex to a superposition of the characteristic vectors of a subset of vertices containing the initial vertex. A main focus will be on the case when the subset has two vertices. We explore necessary and sufficient spectral conditions for graphs to exhibit fractional revival. This provides a characterization of fractional revival in paths and cycles. Our work builds upon the algebraic machinery developed for related quantum transport phenomena such as state transfer and mixing, and it reveals a fundamental connection between them.
