First order convergence of matroids
The model theory based notion of the first order convergence unifies the notions of the left-convergence for dense structures and the Benjamini-Schramm convergence for sparse structures. It is known that every first order convergent sequence of graphs with bounded tree-depth can be represented by an analytic limit object called a limit modeling. We establish the matroid counterpart of this result: every first order convergent sequence of matroids with bounded branch-depth representable over a fixed finite field has a limit modeling, i.e., there exists an infinite matroid with the elements forming a probability space that has asymptotically the same first order properties. We show that neither of the bounded branch-depth assumption nor the representability assumption can be removed.

Amalgam width of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new matroid width parameter based on the operation of matroid amalgamation, which we call amalgam-width. The parameter is linearly related to branch-width on finitely representable matroids (which is not possible for branch-width). In particular, any property expressible in the monadic second order logic can be decided in linear time for matroids with bounded amalgam-width. We also prove that the Tutte polynomial can be computed in polynomial time for matroids with bounded amalgam width.

A new lower bound based on Gromov's method of selecting heavily covered points
Published • View PublicationBIB
Boros and Furedi (for d=2) and Barany (for abritrary d) proved that there exists a positive real number c_d such that for every set P of n points in R^d in general position, there exists a point of R^d contained in at least c_d n!/(d+1)!(n-d-1)! d-simplices with vertices at the points of P. Gromov improved the lower bound on c_d by topological means. Using methods from extremal combinatorics, we improve one of the quantities appearing in Gromov's approach and thereby provide a new stronger lower bound on c_d for arbitrary d. In particular, we improve the lower bound on c_3 from 0.06332 to more than 0.07480; the best upper bound known on c_3 being 0.09375.
