Non-additive symmetric rank-metric codes
We study non-additive rank-metric codes contained in the space of symmetric matrices over a finite field. Our main focus is on symmetric $2$-codes. For odd $q$, we introduce a quotient construction for $\mathrm{Sym}_3(q)$ in which rank-one differences are described by isotropic vectors of a nondegenerate quadratic form on $\mathbb F_q^4$. This leads to a correspondence with partial ovoids of the elliptic quadric $Q^-(5,q)$. Using a construction of Cossidente and Pavese, we obtain a non-additive symmetric $2$-code in $\mathrm{Sym}_3(q)$ of cardinality $q^4+2q^3$, improving the previously known general lower bound. We also give an explicit matrix description of this family. Lastly, we present a block-based construction for symmetric $2$-codes that extends the three-dimensional improvement to all odd dimensions. In particular, for every odd $n\geq3$ and every prime power $q>2$, we obtain \begin{equation*}
A_q^{\rm sym}(n,2) \ge q^{(n^2-1)/2}+q^{(n^2-3)/2}+q^{(n^2-9)/2}, \end{equation*} which is strictly larger than the maximum cardinality of an additive symmetric $2$-code with the same parameters. This yields the first infinite family (as the matrix dimension $n$ varies) of non-additive symmetric $2$-codes whose size is larger than the largest achievable size of an additive code with the same parameters; before this, such a gap had only been established for $n=3$.
On the Etzion-Silberstein conjecture for block Ferrers diagrams
Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes are rank-metric codes with prescribed support, and their dimension is bounded from above by the Etzion--Silberstein bound. In this paper, we study this problem for block Ferrers diagrams, namely Ferrers diagrams whose dots are grouped into square blocks of a fixed size. Motivated by the diagonal construction for MDS-constructible Ferrers diagrams, we introduce the notion of MSRD-constructibility, where MDS codes on diagonals are replaced by maximum sum-rank distance (MSRD) codes on block diagonals. We show that MSRD-constructible pairs yield optimal Ferrers diagram rank-metric codes over sufficiently large finite fields. We then relate MSRD-constructibility of a block Ferrers diagram to MDS-constructibility of its contraction, proving an equivalence when the distance is compatible with the block size and giving lifting criteria in the general case. As a consequence, we obtain MSRD-constructibility for strictly block-monotone and initially block-convex diagrams. Finally, we prove a reduction to block triangular diagrams and use it to obtain new arbitrary-field cases of the Etzion--Silberstein conjecture for MSRD-constructible block Ferrers diagrams.
On the number of inequivalent linearized Reed-Solomon codes
Linearized Reed-Solomon (LRS) codes form an important family of maximum sum-rank distance (MSRD) codes that generalize both Reed--Solomon codes and Gabidulin codes. In this paper we study the equivalence problem for LRS codes and determine the number of inequivalent codes within this family. Using the correspondence between sum-rank metric codes and systems of $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces, we analyze the stabilizer of the Gabidulin system and derive a characterization of equivalence between LRS codes. In particular, we prove that two LRS codes are equivalent if and only if the sets of norms that define the codes coincide up to multiplication by an element of $\mathbb{F}_q^\ast$. This description allows us to reduce the classification problem to the action of $\mathbb{F}_q^\ast$ on subsets of $\mathbb{F}_q^\ast$. As a consequence, we derive formulas for the number of inequivalent linearized Reed-Solomon codes and illustrate the results with explicit examples.
