The Fine-Grained Complexity of Graph Homomorphism Problems: Towards the Okrasa and Rzążewski Conjecture
In this paper we are interested in the fine-grained complexity of deciding whether there is a homomorphism from an input graph $G$ to a fixed graph $H$ (the $H$-Coloring problem). The starting point is that these problems can be viewed as constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), and that (partial) polymorphisms of binary relations are of paramount importance in the study of complexity classes of such CSPs. Thus, we first investigate the expressivity of binary symmetric relations $E_H$ and their corresponding (partial) polymorphisms pPol($E_H$). For irreflexive graphs we observe that there is no pair of graphs $H$ and $H'$ such that pPol($E_H$) $\subseteq$ pPol($E_{H'}$), unless $E_{H'}= \emptyset$ or $H =H'$. More generally we show the existence of an $n$-ary relation $R$ whose partial polymorphisms strictly subsume those of $H$ and such that CSP($R$) is NP-complete if and only if $H$ contains an odd cycle of length at most $n$. Motivated by this we also describe the sets of total polymorphisms of nontrivial cliques, odd cycles, as well as certain cores, and we give an algebraic characterization of projective cores. As a by-product, we settle the Okrasa and Rzążewski conjecture for all graphs of at most 7 vertices.

Every quasitrivial n-ary semigroup is reducible to a semigroup
We show that every quasitrivial n-ary semigroup is reducible to a binary semigroup, and we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such a reduction to be unique. These results are then refined in the case of symmetric n-ary semigroups. We also explicitly determine the sizes of these classes when the semigroups are defined on finite sets. As a byproduct of these enumerations, we obtain several new integer sequences.

Quasitrivial semigroups: characterizations and enumerations

We investigate the class of quasitrivial semigroups and provide various characterizations of the subclass of quasitrivial and commutative semigroups as well as the subclass of quasitrivial and order-preserving semigroups. We also determine explicitly the sizes of these classes when the semigroups are defined on finite sets. As a byproduct of these enumerations, we obtain several new integer sequences.

On closed sets of relational constraints and classes of functions closed under variable substitutions
Published in Algebra Universalis 54 (2005) 149-165 • Search Publication
Pippenger's Galois theory of finite functions and relational constraints is extended to the infinite case. The functions involved are functions of several variables on a set $A$ and taking values in a possibly different set $B$, where any or both of $A$ and $B$ may be finite or infinite.
Partial clones containing all Boolean monotone self-dual partial functions
The study of partial clones on $\mathbf{2}:=\{0,1\}$ was initiated by R. V. Freivald. In his fundamental paper published in 1966, Freivald showed, among other things, that the set of all monotone partial functions and the set of all self-dual partial functions are both maximal partial clones on $\mathbf{2}$. Several papers dealing with intersections of maximal partial clones on $\mathbf{2}$ have appeared after Freivald work. It is known that there are infinitely many partial clones that contain the set of all monotone self-dual partial functions on $\mathbf{2}$, and the problem of describing them all was posed by some authors. In this paper we show that the set of partial clones that contain all monotone self-dual partial functions is of continuum cardinality on $\mathbf{2}$.
Hereditarily rigid relations
An $h$-ary relation $\r$ on a finite set $A$ is said to be \emph{hereditarily rigid} if the unary partial functions on $A$ that preserve $\r$ are the subfunctions of the identity map or of constant maps. A family of relations ${\mathcal F}$ is said to be \emph{hereditarily strongly rigid} if the partial functions on $A$ that preserve every $\r \in {\mathcal F}$ are the subfunctions of projections or constant functions. In this paper we show that hereditarily rigid relations exist and we give a lower bound on their arities. We also prove that no finite hereditarily strongly rigid families of relations exist and we also construct an infinite hereditarily strongly rigid family of relations.
Set-reconstructibility of Post classes
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 187 (2015) 12-18 • View PublicationBIB
The clones of Boolean functions are classified in regard to set-reconstructibility via a strong dichotomy result: the clones containing only affine functions, conjunctions, disjunctions or constant functions are set-reconstructible, whereas the remaing clones are not weakly reconstructible.
A complete classification of equational classes of threshold functions included in clones
Published in RAIRO Oper. Res. 49 (2015) 39-66 • View PublicationBIB
The class of threshold functions is known to be characterizable by functional equations or, equivalently, by pairs of relations, which are called relational constraints. It was shown by Hellerstein that this class cannot be characterized by a finite number of such objects. In this paper, we investigate classes of threshold functions which arise as intersections of the class of all threshold functions with clones of Boolean functions, and provide a complete classification of such intersections in respect to whether they have finite characterizations. Moreover, we provide a characterizing set of relational constraints for each class of threshold functions arising in this way.
Hypomorphic Sperner systems and nonreconstructible functions
Published in Order 32 (2015) 255-292 • View PublicationBIB
A reconstruction problem is formulated for Sperner systems, and infinite families of nonreconstructible Sperner systems are presented. This has an application to a reconstruction problem for functions of several arguments and identification minors. Sperner systems being representations of certain monotone functions, infinite families of nonreconstructible functions are thus obtained. The clones of Boolean functions are completely classified in regard to reconstructibility.
Locally monotone Boolean and pseudo-Boolean functions
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 160 (12) (2012) 1651-1660 • View PublicationBIB
We propose local versions of monotonicity for Boolean and pseudo-Boolean functions: say that a pseudo-Boolean (Boolean) function is p-locally monotone if none of its partial derivatives changes in sign on tuples which differ in less than p positions. As it turns out, this parameterized notion provides a hierarchy of monotonicities for pseudo-Boolean (Boolean) functions. Local monotonicities are shown to be tightly related to lattice counterparts of classical partial derivatives via the notion of permutable derivatives. More precisely, p-locally monotone functions are shown to have p-permutable lattice derivatives and, in the case of symmetric functions, these two notions coincide. We provide further results relating these two notions, and present a classification of p-locally monotone functions, as well as of functions having p-permutable derivatives, in terms of certain forbidden "sections", i.e., functions which can be obtained by substituting constants for variables. This description is made explicit in the special case when p=2.

On the poset of computation rules for nonassociative calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The symmetric maximum, denoted by v, is an extension of the usual max operation so that 0 is the neutral element, and -x is the symmetric (or inverse) of x, i.e., x v(-x)=0. However, such an extension does not preserve the associativity of max. This fact asks for systematic ways of parenthesing (or bracketing) terms of a sequence (with more than two arguments) when using such an extended maximum. We refer to such systematic (predefined) ways of parenthesing as computation rules. As it turns out there are infinitely many computation rules each of which corresponding to a systematic way of bracketing arguments of sequences. Essentially, computation rules reduce to deleting terms of sequences based on the condition x v(-x)=0. This observation gives raise to a quasi-order on the set of such computation rules: say that rule 1 is below rule 2 if for all sequences of numbers, rule 1 deletes more terms in the sequence than rule 2. In this paper we present a study of this quasi-ordering of computation rules. In particular, we show that the induced poset of all equivalence classes of computation rules is uncountably infinite, has infinitely many maximal elements, has infinitely many atoms, and it embeds the powerset of natural numbers ordered by inclusion.

On the lattice of equational classes of Boolean functions and its closed intervals
Published in Journal of Multiple-Valued Logic and Soft Computing 18 (2008) 81--104 • Search Publication
Let A be a finite set with at least two elements. The composition of two classes I and J of operations on A, is defined as the set of all compositions of functions in I with functions in J. This binary operation gives a monoid structure to the set E_A of all equational classes of operations on A. The set E_A of equational classes of operations on A also constitutes a complete distributive lattice under intersection and union. Clones of operations, i.e. classes containing all projections and idempotent under class composition, also form a lattice which is strictly contained in E_A. In the Boolean case |A|=2, the lattice E_A contains uncountably many equational classes, but only countably many of them are clones. The aim of this paper is to provide a better understanding of this uncountable lattice of equational classes of Boolean functions, by analyzing its "closed" intervals" [C_1,C_2], for clones C_1 and C_2. For |A|=2, we give a complete classification of all such closed intervals in terms of their size, and provide a simple, necessary and sufficient condition characterizing the uncountable closed intervals of E_A.

On the arity gap of polynomial functions
The authors' previous results on the arity gap of functions of several variables are refined by considering polynomial functions over arbitrary fields. We explicitly describe the polynomial functions with arity gap at least 3, as well as the polynomial functions with arity gap equal to 2 for fields of characteristic 0 or 2. These descriptions are given in the form of decomposition schemes of polynomial functions. Similar descriptions are given for arbitrary finite fields. However, we show that these descriptions do not extend to infinite fields of odd characteristic.

The arity gap of order-preserving functions and extensions of pseudo-Boolean functions
Published in Discrete Appl. Math. 160 (2012) 383-390 • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to classify order-preserving functions according to their arity gap. Noteworthy examples of order-preserving functions are so-called aggregation functions. We first explicitly classify the Lovász extensions of pseudo-Boolean functions according to their arity gap. Then we consider the class of order-preserving functions between partially ordered sets, and establish a similar explicit classification for this function class.
Decompositions of functions based on arity gap
Published in Discrete Math. 312 (2012) 238-247 • View PublicationBIB
We study the arity gap of functions of several variables defined on an arbitrary set A and valued in another set B. The arity gap of such a function is the minimum decrease in the number of essential variables when variables are identified. We establish a complete classification of functions according to their arity gap, extending existing results for finite functions. This classification is refined when the codomain B has a group structure, by providing unique decompositions into sums of functions of a prescribed form. As an application of the unique decompositions, in the case of finite sets we count, for each n and p, the number of n-ary functions that depend on all of their variables and have arity gap p.

Invariant functionals on completely distributive lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we are interested in functionals defined on completely distributive lattices and which are invariant under mappings preserving {arbitrary} joins and meets. We prove that the class of nondecreasing invariant functionals coincides with the class of Sugeno integrals associated with $\{0,1\}$-valued capacities, the so-called term functionals, thus extending previous results both to the infinitary case as well as to the realm of completely distributive lattices. Furthermore, we show that, in the case of functionals over complete chains, the nondecreasing condition is redundant. Characterizations of the class of Sugeno integrals, as well as its superclass comprising all polynomial functionals, are provided by showing that the axiomatizations (given in terms of homogeneity) of their restriction to finitary functionals still hold over completely distributive lattices. We also present canonical normal form representations of polynomial functionals on completely distributive lattices, which appear as the natural extensions to their finitary counterparts, and as a by-product we obtain an axiomatization of complete distributivity in the case of bounded lattices.
Join-irreducible Boolean functions

This paper is a contribution to the study of a quasi-order on the set $Ω$ of Boolean functions, the \emph{simple minor} quasi-order. We look at the join-irreducible members of the resulting poset $\tildeΩ$. Using a two-way correspondence between Boolean functions and hypergraphs, join-irreducibility translates into a combinatorial property of hypergraphs. We observe that among Steiner systems, those which yield join-irreducible members of $\tildeΩ$ are the -2-monomorphic Steiner systems. We also describe the graphs which correspond to join-irreducible members of $\tildeΩ$.

Associative polynomial functions over bounded distributive lattices
Published in Order - A Journal on the Theory of Ordered Sets and its Applications 28 (1) (2011) 1-8 • View PublicationBIB
The associativity property, usually defined for binary functions, can be generalized to functions of a given fixed arity n>=1 as well as to functions of multiple arities. In this paper, we investigate these two generalizations in the case of polynomial functions over bounded distributive lattices and present explicit descriptions of the corresponding associative functions. We also show that, in this case, both generalizations of associativity are essentially the same.
