Layered mixed matrices and reaction networks
The purpose of this work is twofold. In the first part, we consider layered mixed matrices introduced by Murota, relate them to existing notions in combinatorial commutative algebra, and investigate the irreducibility of their determinants. Furthermore, for a layered mixed matrix in combinatorial canonical form, we determine the sparsity structure of its inverse. That is, we characterize which entries of the inverse are nonzero.
In the second part, we establish for the first time a formal connection between these algebraic results and the theory of buffering structures for reaction networks developed by Mochizuki and Okada. We identify the lattice of buffering structures with the lattice of order ideals of the block poset of the combinatorial canonical form of the associated layered mixed matrix. This allows us to characterize the reducibility of the symbolic Jacobian determinant as a polynomial in the reaction-rate derivatives, as well as the nonzero sensitivity responses of species concentrations to reaction-rate perturbations.
Copositivity, discriminants and nonseparable signed supports
In this work we establish a connection between copositivity, that is, nonnegativity on the positive orthant, of sparse real Laurent polynomials and discriminants. Specifically, we consider Laurent polynomials in the positive orthant with fixed support and fixed coefficient signs. We provide a criterion to decide whether a given polynomial is copositive that is based in determining the intersection points of the signed discriminant and a path going through the coefficients of the polynomial. If the signed support satisfies a combinatorial condition termed nonseparability, we show additionally that this intersection consists of one point, and that tracking one path in homotopy continuation methods suffices to decide upon copositivity.
Building on these results, we show that any copositive polynomial with nonseparable signed support can be decomposed into a sum of nonnegative circuit polynomials, generalising thereby previously known supports having this property.
Copositive geometry of Feynman integrals
Copositive matrices and copositive polynomials are objects from optimization. We connect these to the geometry of Feynman integrals in physics. The integral is guaranteed to converge if its kinematic parameters lie in the copositive cone. Pólya's method makes this manifest. We study the copositive cone for the second Symanzik polynomial of any Feynman graph. Its algebraic boundary is described by Landau discriminants.
Binary geometries from pellytopes
Binary geometries have recently been introduced in particle physics in connection with stringy integrals. In this work, we study a class of simple polytopes, called \emph{pellytopes}, whose number of vertices are given by Pell's numbers. We provide a new family of binary geometries determined by pellytopes as conjectured by He--Li--Raman--Zhang. We relate this family to the moduli space of curves by comparing the pellytope to the ABHY associahedron.
