Expander graphs are globally synchronizing
Published in Advances in Mathematics, vol 488, 2026, p. 110773 • View PublicationBIB
The Kuramoto model is fundamental to the study of synchronization. It consists of a collection of oscillators with interactions given by a network, which we identify respectively with vertices and edges of a graph. In this paper, we show that a graph with sufficient expansion must be globally synchronizing, meaning that a homogeneous Kuramoto model of identical oscillators on such a graph will converge to the fully synchronized state with all the oscillators having the same phase, for every initial state up to a set of measure zero. In particular, we show that for any $\varepsilon > 0$ and $p \geq (1 + \varepsilon) (\log n) / n$, the homogeneous Kuramoto model on the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n, p)$ is globally synchronizing with probability tending to one as $n$ goes to infinity. This improves on a previous result of Kassabov, Strogatz, and Townsend and solves a conjecture of Ling, Xu, and Bandeira. We also show that the model is globally synchronizing on any $d$-regular Ramanujan graph, and on typical $d$-regular graphs, for large enough degree $d$.

Symmetric Groups and Expander Graphs

We construct explicit generating sets S_n and \tilde S_n of the for the alternating and the symmetric groups, which turn the Cayley graphs C(Alt(n), S_n) and C(Sym(n), \tilde S_n) into a family of bounded degree expanders for all n. This answers affirmatively an old question which has been asked many times in the literature. These expanders have many applications in the theory of random walks on groups, card shuffling and other areas.

Symmetric Groups and Expanders

We construct an explicit generating sets $F_n$ and $\tilde F_n$ of the alternating and the symmetric groups, which make the Cayley graphs $C(Alt(n), F_n)$ and $C(Sym(n), \tilde F_n)$ a family of bounded degree expanders for all sufficiently large $n$. These expanders have many applications in the theory of random walks on groups and other areas of mathematics.

Universal lattices and unbounded rank expanders
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the representations of non-commutative universal lattices and use them to compute lower bounds for the \TauC for the commutative universal lattices $G_{d,k}= \SL_d(\Z[x_1,...,x_k])$ with respect to several generating sets. As an application of the above result we show that the Cayley graphs of the finite groups $\SL_{3k}(\F_p)$ can be made expanders using suitable choice of the generators. This provides the first examples of expander families of groups of Lie type where the rank is not bounded and gives a natural (and explicit) counter examples to two conjectures of Alex Lubotzky and Benjamin Weiss.

Kazhdan Constants for $SL_n(Z)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we improve the known Kazhdan constant for $SL_n(Z)$ with respect to the generating set of the elementary matrices. We prove that the Kazhdan constant is bounded from below by $[42\sqrt{n}+860]^{-1}$, which gives the exact asymptotic behavior of the Kazhdan constant, as $n$ goes to infinity, since $\sqrt{2/n}$ is an upper bound. We can use this bound to improve the bounds for the spectral gap of the Cayley graph of $SL_n(F_p)$ and for the working time of the product replacement algorithm for abelian groups.
