Given a graph $G$ and a list assignment $L(v)$ for each vertex of $v$ of $G$. A proper $L$-list-coloring of $G$ is a function that maps every vertex to a color in $L(v)$ such that no pair of adjacent vertices have the same color. We say that a graph is list $k$-colorable when every vertex $v$ has a list of colors of size at least $k$. A $2$-distance coloring is a coloring where vertices at distance at most 2 cannot share the same color. We prove the existence of a $2$-distance list ($Δ+2$)-coloring for planar graphs with girth at least $10$ and maximum degree $Δ\geq 4$.
$2$-distance $(Δ+2)$-coloring of sparse graphs
A $2$-distance $k$-coloring of a graph is a proper $k$-coloring of the vertices where vertices at distance at most 2 cannot share the same color. We prove the existence of a $2$-distance ($Δ+2$)-coloring for graphs with maximum average degree less than $\frac{8}{3}$ (resp. $\frac{14}{5}$) and maximum degree $Δ\geq 6$ (resp. $Δ\geq 10$). As a corollary, every planar graph with girth at least $8$ (resp. $7$) and maximum degree $Δ\geq 6$ (resp. $Δ\geq 10$) admits a $2$-distance $(Δ+2)$-coloring.

A $2$-distance $k$-coloring of a graph is a proper vertex $k$-coloring where vertices at distance at most 2 cannot share the same color. We prove the existence of a $2$-distance $4$-coloring for planar subcubic graphs with girth at least 21. We also show a construction of a planar subcubic graph of girth 11 that is not $2$-distance $4$-colorable.

A proper coloring of the vertices of a graph is called a \emph{star coloring} if the union of every two color classes induces a star forest. The star chromatic number $χ_s(G)$ is the smallest number of colors required to obtain a star coloring of $G$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the star chromatic number $χ_s(G)$ and the maximum average degree $\mbox{Mad}(G)$ of a graph $G$. We prove that: (1) If $G$ is a graph with $\mbox{Mad}(G) < \frac{26}{11}$, then $χ_s(G)\leq 4$. (2) If $G$ is a graph with $\mbox{Mad}(G) < \frac{18}{7}$ and girth at least 6, then $χ_s(G)\leq 5$. (3) If $G$ is a graph with $\mbox{Mad}(G) < \frac{8}{3}$ and girth at least 6, then $χ_s(G)\leq 6$. These results are obtained by proving that such graphs admit a particular decomposition into a forest and some independent sets.

A $2$-distance $k$-coloring of a graph is a proper $k$-coloring of the vertices where vertices at distance at most 2 cannot share the same color. We prove the existence of a $2$-distance ($Δ+1$)-coloring for graphs with maximum average degree less than $\frac{18}{7}$ and maximum degree $Δ\geq 7$. As a corollary, every planar graph with girth at least $9$ and $Δ\geq 7$ admits a $2$-distance $(Δ+1)$-coloring. The proof uses the potential method to reduce new configurations compared to classic approaches on $2$-distance coloring.

A 2-edge-colored graph or a signed graph is a simple graph with two types of edges. A homomorphism from a 2-edge-colored graph $G$ to a 2-edge-colored graph $H$ is a mapping $\varphi: V(G) \rightarrow V(H)$ that maps every edge in $G$ to an edge of the same type in $H$. Switching a vertex $v$ of a 2-edge-colored or signed graph corresponds to changing the type of each edge incident to $v$. There is a homomorphism from the signed graph $G$ to the signed graph $H$ if after switching some subset of the vertices of $G$ there is a 2-edge-colored homomorphism from $G$ to $H$.
The chromatic number of a 2-edge-colored (resp. signed) graph $G$ is the order of a smallest 2-edge-colored (resp. signed) graph $H$ such that there is a homomorphism from $G$ to $H$. The chromatic number of a class of graph is the maximum of the chromatic numbers of the graphs in the class.
We study the chromatic numbers of 2-edge-colored and signed graphs (connected and not necessarily connected) of a given bounded maximum degree. More precisely, we provide exact bounds for graphs of maximum degree 2. We then propose specific lower and upper bounds for graphs of maximum degree 3, 4, and 5. We finally propose general bounds for graphs of maximum degree $k$, for every $k$.

We prove that every triangle-free planar graph of order $n$ and size $m$ has an induced linear forest with at least $\frac{9n - 2m}{11}$ vertices, and thus at least $\frac{5n + 8}{11}$ vertices. Furthermore, we show that there are triangle-free planar graphs on $n$ vertices whose largest induced linear forest has order $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil + 1$.

An $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a partition of the vertices of the graph into two sets $I$ and $F$, such that $I$ is an independent set and $F$ induces a forest of maximum degree at most $d$. We show that for all $M<3$ and $d \ge \frac{2}{3-M} - 2$, if a graph has maximum average degree less than $M$, then it has an $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition. Additionally, we prove that for all $\frac{8}{3} \le M < 3$ and $d \ge \frac{1}{3-M}$, if a graph has maximum average degree less than $M$ then it has an $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition.

An $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a vertex-partition into two sets $F$ and $F_d$ such that the graph induced by $F$ is a forest and the one induced by $F_d$ is a forest with maximum degree at most $d$. We prove that every triangle-free planar graph admits an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_5)$-partition. Moreover we show that if for some integer $d$ there exists a triangle-free planar graph that does not admit an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition, then it is an NP-complete problem to decide whether a triangle-free planar graph admits such a partition.

We give here new upper bounds on the size of a smallest feedback vertex set in planar graphs with high girth. In particular, we prove that a planar graph with girth $g$ and size $m$ has a feedback vertex set of size at most $\frac{4m}{3g}$, improving the trivial bound of $\frac{2m}{g}$. We also prove that every $2$-connected graph with maximum degree $3$ and order $n$ has a feedback vertex set of size at most $\frac{n+2}{3}$.

We give here some new lower bounds on the order of a largest induced forest in planar graphs with girth $4$ and $5$. In particular we prove that a triangle-free planar graph of order $n$ admits an induced forest of order at least $\frac{6n+7}{11}$ , improving the lower bound of Salavatipour [M. R. Salavatipour, Large induced forests in triangle-free planar graphs, Graphs and Combinatorics, 22:113-126, 2006]. We also prove that a planar graph of order $n$ and girth at least $5$ admits an induced forest of order at least $\frac{44n+50}{69}$.
Entropy compression method applied to graph colorings
Based on the algorithmic proof of Lovász local lemma due to Moser and Tardos, the works of Grytczuk et al. on words, and Dujmović et al. on colorings, Esperet and Parreau developed a framework to prove upper bounds for several chromatic numbers (in particular acyclic chromatic index, star chromatic number and Thue chromatic number) using the so-called \emph{entropy compression method}.
Inspired by this work, we propose a more general framework and a better analysis. This leads to improved upper bounds on chromatic numbers and indices. In particular, every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has an acyclic chromatic number at most $\frac{3}{2}Δ^{\frac43} + O(Δ)$. Also every planar graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has a facial Thue choice number at most $Δ+ O(Δ^\frac 12)$ and facial Thue choice index at most $10$.

A graph G is (d_1,..,d_l)-colorable if the vertex set of G can be partitioned into subsets V_1,..,V_l such that the graph G[V_i] induced by the vertices of V_i has maximum degree at most d_i for all 1 <= i <= l. In this paper, we focus on complexity aspects of such colorings when l=2,3. More precisely, we prove that, for any fixed integers k,j,g with (k,j) distinct form (0,0) and g >= 3, either every planar graph with girth at least g is (k,j)-colorable or it is NP-complete to determine whether a planar graph with girth at least g is (k,j)-colorable. Also, for any fixed integer k, it is NP-complete to determine whether a planar graph that is either (0,0,0)-colorable or non-(k,k,1)-colorable is (0,0,0)-colorable. Additionally, we exhibit non-(3,1)-colorable planar graphs with girth 5 and non-(2,0)-colorable planar graphs with girth 7.

We introduce the notion of locally identifying coloring of a graph. A proper vertex-coloring c of a graph G is said to be locally identifying, if for any adjacent vertices u and v with distinct closed neighborhood, the sets of colors that appear in the closed neighborhood of u and v are distinct. Let $χ_{lid}(G)$ be the minimum number of colors used in a locally identifying vertex-coloring of G. In this paper, we give several bounds on $χ_{lid}$ for different families of graphs (planar graphs, some subclasses of perfect graphs, graphs with bounded maximum degree) and prove that deciding whether $χ_{lid}(G)=3$ for a subcubic bipartite graph $G$ with large girth is an NP-complete problem.

Identifying codes have been introduced in 1998 to model fault-detection in multiprocessor systems. In this paper, we introduce two variations of identifying codes: weak codes and light codes. They correspond to fault-detection by successive rounds. We give exact bounds for those two definitions for the family of cycles.
